National park discourages motorcyclists from visiting this summer

National park discourages motorcyclists from visiting this summer As part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Death Valley National Park issued a warning to motorcyclists about visiting the park during the summer months, telling them to 'think twice before traveling during the hottest months of the year' because of the serious risks. 'Motorcycle riders are injured or killed due to the extreme conditions every year in Death Valley,' park superintendent Mike Reynolds said. 'Your safety is our priority, and we want you to return home safely so you can ride for the long haul. 'We encourage riders to visit between October and April, when temperatures are significantly cooler and safer for motorcycling.' Temperatures can reach up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, and once the heat index exceeds 99 degrees Fahrenheit, ambient air no longer offers any cooling relief, even while riding at speeds. Making the intense conditions worse for motorcyclists is the protective gear they wear, making heat-related illnesses more likely. For the motorcyclists who still want to risk a ride in the summer, the park offers these safety tips: *Review active park alerts to learn about weather or closures. *Map your route in advance; there is no cell phone signal in most of the park. *Ride during cooler times of the day, such as before 10 am. *Take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shaded areas. * Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. * Slow down on curves. * Ride in center of lane and single file to have more space to maneuver on roads with limited shoulders. The National Park Service also offers a Motorcycle Safety page, as well as a Beat the Heat Safety page. Photos courtesy of NPS/Kurt Moses.

S&P 500, Nasdaq rise on trade optimism after soft inflation data

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq advanced on Tuesday on softer-than-expected inflation numbers and market optimism spurred by the U.S.-China trade reprieve, renewing expectations that the Federal Reserve would lower borrowing costs soon. The Dow fell more than 150 points, bogged down by UnitedHealth's 15.8% slide after the insurance bellwether suspended its annual forecast and its CEO stepped down. U.S. consumer prices rebounded moderately in April, with headline inflation increasing 0.2% last month after dipping 0.1% in March. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast that the CPI would rise 0.3%. The CPI climbed 2.3% in the 12 months through April, after advancing 2.4% in the 12-month period until March. 'We don't really see much impact from tariffs yet. It's still too early for that, but what we do see is that inflation is holding up decently well,' said Mike Reynolds, vice president of investment strategy at Glenmede. 'It's a good sign that inflation isn't a problem heading into an event-driven shock like tariffs,' he said. Traders leaned into bets that the U.S. Federal Reserve would hold off on lowering interest rates until September, while still anticipating two 25-basis-point cuts by the end of the year. A number of Fed officials are slated to speak this week, including Chair Jerome Powell on Thursday. At 11:23 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 167.57 points, or 0.40%, to 42,242.53, the S&P 500 rose 45.25 points, or 0.77%, to 5,889.44, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 278.78 points, or 1.49%, to 18,987.31. Monday's relief rally came after Washington and Beijing agreed to dial back stringent reciprocal tariffs, signaling a joint effort to stave off a global economic downturn. The U.S. will pause the extra tariffs it imposed on Chinese imports to 30% from 145% for three months, while Chinese duties on U.S. imports will fall to 10% from 125% in the same period. After the tariff truce, multiple brokerages lowered their odds of a U.S. recession. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq have recovered losses since April 2 - or 'Liberation Day' - when U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs. A 90-day pause announced on April 9 for countries other than China, along with solid earnings reports and a limited U.S.-UK trade agreement last week, helped the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq regain lost ground. The S&P 500 has turned positive on a year-to-date basis for the first time since early March. Most megacap and growth stocks swung higher, with Nvidia leading the pack with a 5.6% jump. Crypto exchange operator Coinbase Global, which is slated to join the S&P 500 on May 19, was among the top movers, jumping 18.8%. With more than 90% of S&P 500 companies having reported earnings, numbers from retail giant Walmart will be on the radar later this week. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.97-to-1 ratio on the NYSE, and by a 1.39-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted 17 new 52-week highs and six new lows, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 58 new highs and 49 new lows.

Recent earthquakes threaten mysterious fish hundreds of miles away in heart of Death Valley

DEATH VALLEY, Nev. - After two significant earthquakes, the population of the critically endangered Devils Hole pupfish has dropped to alarmingly low levels, but biologists aren't giving up on the rare species. The tiny, iridescent fish are found only in Devils Hole, a deep, water-filled geologic formation in the heart of Death Valley National Park. During episodes of intense seismic activity, groundwater in the cavern can violently slosh back and forth – known as a seiche – disrupting the fragile ecosystem the fish depend on. According to the National Park Service, a recent survey conducted after two significant earthquakes along the U.S. West Coast revealed only 38 Devils Hole pupfish alive. The survey results showed a sharp decline from the 191 fish recorded during a previous count just one year earlier. Waves triggered by the December and February earthquakes hundreds of miles away still disrupted the algae that the fish rely on for food and dislodged eggs from their spawning shelf. 7.0 California Quake May Have Killed Endangered Fish 500 Miles Away In Death Valley "The present size, at near-record lows, deserves our serious attention," Michael Schwemm, a fish biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said in a statement. "The actions outlined in our strategic plan, including supplemental feeding and population augmentation, provide the best opportunity for recovery." Despite the steep population drop, biologists said the impacts were not entirely unexpected and, in response, began efforts to prevent the species from slipping further toward extinction. In a carefully coordinated effort, 19 pupfish raised at a nearby conservation facility were released into Devils Hole to help stabilize the declining population. According to the National Park Service, it marked the first time that captive-raised pupfish had been introduced into the unique ecosystem. The recent release and survey took place just days before a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck the region on Monday, shaking much of Southern California and neighboring states once again. It is unknown what the status of the 19 fish is or what impacts the San Diego-area earthquake had on the population, but it will be determined during a regularly scheduled survey later in the fall. Did The National Weather Service Capture A Photo Of Bigfoot During A Pennsylvania Storm Survey? Surveys have been conducted twice a year since 1972, with numbers exceeding 200 fish in the early 1990s. Populations dipped dramatically in the early 2000s, hitting just 35 fish in 2013, before rebounding in recent years, before the seismic activity. "I'm proud of the work this interagency team is doing to monitor and protect the Devils Hole pupfish," said Mike Reynolds, superintendent of Death Valley National Park. "The historic transfer of captive-raised fish from the backup population in Ash Meadows Fish Conservation Facility underscores the importance of the dedicated staff and their state-of the-art equipment." With viable eggs and new larval fish being spotted during the most recent survey, biologists remain hopeful that the Devils Hole pupfish will naturally recover. "The fish were in good body condition and active throughout Devils Hole," said Brandon Senger, a fisheries biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife. "We observed encouraging spawning behavior and signs of increasing algal growth."Original article source: Recent earthquakes threaten mysterious fish hundreds of miles away in heart of Death Valley

Timely Analysis Compares Liberal and Conservative Housing Plans Ahead of Canadian Federal Election 2025

Ecohome publishes an in-depth, nonpartisan breakdown of the major parties' housing policies to help Canadian voters make informed decisions. 'Housing affordability is top of mind for Canadians, and it's essential that voters understand how each party plans to address this issue'— Robert J. Pierson - CEO - Ecohome Network Inc VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, April 18, 2025 / / -- As Canada approaches a pivotal federal election, housing affordability and supply are front and center in national debates. To help voters make sense of the competing promises, a leading resource in sustainable and affordable housing, has published a clear, nonpartisan comparison of the Liberal and Conservative parties' housing platforms. The guide, available as a detailed breakdown of Liberal and Conservative housing plans, analyzes each party's proposed strategies on affordability, green building incentives, zoning reform, tax policies, and housing supply. It also considers the broader implications these policies may have on Canadians, developers, and future generations. 'Housing affordability is top of mind for Canadians, and it's essential that voters understand how each party plans to address this issue', said Robert J. Pierson, CEO of Ecohome Network Inc. 'Our goal is to provide a clear, unbiased comparison to support voter education and spark meaningful discussion.' One key theme explored in the article is collaboration in housing delivery - including partnerships with non-profits, co-operatives, private developers and Indigenous communities. As Canada seeks long-term solutions, experts increasingly advocate for community-led, inclusive development models - an area where the major parties' commitments diverge. 'True progress on housing requires collaboration - not just between federal and provincial governments, but with Indigenous leaders, community organizations, and local builders', Mike Reynolds, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Ecohome added. 'We believe the future of affordable housing must be inclusive and participatory.' Released during the early stages of campaigning, the analysis offers timely insight into the core differences shaping Canada's housing future - and the choices voters face at the ballot box. Beyond the political implications, the housing sector plays a critical role in Canada's economic stability, with construction and real estate representing more than 20% of GDP. Ongoing pressures from supply chain disruptions and U.S. lumber tariffs - amplified by trade tensions under former President Donald Trump - continue to inflate building costs and delay projects nationwide. As policymakers and builders search for scalable, cost-effective solutions, prefabricated construction is also gaining renewed attention. Innovations in this space are seen as a way to accelerate housing delivery, reduce waste, and insulate the sector from volatile material costs. Ecohome explores these benefits and market trends further in its comprehensive guide to prefab homes in Canada. Fayetteville police directed to limit misdemeanor arrests due to jail overcrowding

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Fayetteville police officers have been instructed to limit physical arrests for most misdemeanor offenses due to overcrowding at the Washington County Jail. Instead, officers are encouraged to issue citations unless the offense falls under specific exceptions. Under the directive issued on Feb. 24, 2025, by Chief of Police Mike Reynolds, the following misdemeanor offenses will still require jail detention: Alcohol-related charges – Individuals will be held for eight hours unless a responsible party picks them up. Violent charges – Individuals will be held for 12 hours unless they post bond. 10 or more failure-to-appear warrants – These individuals will not be released by citation. For all other misdemeanor offenses, officers were told they should avoid making physical arrests unless absolutely necessary. Budweiser Clydesdales returning to University of Arkansas 'Unless an urgent situation requires it, arrests outside these parameters create unnecessary work for both our officers and WCSO jail staff,' the memorandum read. 'This diverts valuable time and resources. Instead, whenever possible, issue citations to maintain visibility, availability and public safety.' Some offenses still require immediate booking, fingerprinting and photographing, regardless of the circumstances: Battery in the third degree (ACA 5-13-203) Domestic battering in the third degree (ACA 5-26-305) Violation of an order of protection (ACA 5-53-134(b)(1)) DWI (alcohol, drugs, underage, etc.) (ACA 5-65-103) Officers still must document all arrests, whether by citation or physical detention, in an incident report. 25-005-Directive-on-Misdemeanor-ArrestsDownload According to the memo, the Fayetteville District Court will ensure that individuals cited for Class A misdemeanors are fingerprinted and photographed only after a guilty plea, no contest plea or conviction.
