Rivalry Series Reduced To Four Games In November And December

Two years ago the Rivalry Series between Canada and the United States was still a seven game series and one of the lone options to see best-on-best hockey in North America. After reducing the series to five games in 2024-25, the Rivalry Series will be even shorter this season being reduced to four games. Advertisement USA Hockey was first to release their dates for the series, which will be played in its entirety in November in the USA, and December in Canada. Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, will host the opening game of the 2025 Rivalry Series on November 6, while KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York will host game two on November 8. The PWHL has yet to unveil their 2025-26 schedule , but last year the league opened in the days following the first stop of the Rivalry Series. The league will be forced to take a month long pause in 2026 for the Milano Cortina Olympics. Canada won the 2024-25 Rivalry Series in a deciding game five win over USA in Summerside, PEI. USA however, exacted their revenge when it mattered most winning gold at the 2025 World Championships in Czechia.

This time, players who either missed out on the 2025 NHL Playoffs altogether or were eliminated early are eligible to participate, which means Crosby is back in the fold, having captained Canada to 4 Nations Face-Off glory in February, a decade after he last got the chance to represent his country. More NHL players are likely to declare in the hours leading up to the puck drop, but the United States roster features Brady Skjei, Joey Daccord and Matty Beniers, Sweden have Mika Zibanejad, Marcus Pettersson and Adam Larsson, and Switzerland have Devils trio Nico Hischier, Timo Meier and Jonas Siegenthaler. Islanders duo hopes World Championships can be springboard for 2026 Olympics

The season is not over yet for at least two Islanders. Bo Horvat and Noah Dobson were named to Team Canada's roster for the World Championships on Thursday, and it is a strong possibility that Simon Holmstrom will participate in the competition for Team Sweden as well. Advertisement For the two who have been officially named, this was a logical step to take in advancing their chances of participating in February's Milano Cortina Olympics after they were left off Team Canada's squad at the 4 Nations Face-Off. It should not come as a surprise that many of the initial 15 players named to Team Canada on Thursday — Macklin Celebrini, Adam Fantilli, Travis Konecny, Brandon Montour, Travis Sanheim and MacKenzie Weegar, in addition to the pair of Islanders — are somewhere on the bubble for the 25-man Olympic team. 'I don't know exactly what it's like, but the mindset going into it, for me, I only played 70 games this year, my body feels pretty good. And also with the Olympics coming up, it's an opportunity to represent your country and put yourself in a position to get on the radar going into next season,' Dobson said at breakup day, when the defenseman expressed a strong interest in donning the maple leaf. 'Go into the summer feeling good, hopefully try and win a gold medal.' Advertisement Bo Horvat was named to the Team Canada roster for the World Championships. NHLI via Getty Images For the 25-year-old Dobson, this is also a chance to get his game back on track after an up-and-down season that represented a step back from a breakout campaign of two years ago. Dobson had just 39 points, his worst in any non-COVID-affected season, and struggled all year on the power play while making a number of high-profile errors in his own zone. He is expected to receive a major bump in pay this offseason and potentially a long-term deal as a restricted free agent, but it's possible his performance this season will cause some hesitancy for the Islanders to hand out the sort of contract for which Dobson will ask. Horvat also sounded notes of interest about World Championships at breakup day, and looks a possibility to get top-line minutes for Team Canada. Advertisement Noah Dobson was named to the Team Canada roster for the World Championships. Michelle Farsi for New York Post 'It's definitely something to consider,' he said at breakup day. 'It's a pretty big year Olympics-wise, next year. I think it'd be a good stepping stone for me to go prove myself, represent my country. If I do get that opportunity, I'd take it.' Horvat has played at Worlds once before, coming in fourth with Team Canada in 2017-18. The Canadians also finished fourth last year in a tournament won by host nation Czechia. Advertisement While Sweden, one of this year's hosts along with Denmark, has yet to announce its roster, Holmstrom would be a logical addition after scoring 20 goals with 25 assists for the Islanders this season. Like Horvat and Dobson, Holmstrom is also a player with a shot of making the Olympic team, and so has something to prove by representing his country this spring. 'I haven't really thought about it that much,' Holmstrom said at Islanders breakup day. 'I have a contract that I gotta sign and been focused on this season.'

Following Worlds, All Eyes Shift To 2026 Olympics

With the 2025 IIHF women's World Championships in the books, the next major tournament headed toward the best women's hockey players in the world is the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. USA won gold, Canada silver, and Finland took bronze in Czechia. They'll hold those honors into the 2026 World Championships. First however, they'll all meet again at the Olympic Games. Following their gold medal game loss to Team USA, Canada immediately turned their eyes to the future. "We had a couple of chances, we came up short, it's part of it and it's a process," said captain Marie-Philip Poulin. "It's going to suck for a little bit, but we have to go back to work because we have a big tournament [Olympics] coming up in 2026." Canada will enter the Milano Cortina Olympics as reigning champions after they won gold at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. "I think any world championship you want to win, but leading up to the Olympics, it's even more amplified,' said defender Renata Fast. "It also gives us more motivation and more ways to reflect individually and collectively and figure out what we need to work on so that in 10 months or so we can be on the other side." The 2026 Olympic Games will feature USA, Canada, Finland, Czechia, Switzerland, Finland, Germany, Japan, Italy and at the moment Russia. If Russia is deemed ineligible, France will take their place.

Malinin, Liu help U.S. take early lead at skating's World Team Trophy

U.S. world figure skating champions Ilia Malinin and Alysa Liu dazzled again to help their country take a commanding lead on the opening day of the season-ending World Team Trophy on Thursday. Malinin, who won his second world title last month in Boston, topped the men's short program in Tokyo with a score of 106.08, almost 10 points clear of second-placed Adam Siao Him Fa of France. Liu led the women's short program, and ice dance world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates also won their event to give the United States an eight-point lead over second-place Japan. Malinin, known as the "Quad God" for his arsenal of quadruple jumps, said he was "a little bit tired" in his first competition since the world championships. But the 20-year-old also said he was "pretty happy" with his routine after showcasing his skills to an adoring Japanese crowd. "I felt like my performance was a lot better than at worlds," said Malinin, who is the hot favorite to win gold at next year's Milano Cortina Olympics. "I was able to not have that world championship on my mind and just skate for fun. I was able to get into myself." Siao Him Fa scored 96.16 points to place ahead of American Jason Brown, who had 93.82. Liu went into the women's competition riding a wave of momentum following her maiden world title. The 19-year-old returned to competition last year after two years away from skating and described her victory in Boston as "very unexpected." She kept her form going in Tokyo, winning the short program with a score of 75.70, ahead of Japan's Kaori Sakamoto, who scored 75.54 points, and Georgia's Anastasiia Gubanova with a score of 69.80. Liu said she "really felt the competition comedown" after the world championships but fought through the fatigue. "I was so tired, I slept a lot, and I felt that if I was hard at training, I would be too tired here," said Liu, who was just 16 when she stepped away from the sport in 2022. "I just kept it really easy, hoping that I could just hold on a little bit longer for this." Chock and Bates won the ice dance rhythm dance with 91.25 points, ahead of Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, who had 87.15 and Italy's Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri with 84.58.
