Chicago weather: Memorial Day sunshine leads off a mild, gradually warming week
The Brief Mostly sunny and cool today, with highs in the upper 60s A warming trend begins Thursday, peaking over the weekend Isolated showers possible Tuesday and again midweek CHICAGO - Chicagoland is enjoying a beautiful Memorial Day with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 60s—though it's cooler by the lake once again. Today marks the ninth straight day of below-normal temperatures. What we know Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with highs again in the upper 60s. While the day should stay mostly dry, there is a chance for isolated afternoon showers. The better chance for rain arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the low 60s and a continued chance of scattered showers. That chance of rain could linger into Wednesday night and Thursday, though coverage and totals are still uncertain. Thursday brings the start of a warming trend, with highs reaching the upper 60s under partly sunny skies. Temperatures will remain slightly below normal, but the pattern is shifting. By Friday, more summer-like weather arrives. Expect mostly sunny skies and highs climbing into the upper 70s. The weekend will feel even better—Saturday will reach the low 70s with sunshine, and Sunday will warm into the upper 70s under partly sunny skies. What we don't know Forecast models differ on how widespread or impactful midweek showers may be, especially Tuesday night through Thursday. That system still bears watching. CHICAGO - Today will be the ninth-straight day with below-normal temperatures in Chicagoland. Fox 32 Meteorologist Mike Caplan has the forecast for your Memorial Day. What to Expect We will have a good deal of sunshine today with a few more clouds dotting the sky in the afternoon. Highs will be in the mid-60s except near the lake, where temperatures will be several degrees cooler once again. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with lows in the low 50s. What's next Tomorrow does not look like a rainy day, however, there could be a few light showers around. Highs will once again be in the 60s except near the lake. If there is an opportunity for more robust showers, it would arrive tomorrow night into Wednesday. Even that remains somewhat in question as to how much of our area would be impacted by rainfall. On Thursday, we begin a slight warming trend with highs that could actually tag 70 degrees. Bear in mind that is still about 5 degrees cooler than normal. On Friday, there is a much better chance for a warm-up. Highs should reach the mid to upper 70s. There is a chance of showers at night. Saturday will be partly sunny with highs in the low 70s. Chicago weather: Wet, windy and cool today
The Brief A soaking rain with thunderstorms is moving into the Chicago area today, likely causing slowdowns during the morning commute. The main concern is widespread rainfall, though there's a low-end risk of severe storms south of I-80 and gusty winds throughout the day. Cooler temperatures in the 50s will linger through Thursday, with drier and warmer conditions expected by the weekend. CHICAGO - Rain is coming down across the Chicago area as of this writing. A good soaker with embedded thunderstorms will overspread the area this morning. I expect slow-downs during the commute. What we know Throughout the day, showers and thunderstorms are expected, but there will be pauses in the coverage. There is a low-end risk of severe thunderstorms south of I-80 later today. It will also be quite windy at times. The main story, however, will be the rainfall which the area desperately needs. Temperatures will not budge much from where they are now staying in the mid 50s in most locations. It will be a little warmer in our southern counties, which contributes to the stronger thunderstorm potential. Tonight, showers will continue, although in a lighter fashion. What's next Tomorrow I cannot rule out some additional shower activity, although any rainfall will be lighter in intensity. Thursday will continue the cool trend with temperatures once again stuck in the 50s for most of Chicagoland. There is even a small chance of another shower. We finally dry out on Friday with highs in the 60s. Most of the weekend looks dry with highs in the 60s. A few showers are possible on Memorial Day.
