New food-additive factory to open in Augusta area
A German manufacturer of pet-food additives has chosen the Augusta area to establish operations in North America.
Mikro-Technik GmbH & Co. KG hopes to bring more than two-dozen employees to McCormick County, S.C., with an investment of $3.2 million.
Mikro-Technik will lease and upfit a shell building maintained by the McCormick County Economic Development Authority at 8463 S.C. Hwy. 28/221 in Plum Branch. The completed project is expected to expand the company's production capacity for customers in the U.S. and Canada, officials announced Tuesday.
Mikro-Technik refines plant-based cellulose fiber into a powder used as a binding agent in types of pet food, mainly dry kibble. Operations are scheduled to go online in the third quarter of 2025.
"Establishing our first North American facility in McCormick County marks an exciting milestone for Mikro-Technik," CEO Kai Weingarten said in prepared remarks. "This investment allows us to better serve our customers across the American continent, while also contributing to the local economy. We are grateful for the support we've received at the state and local levels and look forward to growing our operations in South Carolina."
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster called the project a "major boost" to the county's population of about 10,000 residents.
The state's Coordinating Council for Economic Development awarded a $350,000 Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to McCormick County to help fund building improvements.
"The people of McCormick County are hardworking and prepared for this opportunity, and I am confident Mikro-Technik will find a community that is fully committed to its success,' he said.
