Seven-day reminder over major change at East Midlands Airport for 'effortless' travel
Managers at East Midlands Airport have reminded passengers of changes at the drop-off zone. Bosses at EMA announced at the end of March that they were getting rid of barriers to improve traffic flow and streamline the system. The new technology, which will be managed through an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, will come into operation on Thursday, May 1. People will enter without having to go through a barrier when dropping off passengers, in a move officials at the airport hope will reduce congestion and help motorists avoid unnecessary charges. So rather than stopping at a barrier and paying on exit, drivers will now be able to leave the area and then have unit midnight the following day to pay the charge by phone or online. Under the change, frequent users - such as taxi drivers - will be able to set up an automatic payment system when they enter the designated rapid drop-off zone. Mike Grimes, customer and planning director at East Midlands Airport, said: 'We're really pleased that these new arrangements for dropping off passengers at the airport are ready to go live next week. "It's going to make it quicker and easier to drop people off and, along with the recent redesign of our Rapid Drop Off area, improve the flow of traffic. "It's another step forward in making everything as effortless as possible for people choosing to fly from East Midlands Airport.'

Airport plans barrier-free drop-off system
East Midlands Airport (EMA) has announced plans to introduce a barrier-free system for dropping off passengers. The airport, near Castle Donington, in Leicestershire, said existing barriers would be replaced with an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system in May. Airport bosses said they hoped the change would allow drop-offs to be quicker and smoother and improve traffic flow. EMA's customer services and planning director Mike Grimes said: "We have listened to passenger feedback which has told us that the rapid drop-off area was not working as well as it should." He said the removal of the barriers would be accompanied by a switch to cashless payment. Under the new system, the rapid drop-off area charge - £5 for 15 minutes and £1 for each extra minute - will need to be paid by midnight the day after making the drop-off, either online or by phone. The airport said no payments will be able to be made when exiting the area after the switch. It said frequent users, including taxi drivers, will be able to set up an auto-pay account for future visits. The airport said it had also recently redesigned its drop-off area to provide extra parking spaces and wider pavements. It said further information about when the new system will be introduced and how to use it would be released in the coming weeks. Follow BBC Leicester on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram.
