Denver Broncos Believe They're Better Than Dynastic Kansas City Chiefs in AFC West Rivalry

Denver Broncos Believe They're Better Than Dynastic Kansas City Chiefs in AFC West Rivalry originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Denver Broncos are building something. Not even the most avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs can argue against that. Advertisement But are they this season so built up that they are going to match the Chiefs, win the AFC West and end the KC dynasty? That seems far-fetched. But ... We suppose it justifiably starts with the Broncos themselves believing it can be done. And a Denver insider says Broncos head coach Sean Payton has his team thinking just that. In a segment on Denver's 104.3 The Fan, longtime Broncos reporter Mike Klis said that the Broncos are confident about their chances to take down the nine-time defending division champions. "I know inside the locker room, Sean Payton has them believing they're better than the Chiefs now," Klis said. Advertisement Klis said Payton has instilled a mentality of "swag" in his club, which to its credit did engineer for itself a 2024 turnaround with a 10-7 record. Can that be improved upon? Some think Denver having ended the 2024 regular season by clinching a playoff berth with a 38-0 win over a Chiefs team that treated the outing like an exhibition game is a foundational building block. Again, that seems far-fetched; the Broncos know that KC was sitting most of the starters after having clinched the AFC's top seed for the playoffs. We will find out soon enough, and we will find out in a head-to-head manner, too. Advertisement Denver and Kansas City meet for the first time in 2025 in the Mile High City on Nov. 16, with the second meeting in Kansas City scheduled for Christmas night. "Whether we think this team is good, whether we think this team can win the AFC West, they believe it. Sean Payton's got them believing it," Klis said of the upstart Broncos. Report: TreVeyon Henderson visiting with Broncos on Wednesday

The Broncos have a CFP national champion in their building on Wednesday. Per Mike Klis of 9NEWS Denver, Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson is on a pre-draft visit with the club. Henderson, 22, was one of two Buckeyes who rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2024, as Ohio State won the CFP title. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry, rushing for 1,016 yards with 10 touchdowns. He also caught 27 passes for 284 yards with a TD. In four seasons with OSU, Henderson recorded 590 carries for 3,761 yards — averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He also caught 77 passes for 853 yards with six TDs. Henderson has had a busy week, as he spent Tuesday visiting the Steelers.

Jonathon Cooper's restructure wasn't out of the blue

News broke on Friday that the Denver Broncos restructured pass rusher Jonathon Cooper's contract, a move that saved the team $3.2 million in 2025 salary cap space. We noted on Friday that the restructure did not necessarily mean a move was on the way for Denver. That notion has been confirmed by KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. "Easy now," Klis tweeted Friday. "When Broncos signed OLB Jonathon Cooper to 4-yr, $54M extension in [November], there was a clause stating Broncos could convert $3.2M of $4M roster bonus due March 17 (Monday) into signing bonus. Broncos exercised that clause. Relax and enjoy March Madness." So it wasn't a decision made quickly to free up space -- it was essentially a procedural move that was greenlit in November and executed in March. The Broncos now have about $17.4 million in available salary cap space, according to but some of that will go toward the team's rookie class. A few more budget signings could be on the way, but Denver's splash deals are likely done.
