Explosions rock occupied Crimea as drone attack reportedly sets Russian ammo depot on fire
A fire broke out at an ammunition depot in the village of Perevalne in Russian-occupied Crimea following a series of explosions during a drone attack on the morning of May 16, the Crimean Wind Telegram channel reported, citing local residents. The 126th Separate Coastal Defense Brigade of the Russian Black Sea Fleet is said to be stationed near Perevalne. In response to the incident, authorities reportedly blocked the road connecting Simferopol and Alushta. Crimean Wind shared footage taken by locals showing smoke rising from different locations across Crimea. Explosions were also reported near the Belbek and Kacha military airfields in Sevastopol, as well as near Cape Fiolent, Balaklava, and Bakhchisarai. "The loud sounds that were heard in the city are the work of our soldiers," claimed the Russian-installed proxy head of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev. According to Razvozhayev, six drones were downed over the occupied peninsula. He did not report any damage or casualties due to the attack. Ukraine has not officially commented on the reported strikes, and the Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the claims. Throughout Russia's all-out war, Ukraine has carried out several successful attacks against Russian targets in occupied Crimea and its vicinity, heavily degrading the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Russia сancels Victory Day parade in occupied Crimean city of Sevastopol, state media reports
Russia has canceled this year's Victory Day parade in the occupied Crimean port city of Sevastopol, Russian state-controlled media reported on May 5. Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said the Victory Day parade, to be held on May 9 to commemorate the Soviet victory in World War II, would not take place due to safety risks. On May 9, Russia holds grandiose military parades in celebration of the end of World War II in Europe. and most European nations mark May 8 as Victory in Europe Day. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 3 said Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of foreign officials planning to attend Russia's parade in Moscow on May 9, warning Russia could orchestrate provocations, including "arsons, explosions, or other actions," and attempt to blame Ukraine. Russia is responsible for ensuring safety and security on its territory, Zelensky added. The cancellation follows a reported Ukrainian sea drone strike that destroyed a Russian Su-30 fighter jet near the port of Novorossiysk on May 2, an unprecedented operation described by Ukraine's military intelligence as the first time a sea drone has downed a jet aircraft. The $50 million jet reportedly crashed into the sea. Sevastopol, a major naval base on the Black Sea, has been under Russian occupation since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. More than 100 Ukrainian drones repelled over Crimea
The Russian military repelled a series of Ukrainian drone raids overnight on Thursday, downing a total of 121 UAVs, the Defense Ministry has said. In a statement on Friday, officials reported no damage to the port city of Sevastopol, home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet, following the attack. The majority of the aircraft-type drones – 89 in total – were intercepted over Crimea, and another 23 over the Black Sea, according to the statement. In mainland Russia, four drones were downed over Krasnodar Region, two over Oryol Region, one over Bryansk Region, and one over Belgorod Region. Another drone was intercepted over the Sea of Azov. Mikhail Razvozhayev, the governor of Sevastopol, reported a 'massive combined attack' on the city, which he said was defeated by the fleet and local air defense forces. He added that no damage was done in the city, and that all emergency services remain on high alert. Ukraine routinely launches drone raids into Russia, with strikes often targeting critical infrastructure and civilians. On Thursday, the Ukrainian military launched a drone strike on the town of Aleshki in Russia's Kherson Region, killing at least seven and injuring more than 20.
