Puppy taken in at Massachusetts animal shelter suffers from serious disease

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A puppy, who was taken in by Second Chance Animal Services, is being treated for a serious and potentially deadly disease. Second Chance Animal Services is reminding pet owners to take proactive steps in preventing heartworm. This disease is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and can be deadly if left untreated. Mississippi dog seeks new home again at Massachusetts shelter Signs of heartworm in dogs and cats include the following: A persistent cough Reluctance to move or exercise Fatigue Reduced appetite Weight loss Vomiting Gagging Buddy, a 10-month-old Mini Australian Shepherd, tested positive for heartworm. He is now undergoing treatment at Second Chance Animal Services. The non-profit organization is seeking donations to help aid in Buddy's treatment, which will cost approximately $900. To donate visit Once Buddy is cured, he will be available for adoption. 'This is completely avoidable and heartbreaking,' said Lindsay Doray, Chief Development Officer at Second Chance. 'Buddy has a potential adopter waiting for him, but his heartworm diagnosis stands in the way of his happily-ever-after. A simple monthly preventative could have saved Buddy from this ordeal, and we want to use his story to encourage all dog owners to talk to their veterinarian about heartworm prevention.' To prevent heartworm, many FDA-approved products are available with a veterinarian's prescription. Second Chance offers affordable care including heartworm testing and preventatives at four of its Community Veterinary Hospitals. They are located in North Brookfield, Worcester, Springfield, and Southbridge.
