Woodruff left his appearance on Tuesday after getting hit by a 108 mph liner off the bat of Gwinnett's Cade Bunnell. He had an X-ray and other testing to confirm the diagnosis of a bruise. He missed the Brewers' 2023 NL Wild Card series loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks with a shoulder injury that required surgery and prevented him from pitching last year. He was pitching for Nashville and preparing to return to the big leagues last month when he experienced tendinitis in his right ankle. ___ AP MLB:

(AP) — Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff took a line drive to his throwing elbow during a rehabilitation appearance with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. Woodruff left the game after getting struck by a batted ball from Gwinnett's Cade Bunnell that had a 108-mph exit velocity. Advertisement Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said after the Brewers' 4-2 loss in Cincinnati on Tuesday night that his understanding was that X-rays on Woodruff were negative. Murphy added that Woodruff would undergo a CT scan on Wednesday. The incident could cause one more delay in Woodruff's long-awaited return to the majors. The two-time All-Star last pitched in a major league game on Sept. 23, 2023. Woodruff missed the Brewers' 2023 postseason with a shoulder injury that required surgery and prevented him from pitching last year. He was pitching for Nashville and getting ready to get back to the big leagues last month when tendinitis in his right ankle slowed his return. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Jeff Dean) CINCINNATI (AP) — A bruised right hand didn't have any effect on Christian Yelich. The Milwaukee Brewers designated hitter — named the National League's Player of the Week before Monday night's game against the Cincinnati Reds — was back in the lineup and continued his hot streak with a solo home run in the third inning to lift the Brewers to a 3-2 victory. Advertisement 'Sore hand or not, he crushed two balls tonight. So, he's living up to his Player of the Week (honor),' manager Pat Murphy said. Yelich left Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies during the third inning after being hit by a sinker from Ranger Suarez in the first inning. Once he found out X-rays were negative, the 2018 NL MVP was preparing to make sure he wouldn't have to take a day off. 'Worked on it the rest of the game (yesterday) did some stuff on the flight (from Philadelphia to Cincinnati) and came in early today. It was fine,' he said. 'Once I knew it wasn't broken it was like yeah, we'll get back out there. It's something we all take pride in, showing up for each other and being able to play.' Yelich is a pivotal reason why the Brewers have won eight straight games. He has a nine-game hitting streak — the second-longest active run in the majors — and is batting .450 (18 for 40) with six home runs and 14 RBIs. Advertisement It is the sixth time Yelich has been the NL Player of the Week, but the first since April 2019. He had three homers last week, including his first walk-off with a grand slam on May 27 against the Boston Red Sox. Yelich extended his hitting streak when he drove Brady Singer's slider on a full count 417 feet to straightaway center and off the batter's eye. 'It was a 3-2 count, not really knowing what was going to happen there. He threw a couple sliders that I swung over, so I knew there was a chance it could show up,' Yelich said. Yelich also lined a ball to center in the sixth inning that looked like might fall for extra bases, but Cincinnati's TJ Friedl made a leaping grab. Advertisement The 33-year-old is a two-time NL batting champion, but missed 81 games last season due to a lower back injury. Yelich was batting .184 on May 21 but has raised his average 49 points during his streak. He has 13 homers on the season, which is tied for eighth-most in the National League. 'I know he's worked at it. I mean, he takes it really personally,' Murphy said. 'He's been doing it a long time. He feels that responsibility to his teammates. He never gives himself enough credit.' While Yelich is on one of his best streaks in six years, he is trying to maintain his focus on the present. 'Each year is its own year, they're all different," he said. "You just try to stay focused on your work in the day-to-day. You know, flush the previous day whether it is good or bad, and have good focus on what you want to do and your approach that day. Kind of stay locked in and put blinders on.' ___ AP MLB:

Brewers demote Logan Henderson despite success as team anticipates return of other pitchers

MILWAUKEE — Despite being one of the best pitchers in the Milwaukee Brewers' injury-plagued rotation this season, Logan Henderson is headed for the minors. The Brewers optioned Henderson to Triple-A Nashville while reinstating DL Hall from the 60-day injured list. The move came Monday prior to Milwaukee's game against the Boston Red Sox in the afternoon. Henderson has compiled a 3-0 record and a 1.71 ERA over his first four career starts this season. He became the first pitcher in franchise history to win his first three major league games and the first in the majors' modern era to start his career with a win in three consecutive appearances while striking out seven or more batters in each game. Henderson leads the Brewers starting staff in ERA and in strikeouts per nine innings (12.4). Manager Pat Murphy said 'the kid has been so good,' but with the Brewers expecting the return of two other key rotation members, the timing is right to send him down. 'Quite frankly, for some of these young guys, get a blow. Get a rest,' Murphy said. 'They're just not machines.' Along with Hall, the Brewers expect the return of José Quintana, who has been out with a left shoulder impingement, and Brandon Woodruff, a former top-of-the rotation starter and two-time All-Star who hasn't pitched in the majors since September 2023 after undergoing major shoulder surgery. Woodruff appeared set to rejoin the rotation earlier this month but his rehab was temporarily stalled by right ankle tendinitis. 'We're going to need starters,' Murphy said. 'We have to keep guys on schedule. We've got Woody coming back. We've got Quintana coming back. We need pitching. We have to preserve as many of these guys as we can. To preserve them, the best thing is to keep these guys built up. If they are not going to be in the major league rotation, then make sure they go down and get their pitches in.' Henderson made an immediate splash after being called up in April. In his major league debut against the Athletics on April 20, he gave up three hits and one run over six innings while walking one and striking out nine. He pitched five innings on Sunday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, giving up five hits and one run while walking two and striking out six. In doing so, Henderson became only the second pitcher since 1901 to strike out at least six and allow two or fewer runs in each of his first four career starts in the majors. 'He wasn't quite as sharp yesterday, but he's been so good,' Murphy said. 'He's handled it so well. The conversation about going down. He totally understands how this works. (Henderson said) just know I'm going to go down there and work my tail off. The kid's a delight to have around.' Murphy deemed Henderson's unexpected demotion as 'solid thinking' and said the 23-year-old righty likely will be on an innings limit this season. 'There's concern,' Murphy said. 'He's had injury history.' Hall, who is cleared from injury, had been sidelined since spring training with a left lat strain. 'With the past two years having the injury bug, I'm itching every day to get back on the field,' Hall said.
