When is the last day to buy Southwest tickets with free checked bags in Milwaukee?

Southwest Airlines, Milwaukee's largest carrier, will no longer allow passengers to check two free bags starting on or after May 28. Under the new policy, only Southwest Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers will get two free checked bags. A-List Members will receive one free checked bag, and Rapid Rewards Credit Card members will receive a credit for one checked bag. Other travelers will need to pay for their first and second checked bags, although as of May 20, the airline has not disclosed the fee amount. Here's what you need to know about the new Southwest baggage policy: Starting on May 28, most passengers will have to pay for their first and second checked bags. Weight and size restrictions are still in place, according to its website. As of May 20, the airline has not notified passengers of the baggage fee for the first and second checked bags. For comparison, American and United airlines charge between $35 and $50 for the first checked bag. Standard checked bags must weigh up to 50 pounds each and be 62 inches in size. According to Southwest's website, bag fees are the following: Third or additional bag: $150 per bag Oversize bag: $200 per bag (max 80 inches) Overweight bag: $150 per bag (51-70 pounds) or $200 per bag (71-100 pounds) Tickets purchased before May 28 will include two free checked bags. If you purchase a ticket before May 27 and alter it on or after May 28, you will be required to pay the checked-bag fee. All passengers can still bring a free carry-on bag and one personal item on Southwest flights. Carry-on bags must fit in the overhead compartment and be smaller than 24 x 16 x 10 inches. Southwest offers 18 nonstop flights from Milwaukee, according to the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. The airline launched service between Milwaukee and Austin earlier this spring. What happened to the post office at Mitchell International Airport?

The U.S. Postal Service office near the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport has moved to another location a mile and a half away. In mid-April, the airport mail facility closed its 5500 S. Howell Ave. location and has since reopened at 552 W. Layton Ave. The new location is in a strip mall, next door to Oakland Gyros. Airport mail facilities are responsible for receiving and distributing mail that is transported by air, according to the USPS. Unlike other post offices in the area, the Howell Avenue airport mail facility was also open late on weekdays and open on Sunday. Here's what to know about the relocated post office, including whether it's keeping the same expanded hours. The relocated post office will still have expanded hours, according to the USPS website. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It provides mailing and passport services. The Layton Avenue location is now the closest post office to the airport. However, there is still a USPS mailbox inside the airport, near the entrance to Concourse C, airport spokesperson Harold Mester wrote to the Journal Sentinel. The airport post office lost its Howell Avenue lease amid the ongoing redevelopment of Mitchell International Airport, the USPS said in a March 2024 news release announcing the move. Though the airport did not offer the USPS a lease renewal, Mester said the post office's Howell Avenue lease ran through October 2025, and the USPS decided to leave early. The site is a part of the airport's sprawling, multi-year construction project, but "there are no immediate plans for redevelopment" of the location, he added. Florida-based carrier Spirit Airlines will launch its nonstop flights to Detroit from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport this summer with service operating twice per week, the airport announced Wednesday. The budget airline is offering nonstop service from Milwaukee to Detroit starting June 13 on Friday and Monday with fares as low as $37 each way. These new flights from Milwaukee will be operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft featuring 174 standard seats. Milwaukee's largest airline will no longer offer two free checked bags to most passengers

Southwest Airlines, the largest carrier serving Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, will soon end its tradition of offering two free checked bags to all passengers. Beginning May 28, only Southwest Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers will get two free checked bags. A-List Members and select customers will receive one free checked bag, while Rapid Rewards Credit Card members will receive a credit for one checked bag. All other passengers will have to pay for their first and second checked bags, with weight and size restrictions still in place. "We recognize these changes may be a disappointment to some, but know we're committed to building a Southwest that will continue to offer you low fares, convenient flights to destinations you want, and a travel experience that is rewarding," Southwest said in an email sent to customers Tuesday morning. In addition to baggage fees, Southwest is adjusting its Southwest Rapid Rewards loyalty program, offering more points for Business Select fares while decreasing rewards for lower-tier Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus tickets. In a news release Tuesday, the airline said these moves aim to "deepen and reward loyalty between Southwest and its most engaged Customers." Southwest will also introduce a new Basic fare for the most budget-conscious travelers, along with assigned seating and extra legroom options, for tickets purchased on or after May 28. Tuesday's announcements are the latest in a series of changes for Southwest. Last month, the airline, which previously required customers to book directly through its channels, began allowing travelers to book tickets on the travel booking site Expedia. According to the Milwaukee airport, Southwest offers 18 nonstop flight destinations from MKE, including service between Milwaukee and Austin, which launched March 6. Southwest is also adding service between MKE and San Diego this fall. What's being built near Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport?

Construction crews have broken ground on a new multi-million dollar air cargo facility at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. Formerly used by the 440th Airlift Wing of the Air Force Reserve, the new 337,000-square foot facility will feature a dedicated air cargo building, a new Milwaukee County maintenance facility and enhancements to adjacent taxiways, according to an airport news release. Here's a look at the latest development on the project. Dallas, Texas-based Crow Holdings is developing the facility, which will have the ability to accommodate five B747-400 aircraft at the same time and expects to generate over $1.3 million in annual aircraft landing fees and more than $1 million in annual ground lease rents and fees, according to the release. "When this project is complete, building and suppliers will be able to transport their raw materials and finished products in and out of Wisconsin more quickly and efficiently," said Airport Director Brain Dranzik in a statement. "This investment will lead to the creation of hundreds of jobs and have a major economic impact for our community," added Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley in a statement. The former 440th campus was turned over to the airport in 2008. Since then, some of the buildings are currently used by the airport, while others were leased to short-term tenants. The 440th unit relocated to North Carolina in 2007. The new facility is estimated to be completed in 2026, according to the release. High levels of "forever chemicals" were previously detected at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, and were linked to the use of firefighting foam used to put out high-temperature fires like those that would occur when jet fuel ignites. As construction moves forward on the project, airport officials are working together with the developer, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Air force to mitigate any PFAS contamination at that location, spokesperson Harold Mester wrote to the Journal Sentinel.
