10 people shot following altercation at South Carolina boat gathering, police say

Ten people were shot and at least one other person was injured when a holiday weekend gathering at a charter boat in a South Carolina coastal community turned violent, according to police. Some of those injured in the shooting in Little River on Sunday were in critical condition as of Monday morning, Horry County police said, without specifying how many. Detectives were trying to determine who was responsible for the shooting, police said; no names were released and no arrests were immediately announced. The shooting stemmed from an altercation during a private Memorial Day weekend gathering on a charter boat in Little River, a community of about 11,000 people situated along the Intracoastal Waterway near the North Carolina state line, police said. Police didn't say whether the shooting happened on the boat. The vessel was docked at the time of the incident, Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov said. Details about what led to the altercation weren't immediately available. Eleven people were taken to hospitals, police said. Besides the 10 who were shot, one person 'reported an unknown non-gunfire-related injury,' police said. According to The Associated Press, a flyer online advertised a party Sunday night with a DJ on a three-hour cruise ending at 9 p.m. A woman who answered a phone number on the flyer early Monday said she was distraught seeing her friends get shot, but then said she didn't want to talk further and hung up, according to the AP. Someone who answered the phone at the company that owns the boat said he didn't want to talk to a reporter, according to the AP. Little River is roughly 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Little River shooting on party boat leaves more than 11 people injured. What we know

At least 11 people have been transported to the hospital after a shooting that took place in Little River late Sunday night. Horry County Police responded to a shooting about 10 p.m. on Watson Avenue, according to a Facebook post. HCPD said that 11 people were taken to the hospital by Horry County Fire Rescue and others were arriving to the hospital by personal vehicles. The shooting took place at the dock in that area, according to Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov. The marina and docks are currently closed. It appears the shooting happened on a boat. Police were investigating onboard the Hurricane II party boat by the docks. Crime scene tape is across the entrance to the parking lot. Police said it is believed to be an isolated incident. However, it is unclear what took place or what led to the shooting. Neighbors reported seeing police riding in boats around the Intracoastal Waterway in the area. Resident Charleen Rodgers said she didn't hear any gunshots but heard sirens. When she came out, she heard the sirens and police started directing traffic at the corner of Watson and Baldwin avenues. 'I've never seen nothing like this,' she said. Other neighbors said they also heard the shots and thought it was fireworks until the police started showing up. Neighbors estimated at least 50 officers were in the area at one point. No arrests have been made, Moskov said. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Myrtle Beach Bike Rally attendees are being ticketed. What they are charged with

As bikers ride in for the Myrtle Beach Bike Rally, some have received noise violations. And with the upcoming weekend, which is expected to be the busiest of the rally, motorcyclists should be aware of noise ordinance laws. This also goes for Memorial Day weekend, when the Atlantic Beach Bike Week begins. Myrtle Beach Police have arrested at least two people for noise violations since the beginning of the Myrtle Beach Rally, which goes through Sunday, according to the Myrtle Beach Police event map. One person was arrested at 4:20 p.m. on Saturday and the next at 9:21 p.m., public records show. Both were arrested in downtown Myrtle Beach near North Ocean Boulevard and 9th Avenue North. It's unclear if police apprehended bikers. The Sun News requested the police reports from the incidents. Georgetown County Sheriff's Office issued one ticket for a noise violation since the start of the rally, said department spokesperson Jason Lesley May 14 in an email to The Sun News. Horry County Police do not yet know how many noise ordinance tickets have been issued, said spokesperson Mikayla Moskov in an email May 15 to The Sun News. Myrtle Beach, Horry County and Georgetown County have similar noise ordinance laws. Murrells Inlet, where much of the rally takes place, is split between Horry and Georgetown counties. North Myrtle Beach, where part of Atlantic Bike Week takes place, also has a noise ordinance that prohibits the racing of engines. All municipalities ban the unnecessary honking of horns, loudspeakers and loud exhausts. Horry County and Myrtle Beach specifically ban 'burnouts.' Police consider factors like volume, time of day and if complaints have been made when deciding to write a ticket or arrest a person, Moskov said.

Kingfisher Inn repairs underway after 2024 closure

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Repairs are underway at the Kingfisher Inn in Garden City, which was evacuated and closed down in March 2024 because of structural concerns. The high-rise condominium, located on the north side of the Garden City Pier, said in a Facebook post on Wednesday that contractors are on-site every day, along with the inn's staff members, who are cleaning and doing preventative maintenance inside units and on the property. The Kingfisher Inn was initially shut down after an engineer raised concerns about its structural integrity during a routine inspection. The inn was deemed a theoretical 'fall zone area,' according to Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov. However, it was considered repairable. After the closure, News13 reported that the resort explained in an email to Kingfisher Inn owners that intrusive repairs would be necessary and that the building would most likely remain closed through the summer and possibly into the fall of 2024. The email also said the estimated project costs were expected to exceed the resort's existing reserve funds. The statement reiterated that everything was an estimate, and that an exact date for reopening and the cost of expenses would not be known until repair quotes were in hand. The high-rise hotel was built in 1960 with pre-cast tiling known to be weather-resistant, but only to a foundational depth of 40 feet. Saul Martinez, owner of a Myrtle Beach-based engineering firm, told News13 in 2024 that depth is about half of what it should be for coastal properties. The post from Kingfisher on Wednesday also mentioned that updates, as well as pictures of the continuing work, will be provided on its Facebook page. Covington Drive fire remains 55% contained into eighth day of response as Florida team takes command

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Florida-based incident management team has taken over operations at the Covington Drive fire, which remains 55% contained eight days after igniting in a Carolina Forest neighborhood, officials said. 'This will give SC Forestry Commission firefighters the opportunity to get some much-needed rest and then be available to fight fires back in their home units,' the agency said in a news release. Still holding at 2,059 acres, crews planned to spend Saturday reinforcing firebreaks, suppressing hot spots and patrolling containment lines. Horry County spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov said earlier in the day operations are 'moving in a positive direction,' with hot spots primarily inside peat within the Carolina Bays wetlands. South Carolina, Florida and 11 other states are a part of the Southeastern Forest Fire Compact, which allows for firefighting personnel and resources to be shared across state lines, the Forestry Commission said. Activation of the compact is a common practice employed by forestry agencies throughout the south and across the country to bolster firefighting efforts in areas that are experiencing unusually high or otherwise extraordinary fire activity. South Carolina Forestry Commission firefighters also go to other states, particularly out west, every year to assist on large wildfire incidents that would otherwise overwhelm local resources. All certified wildland firefighters and incident command system (ICS)-trained personnel, regardless of home state or agency, train to the same standards and under the same framework so that they can fall in seamlessly on any incident. Georgetown and Horry counties remain under a burn ban. * * * Adam Benson joined the News13 digital team in January 2024.
