24-year-old driving 150 mph in Fresno killed in single-car crash, CHP says

A 24-year-old was killed in a crash Sunday morning after traveling at a high rate of speed in Fresno County. The solo-vehicle collision happened at 12:10 a.m. at Highway 180, near Temperance Avenue. Officers saw a Dodge Challenger traveling eastbound on Highway 180 near Clovis Avenue approaching 130 mph, CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said. Officers initiated a traffic stop; however, the driver failed to yield and accelerated, reaching speeds up to 150 mph while exiting at Temperance Avenue, Salas said. The driver failed to navigate the off-ramp curve and the Dodge left the roadway, became airborne and overturned multiple times. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the southbound lanes of Temperance. The man was pronounced dead. It is unknown at this time whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors; toxicology results are pending, Salas said. The collision remains under investigation.

Two 19-year-olds killed in high speed, three-vehicle crash in Fresno County, CHP says

Two were killed Saturday night in a three-vehicle crash in Fresno County. Multiple agencies responded to the crash just before 10 p.m. at Temperance and Belmont avenues. When officers arrived two vehicles were in the middle of a roadway. California Highway Patrol spokesperson Mike Salas said an 18-year-old was driving a Dodge Charger southbound on Temperance Avenue at a high rate of speed when it collided with the left rear of a Toyota Camry that was stopped at the intersection's stop sign. The Dodge continued to drive out of control, Salas said, before the vehicle struck a Chevrolet Tahoe that was going northbound on Temperance Avenue. The Dodge and Tahoe came to rest blocking the intersection. Officers with the Clovis Police Department arrived shortly and provided medical aid until EMS arrived. Two 19-year-olds in the Dodge were pronounced dead. A 20-year-old passenger had critical injuries and a fourth passenger had minor injuries. The driver, Luis Felix of Fresno, suffered major injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center. He is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, Salas said. The driver and a woman of the Chevrolet sustained moderate injuries, while three minor passengers, ages 9, 4, and 1, suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Toyota also sustained minor injuries, Salas said. An investigation is underway.

Three injured in alleged DUI crash involving two CHP officers on Highway 41 in Fresno

Three people were injured, including two California Highway Patrol officers during a traffic stop when an alleged DUI driver smashed into the patrol car early Sunday morning. CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said the collision took place at 1:30 a.m. on northbound Highway 41, just south of Ashlan Avenue. A CHP unit was conducting a traffic stop with a Chevrolet Equinox at the far right lane. The CHP unit had its rear overhead lights activated. Salas said a Honda Accord approached from behind in the No. 3 lane and failed to see the CHP unit and collided with the rear-end of the CHP unit. The crash caused the patrol vehicle to be propelled forward into the Chevrolet, causing a violent spin-out involving all three vehicles within the northbound lanes, Salas said. The Chevrolet veered onto the right shoulder, while the patrol car and Honda were sent across all lanes and collided with the center concrete divider wall. The driver of the Honda was not injured, but a 26-year-old woman in the vehicle suffered major injuries. The Chevrolet driver had minor injuries, while both CHP officers had moderate injuries, Salas said. All were taken to a local hospital and expected to make full recoveries. 'Unfortunately, incidents like this demonstrate the horrific outcomes that can occur when individuals make the reckless decision to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs,' CHP Commander Ian Holguin said. 'The CHP is committed to ensuring the safety of all motorists and will continue efforts to remove impaired drivers from the road.' The Honda driver, 28-year-old Jacob Perry of Merced was arrested at the scene for felony DUI and taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Fresno County Jail.
