SEVENTEEN's HAPPY BURSTDAY Tops 2025 K-Pop Album Sales So Far

Last Updated: HAPPY BURSTDAY becomes SEVENTEEN's fifth best-selling album in terms of first-week sales. Global K-pop group SEVENTEEN 's new album, HAPPY BURSTDAY, has made waves not only with its sound and performances but also with the massive first-week sales numbers. According to a statement by their agency Pledis Entertainment, HAPPY BURSTDAY recorded a staggering 2,521,208 physical copies sold in its first week. These sales were tracked from May 26 to June 1, based on data from Hanteo Chart. With this figure, SEVENTEEN now holds the record for the highest first-week album sales for any K-pop release in 2025 so far. This marks a significant achievement for the group. HAPPY BURSTDAY becomes SEVENTEEN's fifth-best-selling album in terms of first-week sales. The only albums that sold more in their opening weeks were SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN, FML, SPILL THE FEELS, and 17 IS RIGHT HERE, each of which crossed the 2.9 million mark. The timing of this release is also special. SEVENTEEN is currently celebrating their 10th debut anniversary and this album is their fifth full-length release. To mark the decade-long journey, the group hosted a three-day event in Seoul last week. The celebration included a one-of-a-kind performance on the Jamsu Bridge in central Seoul. This is a historic moment because SEVENTEEN became the first K-pop act ever to perform on the bridge. At the celebration, member Mingyu shared the meaning behind the title, saying, 'This year marks our 10th anniversary, and since it's our fifth full-length album, we titled it 'Happy Burstday.' It's a celebration of our 10 years and a combination of the words 'burst,' as in explosion or release and 'birthday.'" While members Jeonghan and Wonwoo were absent due to their ongoing military service, the rest of the group delivered a memorable show. The hour-long concert included a total of 12 tracks including songs like Rock With You, God of Music and Very Nice. The night ended with a fireworks display over the Han River. HAPPY BURSTDAY brings together a wide mix of collaborators. Alongside SEVENTEEN's longtime producers Bumzu and Shannon Bae, the album features big names like Pharrell, Timbaland, BTS' longtime producer PDogg and K-indie artist Ha Hyunsang. The album also includes solo songs by each member. These tracks give fans a new way to enjoy their unique voices and styles. SEVENTEEN consists of 13 members: Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon and Dino. First Published: June 03, 2025, 09:11 IST

(Photo by Christopher Polk/Penske Media via Getty Images) K-pop's global momentum isn't just confined to chart-topping hits and massive album sales this year: it's on full display under the bright lights of arenas and stadiums worldwide with new milestones hit by the likes ofSEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, BTS' J-Hope,TVXQ!, BABYMONSTER and more. Following the latest reports on midyear tour figures, the K-pop industry's touring business has surpassed previous milestones with entertainment agencies leaning more heavily on live-performance revenue as we near the second half of 2025. It marks an apparent shift in K-pop, transitioning from being dependent on album sales to concert-fueled growth, with the trend unlikely to swing back as the rest of the year promises more prominent shows on the way. Billboard's midyear Boxscore report revealed that SEVENTEEN firmly established themselves as a world-class live act. Based on the reported touring data from October 1, 2024 through March 31, 2025, the boy band earned a staggering $120.9 million in gross revenue with 842,000 tickets sold during the period. Before celebrating their 10th anniversary in May, the stars secured the Number 3 spot on Billboard Boxscore's all-genre midyear list — only slightly behind Coldplay and Shakira, who are on massive stadium tours of their own with that have grossed a respective $142.1 million and $130 million. Remarkably, SEVENTEEN essentially doubled its midyear gross for the second consecutive year, jumping from $30 million in 2023 to $67.5 million in 2024. SEVENTEEN's third-place finish marks the highest ranking ever achieved by a Korean act in Billboard Boxscore's midyear tally, surpassing BTS' previous Number 4 midyear placement from 2022. But SEVENTEEN wasn't the lone live phenomenon. Five K-pop acts made the all-genre Top 50 ranking for Billboard Boxscore, up from three in 2023 and two in 2022. Fellow boy band ATEEZ, as well as J-Hope of BTS, follow SEVENTEEN with $28.4 million and $28.1 million grossed, respectively, with J-Hope noted as the first K-pop soloist ever to land on the midyear overall Top Tours chart. Rounding out this top five are ENHYPEN and Tomorrow X Together, grossing $25.6 million and $25.1 million, respectively. Overall, K-pop acts on the midyear Top Tours chart generated $228 million while selling 1.6 million tickets from 78 reported shows. Billboard reports that the scene's 2025 showing is a 79% increase over the 2024 total, which had already jumped 93% from 2023. In just two years' time, K-pop's presence on the midyear Boxscore has more than tripled. All artists appear for SMTOWN Live 2025 in Los Angeles, California These touring triumphs highlight a strategic pivot among South Korea's entertainment giants. As the industry's reliably massive album sales have softened, live performances have become the primary driver of growth. Major players, including HYBE, SM Entertainment, and YG Entertainment, reported first-quarter revenue surges, primarily driven by concert earnings. Check out a breakdown of the year-over-year first-quarter numbers for each of the 'big four' Korean-pop agencies below, with data provided by The Chosun Daily. Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. of Stray Kids perform at the ... More 2024 Billboard Music Awards. (Photo by JYP Entertainment/Penske Media via Getty Images) With still a month to go until July, the remainder of 2025 appears to be shaping up as a landmark period for further live and touring growth. As further evidence, HYBE CEO Park Jiwon noted in a recent earnings call that the conglomerate has more than 150 concerts confirmed for 2025 from its artists, with additional announcements to follow. 'Both the scale and audience size will expand further in the second half,' Park said, per Chosun Daily. Once again, peep the 2025 preview for the four major agencies. With unprecedented midyear grosses and Korean agencies realigning and diverting resources toward lucrative global tours, the K-pop industry's blockbuster second half indicates its revenue mix is likely shifting even more toward live performances and, with that, setting new records around the world.

The bridge, the beats, the burst Seventeen's 10th anniversary party shakes up K-pop

Boy band's milestone party draws 10,000 to Seoul's Hangang Park It's rare for a K-pop group — boy band or girl group — to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Most acts fail to survive the so-called 'seven-year curse,' a widely observed trend where many disband or undergo significant member changes around their seventh year. The standard contract term set by the Fair Trade Commission in Korea is also seven years. Seventeen, however, beat the odds. While members Jeonghan and Wonwoo were absent at the show due to their military service, the group marked its decadelong journey in a groundbreaking way — by performing on the Jamsu Bridge in central Seoul, the first K-pop act to do so. The anniversary concert, titled 'B-Day Party: Burst Stage,' kicked off 20 minutes behind schedule at 7:50 p.m., Sunday, opening with the premiere of the group's new main track, 'Thunder,' from the fifth studio album, 'Happy Burstday,' released on Monday at 6 p.m. Around 6,000 Carats — Seventeen's fandom — selected via online lottery, gathered on the low-lying bridge next to Banpo Hangang Park to sing along to the unreleased song in unison. 'We imagined all kinds of things when we first heard we'd be performing on Jamsu Bridge,' said member Mingyu during the show. 'We wondered, 'Will there be yachts? Will the sunset be pretty? What if it rains?' But everything turned out perfect. I hope everyone enjoys the show to the end.' Hoshi added, 'They say we're the first K-pop group to ever perform on Jamsu Bridge,' highlighting the occasion's significance. DK followed up by thanking fans: 'It's all thanks to our Carats. None of this would've been possible without you.' Those who without tickets still joined in, gathering around the nearby Banpo Hangang Park to watch the performance in real-time via large LED screens installed across the area. After performing 'Thunder,' Woozi shared a behind-the-scenes story about the song's production. 'It's a powerful track, but after 10 years of making albums, I started to doubt myself — 'Maybe I don't have it anymore.' But inspiration struck like thunder. That's how this song came about. I hope you enjoy it just as it is,' Woozi said. The group then performed the B-side 'HBD' from the new album and its 2022 hit 'Hot' from the fourth album 'Face the Sun.' 'This year marks our 10th anniversary, and since it's our fifth full-length album, we titled it 'Happy Burstday,'' said Mingyu. 'It's a celebration of our 10 years and a combination of the words 'burst,' as in explosion or release and 'birthday.'' 'The album includes three group tracks including 'Thunder' and solo songs by all 13 members — 16 songs in total,' Vernon said. The hour-long concert featured a total of 12 songs, including fan favorites like 'Rock With You,' 'God of Music' and 'Very Nice.' The performance was followed by a dazzling fireworks display over the Han River, adding to the party atmosphere. Visual effects using the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain — installed on Banpo Bridge directly above Jamsu Bridge — heightened the spectacle. As the group sang 'Our Dawn is Hotter Than Day,' the fountain lit up in Seventeen's official colors, rose quartz and serenity. During 'God of Music,' the water jets danced in sync with the rhythm, amplifying the festive mood. The event was livestreamed globally via Hybe's global fandom platform, Weverse; Hybe Labels' YouTube channel and Naver's ZikZok platform — allowing fans from Japan, China, the US, Indonesia, Singapore and beyond to join in virtually. As the concert neared its end, Hoshi said, 'It feels like we just debuted yesterday, and now it's already been 10 years. The concert just started, but it's already over.' DK added, 'Performing here is truly overwhelming.' Seungkwan wrapped up the night by saying, 'Just being able to perform in this space felt like a miracle.' To mark the occasion, Seventeen also hosted a three-day fan event starting Friday on Some Sevit — a cluster of artificial islands on the Han River. The event included a 'Seventeen History Zone' chronicling the group's journey, an interactive message wall, an offline version of the group's mobile game 'Puzzle Seventeen,' a photo card exchange area and self-photo booths.
