(OPP photo) 'The goal of the joint enforcement initiative was to educate both local residents and visiting tourists on road and hunting safety, as well as fishing and hunting regulations,' police said. A total of 80 of the 500 drivers underwent alcohol testing and no impaired drivers were detected. Officials also issued two warnings for taking aggregate without a permit, three warnings for failing to remove the plug from a boat and nine warnings were given for improperly skinned or packaged fish. 'Additionally, four black bears were inspected,' the release said. The OPP charged one driver for having a radar detector in their vehicle, a driver from Minnesota had a radar detector removed from his vehicle and a Thunder Bay driver was charged with driving while prohibited. His vehicle was impounded. (OPP photo) Police also issued several warnings, including one for possessing more than one licence, driving without a validation sticker on the licence plate, two warnings each for having an insecure load and not having a licence plate on a trailer.

A dog was wounded in North Bay recently when it was attacked by a bear. A dog was wounded in North Bay recently when it was attacked by a bear. The incident took place May 25 at the end of Tower Drive, North Bay Police spokesperson Merv Shantz said in an email. 'Apparently, it happened a couple of kilometres past the dead end,' Shantz said. The owners took their dog to an emergency veterinarian in Barrie, he said. 'It is now doing better,' Shantz said. 'We didn't really have any involvement, as the people contacted the (Ministry of Natural Resources) and animal welfare.' A message to the MNR from CTV News seeking details about the incident has not yet been returned.

Approximately 400 residents from Webequie First Nation are expected to be transported to Barrie as part of a Phase 1 evacuation prioritizing elders, children, and individuals with medical conditions. According to a Saturday evening update by Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), there were 16 active wildland fires in the Northwest Region, including two new ones discovered near Thunder Bay and Nipigon. There were also three active wildland fires in the Northeast Region, including a new one near Sudbury. Barrie's deputy fire chief told CTV News that their aid plan is very 'preliminary' but confirmed that they are preparing to host evacuees early this week. The MNR says the fire hazard is 'high' to 'extreme' across most the Northwest Region and 'low' to 'moderate' across the Northeast Region. Note: This is a developing story. Timmins still has a problem with people illegally dumping trash, so it's stepping up fines and enforcement. Sergio Arangio reports. 2021: Cracking down on illegal dumping in Timmins A Cochrane, Ont., man was fined $1,001 for dumping a single bag of garbage on public land. John Sullivan pleaded guilty to the offence, which is a violation under the Public Lands Act. In a news release Friday, the Ministry of Natural Resources said the incident took place Oct. 8, 2023, in Hanna Township, south of Cochrane. 'The officers discovered that garbage had been deposited on public lands at the Little Lake access point parking lot,' the release said. 'The investigation led conservation officers to Sullivan who admitted to the offence.' Justice of the Peace Estelle Bérubé heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane on Dec. 3, 2024.
