Luari Sharif shrine dispute echoes in Badin
A group of men, allegedly associated with one of the contested custodians of the Luari Sharif shrine in Badin district, reportedly assaulted journalists by attacking Badin Press Club on Monday. The club's president stated that armed men forcefully entered the club at a time when some people belonging to an opposing group of the custodians were addressing a press conference. The armed men wanted to stop the press conference. He said that the armed men climbed the club's walls to enter the place. He, however, felt relieved that the attackers could not get close to Mir Tariq Talpur and others who were speaking at the press conference. Talpur's group is said to be at loggerheads with Pir Muhammad Sadiq Qureshi's group. Memon lamented that though the police promptly reached the club on their complaint, they stood as spectators instead of trying to control the situation. Separately, a meeting of journalists at the club denounced the attack and demanded immediate action against the attackers by arresting them and charging them in an FIR under provisions of the Anti Terrorism Act. Though the incident's FIR could not be registered by the evening, police detained at least seven people who have been blamed for the assault.

Singapore-based Quadria's 3rd healthcare fund closes at US$1.1 billion, above US$800 million target
[SINGAPORE] Quadria Capital, a Singapore-based private equity (PE) firm, announced on Tuesday (May 27) the final close of its third healthcare fund at nearly US$1.1 billion. That is above the original target of US$800 million, said the healthcare-focused company, which manages more than US$4 billion across 27 investments in South and South-east Asia. Its investors – which include North American and European sovereign wealth funds and asset managers – may also commit another US$300 million during the investment phase of the third fund. This could bring the total committed capital to around US$1.3 billion when Quadria fully deploys the fund. The oversubscription comes even as PE firms continue to face challenges in raising capital, Quadria's co-founder and managing partner Abrar Mir told The Business Times. 'This has been one of the most difficult, complex fundraising environments that we've ever witnessed... even worse than the dotcom crisis and the global financial crisis of 2008-09.' According to a McKinsey report, PE fundraising in Asia-Pacific plunged almost 77 per cent to US$61 billion in 2024, from US$263 billion in 2021. That was driven mainly by American institutional investors – the world's largest PE investors – who pulled back from China amid growing bilateral tensions. Sign Up Sign Up Draw of a US$5 trillion market Still, institutional investors outside the US find Asia's US$5 trillion healthcare market appealing, Mir said. 'We're increasingly seeing institutional investors in Asia, who understand the opportunities of Asia becoming much more prominent going forward,' he added. Apart from drawing capital from several Asian sovereign investors, Quadria's fund also secured new commitments from Indian investors, spanning banks, insurers and family offices, he added. Middle-Eastern institutions, including those from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, invested into Quadria's fund for the first time as well. Boston Consulting Group forecasts that Asian healthcare is expected to drive 40 per cent of global healthcare growth by 2030. Often viewed as a defensive sector that can withstand the ups and downs of economic cycles, healthcare has been steadily drawing more private investments. According to a Bain report, global PE deal activity in the sector surged last year, to an estimated US$115 billion – the second-highest annual deal value on record. Bain added that PE firms continue to invest in healthcare in the Asia-Pacific, where deal values have been steadily rising since 2016. About 40 per cent of Quadria's fund has already been deployed, including in India's eyecare chain Maxivision and Asia's largest dialysis chain NephroPlus. Quadria expects to seal two new investments in South-east Asia soon. The company invests in two types of businesses – the first are those that either manufacture or provide a healthcare service to domestic markets, such as hospitals. The second is in businesses that produce healthcare products in Asia, and sell globally. Mir said that Quadria is also assessing deals in Asia and in the Gulf Cooperation Council region.

China Blocked India's Request For UN Sanctions On 5 Pakistan-Based Terrorists: Report
New Delhi: China has reportedly blocked India's proposal at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to ban five Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists and designate them as global terrorists. India's request to seek sanctions on The Resistance Front (TRF)-- the LeT offshoot involved in the 2025 Pahalgam attack-- has also hit the China wall at UNSC, according to a report by The Economic Times. The publication cited a dossier prepared by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) that pointed towards Beijing's involvement in blocking the sanctions on Abdul Rauf Asghar, Sajid Mir, Abdur Rehman Makki, Talha Saeed, Shahid Mehmood Rehmatullah, the five terrorists who have been involved in several terror attacks in India, including the 26/11 attacks, the 2019 Pulwama attacks, the 2016 Pathankot attack, the 2001 Parliament attack and the IC 814 hijack. Sanctions on Abdul Rauf Azha: Per the report, India and the US co-sponsored the first proposal to designate Rauf as a global terrorist on July 27, 2022. The proposal was put on hold by China for three months till May 10, 2023. It was finally blocked by China on May 10, 2023. Jaish commander Azhar was one of the brothers of JeM founder Masood Azhar and was the mastermind of the 1999 IC-814 hijacking from Kathmandu to Kandahar. He has also been instrumental in setting up training camps in Pakistan and coordinating terror attacks on Indian soil. Azhar was also the main conspirator of the 2001 Parliament attack and the 2016 Pathankot airbase strike. Indian probe agencies also found that he was involved in the 2019 Pulwama attack based on evidence from a co-conspirator's phone. Sanctions on Sajid Mir: The proposal to designate Mir as a global terrorist was blocked by China in 2023, according to the ET report. The NIA dossier noted that Mir is wanted for his role in the 26/11 attack. Interestingly, he was arrested in Lahore on terror-financing charges in May 2022 and was convicted within three weeks in a speedy trial. Mir has been designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) by the US on August 30, 2012. He is also on the FBI's most wanted list. Sanctions on Abdul Rehman Makki: China first blocked India's attempt to put Makki on the UN sanctions list in 2022. However, it lifted its hold in 2023, and Makki, the head of the LeT political affairs wing, was placed on the sanctioned lists. However, citing sources, the ET report said that Pakistan told the UN that Makki was dead, creating suspicion among security agencies. He is allegedly involved in raising funds for LeT. Sanctions on Talha Saeed: India and the US proposal against LeT leader Hafiz Saeed's son, Talha Saeed, has been blocked by China since 2022. Talha (50) is reportedly actively involved in recruitment, fund collection, planning and executing attacks by LeT in India and Indian interests in Afghanistan. Sanctions on Shahid Mehmood Rehmatullah: Rehmatullah is the deputy chief of the proscribed organisation Falah-i-lnsaniyat Foundation (FIF), a frontal organisation of LeT. The proposal against him has also been blocked by China since 2022. Per the ET report, Rehmatullah was involved in a conspiracy to create bases and sympathisers in India by sending funds in the garb of religious work, for anti-India activities. Proposal on TRF: India has made three submissions on TRF-- the first in December 2023, followed by a detailed one in May 2024 for the next report and then in December 2024 for the latest report filed in February 2025. China blocked all three proposals, the report said.

China blocking UN sanctions on THESE 5 Jaish and Lashkar terrorists, NIA ‘prepares dossier'
China has repeatedly blocked proposals at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that sought to ban Pakistan-based terrorists or designate them as global terrorists. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reportedly prepared a dossier, highlighting the active roles of these terrorists in several terror attacks in India. As per documents seen by The Economic Times, the dossier pointed to the role of China in blocking the sanctions of five known Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists involved in attacks in India. 1. Abdul Rauf Asghar: A leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad, Asghar is the key conspirator in the terrorist attack on the Parliament House, New Delhi, on 13 December 2001. He also played a key role in the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814. He is also dubbed the mastermind behind the 2016 Pathankot airbase strike. His role in the 2019 Pulwama attack was confirmed via evidence from a co-conspirator's phone, ET reported. The first proposal to designate Rauf was submitted by India and the US under co-sponsorship on 27 July 2022, which was put on hold by China. On 7 February 2023, China extended the hold by three months till 10 May 2023 and finally blocked the proposal on 10 May 2023, as per documents seen by ET. 2. Sajid Mir: He is a Pakistan-based top LeT Commander and was one of the main planners of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. The proposal to designate Mir before the UNSC was first mooted by India and the US in 2022 but was put on technical hold by China and finally blocked in 2023. As per the report, the NIA now has more evidence regarding Mir's involvement in the attack following the deportation of co-conspirator Tahawwur Hussain Rana from the US early this year. 3. Abdur Rehman Makki: He is the brother-in-law of Hafiz Saeed. He has been the head of the LeT political affairs wing. He also served as Head of LeT's foreign relations department. China had put a hold on the proposal in 2022 and lifted it in 2023, leading to Makki being placed in the sanctioned lists. However, official sources maintain that Pakistan has informed the UN that Makki has passed away, creating suspicion among security agencies. Makki is allegedly involved in raising funds for LeT. 4. Talha Saeed: The proposal by India and the US against LeT leader Hafiz Saeed's son, Talha Saeed and Shahid Mehmood, deputy chief of a front for the LeT named the Falah I Insaniyat Foundation (FIF), has been blocked by China since 2022. Talha (50) has been actively involved in recruitment, fund collection, planning and executing attacks by LeT in India and Indian interests in Afghanistan, ET reported. 5. Shahid Mehmood Rehmatullah: He is the Pakistan-based Deputy Chief of the proscribed Falah-i-lnsaniyat Foundation (FIF), a frontal organisation of the terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Shahid was reportedly involved in a conspiracy to create bases and sympathisers in India by sending funds in the garb of religious work, for anti-India activities. He is wanted by the NIA in the 2018 FIF terror funding case.
