Kerala Police join hands with Milma for awareness against cyber fraud

The Kerala Police are joining hands with the State Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, alias Milma, for creating awareness on cyber security. In view of increasing number of people falling prey to cyber fraud, the State police came out with an innovative drive, displaying their cyber helpline numbers on the Milma milk packets being distributed in the State. Kerala Police's cyber helpline number, 1930, and cyber safety messages will be printed on Milma milk packets distributed in the State from June 25 onwards, a police statement said on Saturday. 30 lakh houses The partnership would help reach cyber security messages and police toll-free number to approximately 30 lakh houses, headquarters ADGP S. Sreejith said. Most of the victims of cyber fraud are ordinary people who are not sufficiently aware of such traps, he said. The new initiative is expected to take the awareness messages to remote areas as people use the Milma milk extensively even there, he said. The objective of the joint campaign is to enable people to face the digital world with caution, the officer added. Limited to youngsters The statement further said the current cyber awareness messages and cautionary advice are limited to youngsters who use social media, and therefore fail to reach a segment of population that include homemakers, elderly and so on. The present joint campaign with Milma is expected to address this issue to some extent, it said. As per statistics, Malayalis have lost ₹1,200 crore to cyber fraud in the last three years, the police statement added.

Milma packets to carry cyber safety awareness message

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From Saturday onwards, the Milma milk sachets will be delivering not just 'goodness' as its famed tagline says, but a word of caution too. Worried by the surge in cyber crimes, The Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, known by its trade name Milma, has decided to run cyber safety awareness message on milk packets. The endeavour is a result of police's effort to amplify its cyber awareness drive by using the massive reach and market penetration of the brand. Sources in the cyber police division told TNIE that the objective is to make the topic a matter of discussion among Milma consumers. The brand has got a strong reach in the state with about 33 lakh packets being sold daily. 'The brand has got a loyal and formidable customer base. While seeing the sachets, the text would catch their attention and by getting exposed to the content regularly, the public will develop a serious attitude towards the highlighted issue,' it said. The sources said the awareness drive via Milma milk sachets will run for three months, and one positive aspect of this exercise is that people in rural parts and in households would be able to gauge the seriousness of cyber crimes. 'Already there are lots of awareness drives happening via various platforms. But the drive intended via Milma has got a clear advantage. Women, children and elderly people will be exposed to our message as they will be handling the milk packets multiple times daily. The more they come across the message, they will understand the need for keeping up guard while handling cyberspace,' the sources added. Only one type of awareness content will be printed on the sachets and the exercise will be limited to just milk packets as they have got the maximum reach. The collective loot from Kerala by cyber criminals over the past three years was more than Rs 10 billion. Fraudsters swindled Rs 1,021 crore between 2022 and 2024, of which Rs 763 crore was siphoned off last year. While Keralites lost Rs 48 crore to cyber fraud in 2022, the amount rose to Rs 210 crore in 2023, the official data revealed. A total of 41,426 complaints were registered in 2024, which roughly implies that as many people lost money to various cyber fraud activities.

Dairy farmers urged to increase milk production

Minister for Dairy Development J. Chinchurani inaugurated the International Year of Cooperatives observance organised by the Malabar Union of Milma in Kozhikode on Friday (May 2). She also launched Milma's annual plan for the year 2025–26. In her inaugural address, the Minister urged dairy farmers to increase milk production by providing additional green fodder to cattle and supplying more milk to Milma. She praised Malabar Milma for distributing maximum profits among dairy farmers through additional milk price support and fodder subsidies. She also highlighted the establishment of a milk powder manufacturing unit at Moorkanad in Malappuram district, set up at a cost of ₹136 crore, and emphasised that increased milk supply is essential for the success of the facility. The Minister distributed benefits under the 'Ksheera Sumangalai' and 'Sayanthanam' projects, while the chief guest, MLA Thottathil Raveendran, handed over assistance for the Veterinary Ashraya Medical Store and flood insurance claims. The Minister announced that 29 veterinary ambulances would soon be operational across the State—two in each district—available via the toll-free number 1962. 'You need not worry about the unavailability of veterinarians late at night. Just contact the call centre in Thiruvananthapuram, and the service will be available at your doorstep,' she said. Chairman of the Milma Malabar Union K.S. Mani presided over the event. Director of the Department of Dairy Development Shalini Gopinath, general manager of Kerala Gramin Bank Pradeep Padman, managing director of Malabar Milma K.C. James, and others were present.
