Midland Christian students spend Spring Break giving back to the community

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- This week, about 260 students from Midland Christian School have spent their Spring Break giving back to the community by making repairs to 17 homes throughout the city. The acts of service were part of Christmas in Action, a non-profit that partners with groups to repair the homes of low-income elderly or disabled people. The mission of the organization is to put Christian values into action- and that's just what these students did beginning on March 3 when they set to work to install new siding and windows, paint, and clean up the yards of more than a dozen Midland homeowners. 'So, we've got almost 260 kids out and engaged in the community doing mission work right in their backyard. We help elderly and disabled people in the community that are low-income homeowners, and we try to help…keep them in a house that will keep them safe,' said Christmas in Action Director of Operations, Nathan Knowles. Not only have the students been giving back, they've been learning new skills that will last a lifetime. 'Many of them (students) have never hung siding before…they get an opportunity to use tools that they've never used to cut things and hang siding. We did a whole demolition of the siding that was on here. It took us an hour and a half this morning. But it's stuff that these kids have never done before,' said MCS teacher Mimi Poole. 'I mean, we're doing basic things like ripping off siding, cleaning up after ourselves. We're measuring, we're using saws. So, we're learning safety and then just being courteous to the homeowner. So, I volunteered last year when we had our missions week…and this is a great way to reach out and give back to the community. And as a school, we're all doing it together. So you get to hang out with your friends and help the community out. We're learning how to work together, more as a family, with your friends, people you don't know,' said MCS Senior, Cash Willhite. MCS has partnered with Christmas in Action for more than 15 years with one goal in mind, to make a positive impact in the community. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
