This German manufacturer has chosen the Augusta area to start North American operations

A German manufacturer of pet-food additives has chosen the Augusta area to establish operations in North America. Mikro-Technik GmbH & Co. KG hopes to bring more than two-dozen employees to McCormick County, S.C., with an investment of $3.2 million. Mikro-Technik will lease and upfit a shell building maintained by the McCormick County Economic Development Authority at 8463 S.C. Hwy. 28/221 in Plum Branch. The completed project is expected to expand the company's production capacity for customers in the U.S. and Canada, officials announced Tuesday. Mikro-Technik refines plant-based cellulose fiber into a powder used as a binding agent in types of pet food, mainly dry kibble. Operations are scheduled to go online in the third quarter of 2025. "Establishing our first North American facility in McCormick County marks an exciting milestone for Mikro-Technik," CEO Kai Weingarten said in prepared remarks. "This investment allows us to better serve our customers across the American continent, while also contributing to the local economy. We are grateful for the support we've received at the state and local levels and look forward to growing our operations in South Carolina." The state's Coordinating Council for Economic Development awarded a $350,000 Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to McCormick County to help fund building improvements. "The people of McCormick County are hardworking and prepared for this opportunity, and I am confident Mikro-Technik will find a community that is fully committed to its success,' he said. Mikro-Technik selects McCormick County to establish first North American operation

McCORMICK COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) – Mikro-Technik, a natural fiber manufacturer headquartered in Germany, announced Tuesday it has selected McCormick County, S.C. to establish its first operation in North America. According to a statement from the Office of the Governor Henry McMaster on May 27, Mikro-Technik is leasing and upfitting the facility located at 8463 Highway 28/221 in Plum Branch. Mikro-Technik processes cellulose fiber into additives for the food and pet food industries. 'Establishing our first North American facility in McCormick County marks an exciting milestone for Mikro-Technik,' said CEO K. Weingarten. 'This investment allows us to better serve our customers across the American continent, while also contributing to the local economy.' The $3.2 million-dollar investment is expected to bring 27 new jobs to the area. 'On behalf of the county council and the citizens of McCormick County, we welcome Mikro-Technik to our community,' said McCormick County Council Chairman Bernie Hamby. He added, 'It is exciting to see this company lease and upfit the McCormick County speculative building to create jobs and provide an economic boost for McCormick County.'
