USA cricket team break India's 40-year old record
American team successfully defend a target of 123 in ODI match last done by India in 1985 Last updated: February 18, 2025 | 21:35 2 MIN READ USA cricketers Nosthush Kenjige was the pick of the bowlers claiming five wickets against Oman on Tuesday. X Dubai: The United States of American cricket team broke a long standing Indian record when they successfully defended a lowest total in an One-Day International match on Tuesday. USA playing against hosts Oman in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 match, managed to score just 122 runs batting first but later bounced back well to demolish the home team for only 65 to register a 57-run victory. It was in 1985 when India's 125 against Pakistan was the previous lowest total successfully defended in a full ODI match in the Rothmans Four-Nations Cup. India claimed a victory at the end of the match with a 38-run victory at the Sharjah International stadium. Spinners dominate The entire fixture between the USA and Oman was dictated and dominated by spin. Nine bowlers were used in the game, all of whom were spinners. Only ball-tweakers were used throughout the match, marking the affair as the first game after 4671 matches when a single delivery was not bowled by a pacer. A total of 19 wickets fell in the match, equalling the record for most wickets taken by spinners in an ODI match. During an ODI match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2011, 19 wickets were taken by spinners. USA and Oman combined to score a total of only 187 runs in 61 overs, making it the second-lowest aggregate in an ODI where both teams were dismissed. The 41-over game between India and Bangladesh in 2014 had an aggregate of 163 runs. During the match, Milind Kumar drove the USA's score with his well-composed 47* from 82 deliveries. After Oman won the toss, Shakeel Ahmad starred with the ball, picking up a three-wicket haul while giving away 20 runs. In Oman's pursuit of 123, Hammad Mirza waged a lone war for the hosts. With his 29 (43), he was the only player for Oman to cross double digits for Oman. Nosthush Kenjige spearheaded the spin attack for the USA and picked up a five-wicket haul. He weaved magic with his spin and saw Oman crumble to a paltry score of 65 and succumb to a 57-run defeat. Sign up for the Daily Briefing Get the latest news and updates straight to your inbox

Kenjige spins USA to dominant win against Oman
Muscat – Oman's spin-heavy strategy backfired as Nosthush Kenjige's career-best spell tore through their batting lineup, leading the USA to a commanding 57-run victory in the ICC World Cup League 2 at the Oman Cricket Academy ground on Tuesday. The left-arm spinner's five-wicket haul (5-11) proved decisive as Oman collapsed for just 65, their lowest-ever ODI total, while chasing a modest 123-run target. Previously, Oman's lowest ODI score was 81 against Namibia in Windhoek in April 2019. With this win, the USA avenged their earlier defeat against Oman in the tri-series and strengthened their position at the top of the points table with 22 points from 16 matches. Oman remained second with 18 at the end of the tri-series, which also featured Namibia (12 points from 16 games, while Canada, with four games in hand, are third on 16 points. Batting first, the USA struggled early, losing four wickets inside the first 10 overs. Oman's spinners, led by Shakeel Ahmed (3-20) and Aamir Kaleem (2-22), ran through the top order, reducing the visitors to 31-5. However, Milind Kumar (47 off 82, 6×4) held the innings together with two crucial partnerships. He added 30 runs with Aaron Jones (16) for the sixth wicket and another 33 with Sanjay Krishnamurthi (16) for the seventh, helping the USA post 122 before they were bowled out in 35.3 overs. Oman's spinners dominated the innings, with nine of the ten wickets falling to them with Kenjige run out. Shakeel Ahmed finished as the leading wicket-taker of the tri-series with 13 scalps. Samay Shrivastava (2/41), Siddharth Bukkapatnam (1/11), and Jay Odedra (1/23) also played key roles in restricting the USA. Chasing 123, Oman struggled from the outset as both openers, including skipper Jatinder Singh (7), fell cheaply. Hammad Mirza (29 off 43) was the only batter to offer resistance, but he found little support. Kenjige was well supported by the USA's spin attack, with Yasir Mohammad (2-10), Milind Kumar (2-17), and Harmeet Singh (1-25) contributing to Oman's downfall. Kumar was adjudged the player of the match for his all-round performance. Meanwhile, Oman's Jiten Ramanandi made his ODI debut, receiving his first cap from skipper Jatinder Singh. Brief scores: USA 122 in 35.3 overs (Milind Kumar 47, Aaron Jones 16, Sanjay Krishnamurthi 16; Shakeel Ahmed 3/20, Aamir Kaleem 2/22, Samay Shrivastava 2/41) beat Oman 65 in 25.3 overs (Hammad Mirza 29; Nosthush Kenjige 5/11, Milind Kumar 2/17, Yasir Mohammad 2/10).
