Eastern States Exposition leaders receive Patriot Award for military support
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Eastern States Exposition (ESE) President and CEO Gene Cassidy and Captain of Public Safety Johnny Ramirez were each recognized with the Patriot Award for their commitment to supporting military personnel and veterans. A representative from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) visited the Eastern States Exposition last Friday to present Cassidy and Ramirez with the award. The Patriot Award is bestowed upon employers who support military employees by offering flexible schedules and time off based on deployment. Holyoke unveils mural downtown to honor community leader Ramirez and Cassidy were nominated by ESE's Sergeant of Safety and Security, Christopher Thompson. Thompson has served in the military for over 28 years, with experience in both the Navy and Air Force. 'I want to thank you for putting my name in for nomination,' Cassidy said. 'Eastern States Exposition does not conscientiously think about these things. We do it by nature. In my office, I have a trophy that was once presented to our founder, Joshua Loring Brooks, in 1919, because of what he did to support the war efforts during the First World War. So, the history of Eastern States Exposition is not lost on me now.' During the reception, Cassidy signed a statement of support to affirm his continued commitment to actively serving military and veterans, which will be displayed in the Brooks Building on the ESE grounds. The Eastern States Exposition offers Military Appreciation Day on the first day of The Big E every year, granting free admission to all active-duty and retired military personnel and their dependents. Resources are provided throughout the fair for counseling, benefits, medical treatment, and other essentials. This year, Military Appreciation Day will be on September 12. Atlanta Braves Host Medal of Honor Recipients
The National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership will collaborate with the Atlanta Braves for an evening of recognition and reflection on May 23 during their Military Appreciation Day presented by T-Mobile at Truist Park as the Braves take on the San Diego Padres. This special day will include a pregame ceremony featuring a tribute to Medal of Honor recipients Edward C. Byers Jr., U.S. Navy retired, and Leroy A. Petry, U.S. Army retired, who will be honored on-field for their extraordinary service and sacrifice. The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest award for valor in combat. Today, only 61 living recipients remain — and two will take center stage at Truist Park to share the values that defined their service: courage, integrity, commitment, sacrifice, citizenship and patriotism. Their stories, shared in the presence of Braves fans and community leaders, offer lessons that transcend the battlefield and resonate across every facet of American life. The special on-field presentation will be one of several ways the Braves will commemorate Military Appreciation Day. Guests of the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership — including veterans, supporters and civic leaders — will gather in a private suite provided by the Braves to celebrate these heroes and the organization's mission to deliver values-based leadership education programming nationwide. The National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership is committed to preparing individuals across all walks of life to meet their moment. Through immersive programs and its upcoming flagship facility in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, the Center for Leadership is equipping tomorrow's leaders with the values that define the nation's greatest heroes. Granby resident honored during Military Appreciation Day at the State House in Boston
GRANBY, Mass. (WWLP) – Military Appreciation Day was held for the first time at the State House in Boston on Thursday. The state's highest lawmakers and military members, and their families, gathered in the House Chambers to be recognized. To show the state's appreciation, 135 veterans received governor's citations after being nominated by local legislators, including retired United States Army Staff Sergeant Michael Joseph Slater of Granby. First-ever Military Appreciation Day at the State House Staff Sergeant Slater was honored by State Senator Jake Oliveira from the Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester District. In a news release sent to 22News from the Office of State Senator Jake Oliveira, Staff Sergeant Slater served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Combat Engineer with the U.S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division. He earned the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Combat Action Badge. Tasked with route clearance—identifying and neutralizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to protect U.S. and allied forces—he routinely faced combat conditions that tested both skill and resolve. For his service, he earned the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Combat Action Badge. Since Slater's military retirement, he has developed outreach programs and expanded access to vital resources for local veterans. He continues this work at the Springfield Vet Center, providing one-on-one support to those who have served. 'It was a moving ceremony and an important reminder that service doesn't end when the uniform comes off,' said Senator Oliveira. 'Staff Sergeant Slater represents the very best of our military community—not only through his heroism in combat, but also through his deep, ongoing commitment to veterans across Western Massachusetts.' 'I was proud to stand alongside Staff Sergeant Slater at the State House as we paid tribute not just to his service, but to his continued leadership and care for others,' Senator Oliveira said. 'This event reminded us that our military heroes walk among us every day, in our neighborhoods, our town halls, and our veterans' centers, and that they continue to serve long after their tours of duty end.' Military celebrations and ceremonies will continue across the state through the weekend, and on Monday's Memorial Day. First-ever Military Appreciation Day at the State House
BOSTON (WWLP) – The governor held a second veterans event Thursday, honoring the military ahead of Memorial Day. Hundreds of veterans came to Beacon Hill on Thursday to commemorate the first-ever Military Appreciation Day at the State House. The state's highest lawmakers and military members, and their families, gathered in the House Chambers to be recognized. To show the state's appreciation, 135 veterans received governor's citations after being nominated by local legislators, including veterans and military spouses from Springfield, Northampton, and elsewhere. The governor spoke about what her team is doing to improve veteran welfare in the Bay State. 'You think about the resurgence of the Chelsea and Holyoke Soldiers' home, you think about our commitment to end veteran homelessness in the state, that is work that we all do together,' said Gov. Healey. The Secretary of Veterans Affairs spoke about the significance of this event, the first in the state, in ensuring veterans are given the honor and respect they earned with their service. While Massachusetts' veteran suicide rates are lower than the national average, state lawmakers are working on increasing mental health resources and awareness to lower rates further. 'We felt that it was important to honor the fallen with a reminder that their legacy continues with the work of the living,' said Jon Santiago. Other state initiatives include housing and transportation assistance, community building, and transition assistance. Military celebrations and ceremonies will continue across the state through the weekend, and on Monday's Memorial Day.
