Delhi CM vows 2,000 new e-buses by 2026

Chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday that the government will introduce 2,000 more Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (Devi) buses in the Capital by the end of this year and will also provide subsidies on electric vehicles (EVs). The CM was addressing the public at the Aironomics 2025 summit, which was focused on scaling solutions to combat India's air pollution crisis. 'With regards to private transportation, an EV policy will be brought by the government so people who are driving scooters or cars are encouraged to buy EVs as the government will give subsidies on the same,' she added. At the occasion organised under the Bharat Climate Forum, the CM said that the government will implement schemes to address scrapping of end-of-life vehicles, which are a major contributor to pollution. Further, addressing concerns of pollution caused by construction activities, CM Gupta said all high-rise buildings have been asked to install water sprinklers so the city can fight dust pollution. 'Sweeping can lead to more problems than solutions. To tackle this, first, we must develop more green belts in the city. Moreover, in all the 70 assemblies of Delhi, highly upgraded machines are going to be used which will have integrated smog gun, water sprinkling system as well as sweeping mechanism. I believe as this has been processed and the government continues to work, Delhi will feel better during this year's peak pollution system,' CM Gupta said. Later, the summit also hosted a panel discussion on reaffirming 'Delhi's political will to lead on clean air while acknowledging the governance complexity across multiple jurisdictions.' Speaking on the topic, Bhupinder Bhalla, former secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said, 'Having worked in Delhi government, one realises the problems that arise due to involvement of multiple agencies. The grey areas that arise out of this intersection have to be dealt with in order to overcome the governance challenges.'

North East draws ₹38,856 crore RE investment; region holds 147 GW clean energy potential: Joshi

New Delhi: A total of 115 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹38,856 crore have been signed for renewable energy projects in the North Eastern Region, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Friday. Addressing the Ministerial Session on 'Green Northeast: Advancing Renewable Energy for Sashakt Bharat' at the Rising North East Investors Summit 2025, Joshi stated that the region has untapped renewable energy potential, including more than 129 GW from large hydro projects and over 18 GW from pumped storage plants. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has allocated 10 per cent of its annual scheme budget specifically for the North Eastern Region. The Minister said enhanced financial support is also being provided, including 10 per cent higher Central Financial Assistance (CFA) under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and 20 per cent higher CFA for Components B and C of the PM-KUSUM scheme. A 20 MW solar park has been commissioned in Mizoram's Champhai district. A 25 MW green hydrogen plant is under development in Assam, which already hosts the country's first pure green hydrogen facility. More than 2,000 individuals from the region have been trained under MNRE-supported skill development initiatives such as Suryamitra, Varunmitra and Jal Urjamitra, the Minister said. Joshi added that the North East could play a significant role in India's grid stability under the 'One Nation, One Grid' initiative. He said that the proximity of the region to Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan provides opportunities for cross-border electricity trade. The minister said several Indian conglomerates have expressed interest in investing in renewable energy in the North East. He assured investors of government support, including single-window clearances, capital subsidies, and dedicated solar park development. 'The time to invest is now. Not just for returns, but for impact, for a cleaner tomorrow and a self-reliant India,' Joshi said.

Gujarat achieves 35.16 GW renewable energy capacity

Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], 22 May (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a nationwide target to achieve net zero by 2070, and Gujarat has made remarkable progress toward this goal by becoming the top state in India for renewable energy installation. As of April 30, 2025, Gujarat's total installed renewable energy capacity stands at 35.16 GW, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This milestone reflects the state's strong commitment to sustainability and green growth. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat ranks first in several RE segments: 1st in Total Installed Renewable Energy Capacity (35.16 GW); 1st in Installed Wind Power Capacity (13.51 GW); 2nd in Installed Solar Power Capacity (19.42 GW); 1st in Rooftop Solar Installation (5.31 GW); also, Gujarat contributes 15.72 per cent to India's total installed RE capacity. Gujarat's diverse RE mix includes wind, solar, small and large hydropower, and bioenergy. Of the total 35.16 GW capacity, 13,514.68 MW comes from wind, 19,421.8 MW from solar, 106.64 MW from small hydro, 1,990 MW from large hydro, and 129.85 MW from bio power sources. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) is playing a pivotal role in advancing energy storage solutions and promoting seamless integration of renewable energy into the grid. GUVNL has already secured agreements for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a cumulative capacity of 1,192 MW / 4,777 MWh. The state is also exploring Pumped Storage Projects with an estimated potential of over 32 GW. A key innovation under this strategy is the 35 MW Solar PV project with 57 MWh BESS at Kutch Lignite Thermal Power Station (KLTPS). This co-located project optimizes existing evacuation infrastructure and land availability to improve solar deployment and grid reliability--representing Gujarat's forward-looking approach to clean energy. During FY 2024-25, Gujarat generated nearly 32,790 million units (MU) of power through renewable sources--accounting for more than 22% of the state's total power consumption of 1,46,467 MU. This contribution underscores the state's accelerating clean energy transition and its impact on sustainable power availability. The state added over 5.9 GW of new RE capacity during the same period, increasing from 27.46 GW to 33.39 GW. This includes 4.95 GW from solar and 954.76 MW from wind, strengthening Gujarat's energy diversification. GUVNL's forward-thinking initiatives are also making renewable energy accessible and cost-effective for Gujarat's industrial hubs and GIDC estates--boosting industrial efficiency without compromising sustainability goals. With visionary leadership, stable policies, and strong infrastructure, Gujarat continues to lead the nation in building a clean, resilient, and future-ready energy ecosystem. With clear policy direction from Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and on-ground execution led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat has firmly established itself as the growth engine of India's renewable energy journey. By combining scale, innovation, and inclusivity, the state is not only powering its industries and communities but also contributing meaningfully to the nation's clean energy vision and the larger goal of Viksit Bharat. As Gujarat accelerates its clean energy transition, it continues to inspire other states to adopt bold, future-ready energy strategies. (ANI)
