Morocco-Italy driver's license exchange agreement takes effect

Announced as early as last April, the mutual recognition of driver's licenses between Morocco and Italy will come into effect tomorrow, Tuesday, June 3, and will remain in place until June 3, 2030. This initiative is the result of a bilateral agreement signed on March 27, 2024, which outlines the procedures allowing holders of a Moroccan driver's license to convert their document into an Italian license and vice versa, in accordance with specific provisions from the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT). In Italy, Moroccan citizens residing in the country can drive with their Moroccan license for one year. After this period, a conversion is required. Applications for this purpose can be submitted to the Civil Motorization Offices (UMC), following the regulations outlined in the agreement. A circular detailing the requirements for this process is available online.

Morocco and Italy Finalize Driving License Accord for June 3 Start

Rabat – Morocco and Italy will begin implementing their agreement on the mutual recognition and conversion of driving licenses on June 3, 2025, Italy's Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport confirmed on Tuesday. The deal allows Moroccan and Italian nationals living in each other's countries to exchange their driver's licenses without going through a full requalification process . Authorities from both countries say the initiative seeks to ease daily life for residents and reduce administrative hurdles. The ministry described the agreement as 'a significant achievement' that follows months of coordination since its signing on March 27, 2024. 'Thanks to the new agreement, it will be easier to convert driving licenses for citizens of both countries residing abroad, thus allowing for faster integration into the economic and social fabric,' the statement read. Italy´s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and Morocco's ambassador to Italy, Youssef Balla, signed the document during an official ceremony in Rome. This development came just months after the previous Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Benabdeljalil, announced that Moroccans could drive in 20 countries using their Moroccan licenses. With the procedures now finalized, the Italian ministry said the agreement would help citizens integrate more easily into local communities, both socially and economically. For many Moroccans living in Italy and Italians residing in Morocco, the agreement addresses a practical need long raised by diaspora communities. It also reflects a growing cooperation between the two countries on issues that affect everyday life.
