14-year-old shot dead outside Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis is identified
The 14-year-old boy who was fatally shot outside the Federal Reserve Bank building in downtown Minneapolis this week has been identified as Thor William Wagaman Walsh. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's identified the boy Thursday, saying he died Monday at 9:21 p.m. at the Hennepin Healthcare ER after suffering multiple gunshot wounds at approximately 9:03 p.m. at 90 Hennepin Ave. in Minneapolis. According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, the shooting happened when a fight broke out around 9 p.m. among a group of about a dozen teenagers. No arrests have been announced as of Thursday afternoon. Police said the Walsh was known to local law enforcement and the shooting was not the first time he had been the victim of gun violence. "The tough part about this for any parent is, we don't know who our kids are hanging out with once they're outside of our home, and obviously we do have a problem with kids who have access to guns, so the best advice I can say to our parents is make sure you know who your kids are hanging out with," O'Hara said earlier this week. Data through May 6 on the Minneapolis Crime Dashboard shows there have been 16 homicides in Minneapolis so far this year, which is down from 21 at the same point in 2024. However, nine homicides have happened with in the past two weeks amid a surge in gun violence.

Minneapolis crime rate shows 'significant decrease' in early 2025
Crime in Minneapolis has shown a "significant decrease" in early 2025 in comparison to 2024, according to recent data shared by city officials. The city said the biggest drops in crime are robberies (down 47%), carjackings (40%) and homicide (40%). There have been seven homicides so far in Minneapolis this year, compared to 11 at the same point last year. Crime is also below the 3-year average in Minneapolis in all but two categories. Other crime decreases also include: 32% reduction in gunshot wound victims 24% reduction in auto thefts 18.1% reduction in shots fired calls 15.4% reduction in weapon law violations 11% reduction in aggravated assaults 9.5% reduction in burglaries 8.1% reduction in vandalism 8.1% reduction in stolen property 6.2% reduction in larceny and theft Crime has been steadily falling nationally following a spike that started with the COVID-19 pandemic, peaking in 2021. The updated stats were hailed by the office of Mayor Jacob Frey, who partially credited the drop to crime reduction and violence prevention initiatives implemented by Minneapolis Police Department, citing its Crime Pattern Response Protocol, Curfew Task Force, and Late-Night Safety Plan. City officials claim that since the Curfew Task Force was implemented in September to help reduce crime amongst youths, there has been a 66% reduction in offenders. "Thanks to the leadership of Chief O'Hara, Commissioner Barnette, and the dedicated officers of the MPD, we are seeing real progress in driving down crime. But the work isn't done, and we're not letting up – we will keep pushing forward to make Minneapolis the safest city it can be," Frey said.
