A celebration of nonviolence: Gandhi Institute previews Soulforce fundraiser
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Local organizers reach out to the Rochester community seeking support to promote peace and growth through a fundraiser coming up in June. The executive director at the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence visited the News 8 at Sunrise set to preview the annual Soulforce gala on June 14 at the Memorial Art Gallery. On top of music, dancing, food and even magic, participants will be invited to learn more about the non-profit's work tackling big issues in our community through four main pillars: restorative practices, nonviolence education, racial justice and sustainability. 'At the institute, we recognize that if humanity continues down a path that centers violence, that centers exploitation, that extracts the earth's resources, it's not sustainable. So the institute exists to help shift our culture towards one that centers humanity, peace, and sustainability,' explains Director Erin Thompson. News 8 is a proud media sponsor of this event where our very own Mikhaela Singleton will act as emcee. Black Maternal Health Walk-a-thon returns to Rochester
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — News 8 invited members of the Healthy Baby Network to the News 8 at Sunrise studio to preview the 2nd annual Black Maternal Health Walk-a-thon. Organizers share with News 8's Mikhaela Singleton the importance of raising awareness for Black maternal health and the ongoing racial disparities in healthcare. According to the Healthy Baby Network, the maternal mortality rate in the Finger Lakes region is 60 percent higher than the New York State average and Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than their Caucasian counterparts. The upcoming walk-a-thon will serve as an opportunity to bring Rochester area residents closer to equitable and accessible healthcare. Vendors offering information and services will include Monroe County Health Services, Eastman Dental, Common Ground Health, Foodlink, and many more. The event will be April 12 at Marketplace Mall at 9:30 am. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
