Brignone still unsure if she will be fit for Winter Games

Brignone, who turns 35 in July, won the alpine ski World Cup overall title and World Championship giant slalom gold last season but suffered a career-threatening double leg fracture in her last race in April. "I'd like to be able to say that I'll definitely be at the start of the next Winter Olympics, but today I don't know," Brignone told a press briefing in Turin. The Games are being hosted by Milan Cortina next February. "I'm going to try, I'm doing everything I can, but the most important thing for me is to get better and then come back to ski racing," she said. "The Olympics are a great source of motivation, it's true that there's still time between now and the Olympics, but time is running out." The Italian dominated the 2024-25 season on the women's circuit, winning 10 races, her second overall World Cup title and both the giant slalom and downhill crystal globes. Brignone suffered a double tibia-fibula fracture in her left leg on April 3 during the Italian Championships. She said she does not know when she'll be able to resume training on snow. "As long as I can't put my foot down, it's hard to say, I'll only put skis back on when I'm well, not to be on one leg," she said. During an operation on her broken leg, surgeons noticed a ligament tear in her left knee. "We're not worried about the cruciate ligament," Italian Winter Sports Federation doctor Andrea Panzeri, who is overseeing Brignone's rehabilitation, said on Tuesday.

IIHF, PWHL not aligned over 2026 women's hockey worlds scheduling

The International Ice Hockey Federation has postponed announcing the host city of the 2026 women's world hockey championship. The IIHF introduced running a women's championship in the same year as an Olympic Games in 2022, but the arrival of the Professional Women's Hockey League has made scheduling the 2026 world championship thorny. The IIHF said in an email Monday the allocation of the 2026 women's championship was postponed until its semi-annual congress Oct. 3-4. The 2022 championship was held Aug. 25 to Sept. 4. In Herning and Frederikshavn, Denmark, after February's Olympic Games in Beijing. International Ice Hockey Federation women's committee chair Zsuzsanna Kolbenheyer said in April that March-early April for the women's championship is in the IIHF bylaws, and that Denmark's summer tournament was a one-off. "That was only for that year," Kolbenheyer said then. "We always wanted to put it back to the original dates." But the PWHL, entering its third season, does not want two long international breaks within weeks of each other. The Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy, run Feb. 6-22. "We've had ongoing discussions with the IIHF," PWHL executive vice-president of hockey operations Jayna Hefford said Friday during a conference call about league expansion. "We do not have a date for that event, location for that event. "We do know the Olympics are happening in February, but anything beyond that is not confirmed. So that's the information we have today, and we'll continue to work closely with the IIHF and various national federations." WATCH l U.S. dethrones Canada at 2025 women's hockey worlds: United States take down Canada in overtime to win women's hockey worlds gold 1 month ago Duration 2:13 Tessa Janecke was the benefactor of a bad turnover by the Canadians, as she buried a pass from Taylor Heise to clinch a 4-3 overtime victory against Canada. This gave the United States the win over their rivals for a third-consecutive women's world championships tournament. PWHL expanding by 2 teams Canada will host the 2027 women's championship. The PWHL's second season ran from Dec. 1, 2024 to May 26 when the Minnesota Frost defended the Walter Cup. Each team played 30 regular-season games. The league will expand by two clubs next season in Vancouver and Seattle. Kolbenheyer said during April's women's championship April 9-20 in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic that a survey was issued to the women's hockey community seeking opinions on world championship dates "but we decided at the council level that it would be too late to do any changes" to 2026. The international hockey calendar is crowded. It also includes the men's championship in May, the world under-20 men's championship in December-January, the women's under-18 championship in January and the men's under-18 championship in April. The IIHF also holds multiple lower-level divisional tournaments in those categories that promote and relegate countries. The NCAA's women's Frozen Four in mid-March also dictates the women's championship's timing.

Cozzolino's two goals leads Canada to 4-2 win over China at para hockey worlds

Dominic Cozzolino scored twice as Canada wrapped up the preliminary round at the world para hockey championship with a 4-2 win over China on Tuesday. Cozzolino leads the tournament with seven goals. Adam Dixon scored the game-winner while Mathieu Lelieve had the other goal for Canada. Corbin Watson stopped 13 shots as Canada outshot China 25-15. Canada finished first in Group A at 3-0 and will face Czechia in Friday's semifinals. The United States will face China in the other semifinal. All four semifinalists also qualified for next year's Paralympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy. 'It's nice to finish off the round robin with a win,' Canada assistant coach Greg Westlake said. 'It's fun to be in a close, competitive hockey game. It's good for our sport.' Westlake said the Canadians showed persistence when the shots weren't going in early in the game. 'You could really see today how tight of a team we have,' he said. 'You're trying and trying, getting lots of shots but nothing is going in you just have to stay with it.' After winning its first two games over Germany and South Korea by a combined score of 23-0, Canada got a much tougher test Tuesday. Canada and China were tied 1-1 after two periods, with Dixon's winner coming with less than 10 minutes left. 'There was no panic at all in that room,' Cozzolino said of dealing with a close game. 'We know what makes us a great team and we stuck with it. I was proud of the guys. 'We didn't waver at all, didn't get frustrated and I think the end result shows that. Every line just kept pounding the rock as we say, and it led to success.' Canada is the defending champion after winning its fifth world title last year in Calgary.

U.S. men's hockey team wins first standalone world championship since 1933

The U.S. men's hockey team won its first standalone world championship since 1933, beating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime in Sunday's final in Stockholm. Tage Thompson scored the golden goal to give the U.S. its first major tournament title since the 1996 World Cup. Its last Olympic title came in 1980 with the Miracle on Ice. Advertisement Goalie Jeremy Swayman got the shutout. For a time, the Olympics also counted as world championships, so the U.S.' Olympic medals in 1952 (silver), 1956 (silver) and 1960 (gold) are also world championship medals. The U.S. was eliminated from worlds in the quarterfinals last year. The Americans were fourth at worlds in 2022 and 2023 and made the semifinals 13 times since the IIHF reinstituted a bracketed playoff round in 1992. They lost 12 semifinals in a row before beating Sweden in Stockholm on Saturday. The U.S. team at these worlds featured two players from last February's 4 Nations Face-Off: Swayman and defenseman Zach Werenski, who led all players at 4 Nations with six points. Advertisement Many top NHL players miss worlds because the tournament takes place during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Others choose to rest after the NHL season. The U.S. head coach at worlds is the San Jose Sharks' Ryan Warsofsky. The U.S. has already qualified for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, where NHL players are expected to participate for the first time since the 2014 Sochi Games. The U.S. head coach for the Olympics is the New York Rangers' Mike Sullivan.

Lindsey Vonn discusses the emotional podium following her retirement comeback It's been just over a month since Lindsey Vonn made history. A second-place finish in a super-G race in Idaho saw her become the oldest female Alpine skier – by six years – to make the podium of a World Cup race. It was a deeply emotional moment as she ended her comeback season following her dramatic decision to come out of retirement. Vonn had originally called time on her career in 2019 but a partial knee replacement gave the 40-year-old a new lease of life on the slopes with eyes now firmly focused on next year's Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. Vonn, appearing alongside fellow Olympians Eileen Gu and Maria Höfl-Riesch at a CNN panel at the Laureus World Sports Awards, has been telling CNN's Amanda Davies that the journey to get back to the top was one of the most challenging of her career. 4:32 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing
