UH volleyball faces rival BYU in Provo this weekend
The No. 4 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team faces its toughest challenge of the season with a two-match road series against No. 5 BYU on Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb. 1, at Smith Fieldhouse. Both matches are scheduled for 4 p.m. HT.
The Rainbow Warriors (5-0) were idle last week, while BYU (4-2) dropped back-to-back matches against No. 2 UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif. The Cougars lost the first contest in five sets before falling in straight sets in the rematch.
This series marks the first meeting between the two programs since their clash in the 2021 NCAA Championship, where Hawai'i swept BYU to secure its first official national title.
UH head coach Charlie Wade is on the verge of a milestone, entering the series with 298 career victories. With two more wins, he would become the fifth active Division I-II head coach to reach 300 career wins. Only 20 coaches in Division I-II history have surpassed the mark, including former UH coach Mike Wilton, who ranks 20th all-time with 316 victories. The all-time leader is UCLA's Al Scates, who recorded 1,239 career wins.
The matchup will feature a familiar face, as BYU outside hitter Keoni Thiim previously played three seasons with the Rainbow Warriors (2022-24), appearing in 87 matches with 14 starts. Thiim is the grandson of Wilton.
Hawai'i is led by sophomore setter Tread Rosenthal, who has been dominant this season with 243 assists through 22 sets, along with seven aces and 16 blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Adrien Roure has also made an immediate impact, leading the team with 75 kills.
Both matches will be televised live on BYUtv, available on Spectrum channel 409.
