Hyatt eyes Middle East growth as Q1 revenues increase

Hyatt has announced its Q1 2025 financial results, showcasing continued business strength and strong performance globally. The company is progressing towards its growth plans to triple its portfolio in Saudi Arabia within five years, supported by high-profile upcoming openings, brand debuts and a growing development pipeline. The company also continues to grow with intent across the Middle East and Africa, with new regional openings celebrated in the first quarter of 2025, including Andaz Doha in Qatar, Hyatt Place Nairobi Westlands and Hyatt House Nairobi Westlands in Kenya. Hyatt eyes MEA growth In Q1 2025, Hyatt reported a 5.7 per cent increase in comparable system-wide RevPAR, reflecting strong demand across global markets. Hyatt also announced that its global net rooms grew by 10.5 per cent, and Adjusted EBITDA reached $273m, a 24.4 per cent increase after adjusting for assets sold in 2024, demonstrating the strength of the company's asset-light business model. In Saudi Arabia, Hyatt is preparing for several openings that reflect its strong alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the rapid evolution of its tourism sector. Miraval The Red Sea, scheduled to open later this year, will mark the debut of the wellness brand in the region and the first of the brand's resorts outside of the US market. Set on Shura Island, the resort will feature 180 guestrooms and suites, offering immersive wellness programming tailored to each traveller. Additionally, Grand Hyatt The Red Sea, expected to open in 2026, will offer a premium beachfront resort experience and an array of facilities, including several distinctive restaurants and exceptional meeting and event spaces. With 430 rooms, the property is the largest resort on the island, and it will be the premier venue for large-scale conferences, exhibitions, and celebratory events. Within the rising cultural destination of Saudi Arabia, AlUla, Hyatt is set to open Hyatt Place AlUla in 2026. This 215-key property will offer guests and World of Hyatt members more travel choices to experience destinations that showcase rich heritage and unique landscapes. These high-impact developments form a key part of Hyatt's plan to expand its presence across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, meeting increasing demand for luxury, wellness, and lifestyle experiences while contributing to national tourism goals. Hyatt's commitment to enhancing its lifestyle and luxury portfolio in the GCC was reflected in the recent opening of Andaz Doha in Qatar. Opened in February 2025, Andaz Doha introduced Hyatt's lifestyle brand to the country. Located in the prestigious West Bay area, the hotel offers 256 guestrooms, including 32 suites and 4 Royal suites, as well as 56 residences for long-term stays. The property features distinctive dining concepts and design elements that pay homage to Qatari culture. Hyatt continues to lead with a development pipeline of approximately 138,000 rooms globally under executed management or franchise agreements. The company's first-quarter performance also included net income of $20m and the repurchase of approximately 1.1m shares of Class A common stock for $149m, reflecting its continued focus on delivering shareholder value.

Miraval Arizona Turns 30: Visit This Pioneering Wellness Resort

Miraval Arizona The wellness travel industry is booming, with a slew of new mindfulness-oriented hotels opening this year. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa isn't a newcomer but a pioneer in this space. For decades, it has seamlessly blended nature, luxury, and personal growth. Located just outside Tucson, this desert sanctuary invites guests to connect with the surrounding Sonoran landscape and with themselves. The property's enduring popularity is a testament to the notion that wellbeing is a way of life, not just a passing trend. This year's milestone birthday brings a fresh wave of celebrations making it an ideal moment to visit, whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time traveler curious to discover the Miraval ethos. 'Back when Miraval opened, the idea of traveling not just for relaxation, but for real personal growth, was almost unheard of,' says Mark Stebbings, General Manager of Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa. 'Over time, as awareness grew, the world began to better understand the critical role wellbeing plays in our lives.' A stay at Miraval is an opportunity to check out of the frenetic pace of everyday life and digital overload. Upon arrival guests place their phones in symbolic 'sleeping bags,' and are encouraged to unplug, except in designated areas. From sunrise to sunset, you can partake in a wide range of activities from introspective to adventurous. Whether you're learning about your tarot archetype, exploring past life regression, practicing archery, or engaging in equine therapy, the offerings are designed to teach you a new skill or help you rediscover yourself. Equine Therapy The 'Equine Experience' is a particularly renowned and sought-after program as it helps guests uncover emotional truths and deeper meaning with themselves in unexpected ways. One of the earliest programs like this, 'it really set the tone for Miraval's philosophy: that personal growth can happen in extraordinary and imaginative ways,' says Stebbings. Set against the rugged beauty of the Sonoran Desert, the resort provides a striking contrast between stillness and vitality. Chilly mornings invite scenic hikes, while sun-drenched afternoons are perfect for recharging by the pool. There's also a spa on-site to pamper yourself with massages, facials, and signature blowouts. And unlike some wellness resorts around the world which restrict caloric intake, caffeine and alcohol consumption, this isn't the case at Miraval. Enjoy Southwestern flavors (among other cuisines), their signature beef burger, and tasty cocktails during your stay. Miraval Arizona To commemorate its 30th anniversary there will be some special events to celebrate the big birthday. Highlights include an Authentic Circle Celebration, a special event recognizing longtime guests who have been part of Miraval's journey for decades. There will also new offerings like the Ultimate Wellbeing Package providing an immersive experience, blending mindfulness, movement, culinary arts, and spa therapies. Also, expect enhanced Signature Immersions like equine therapy and intuitive guidance alongside thought-leadership collaborations with NAMI and Elise Banks, will reinforce Miraval's commitment to mental health and resilience. Their anniversary isn't just a moment of reflection, it's the start for the next era of transformative wellness at Miraval. In 2007, an Oprah Winfrey endorsement brought Miraval to the world stage showcasing a place where people could grow, reconnect, and heal. Since then, interest in both the brand and the broader wellness movement has surged. Today, Miraval operates two additional U.S. locations, in Austin and the Berkshires, and is set to open its first international resort in Saudi Arabia later this year. With its 30th anniversary, there's no better time to dive into the Miraval experience for the first time or to return to a place that continues to evolve, while remaining deeply rooted in its mission of mindful, meaningful living.

'Anora' Continues Its Winning Streak by Sweeping Film Independent's Spirit Awards

At Film Independent's 40th annual Spirit Awards on Feb. 22, Anora continued its recent winning streak — taking home three of the big film awards, for Best Feature, Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison. "Indie film is struggling right now, more than ever," said Baker — who in his Best Director acceptance speech for his Brighton Beach, Brooklyn-set story about a sex worker who falls for a Russian oligarch, spoke about the state of the indie film industry. "I think for many of my peers, if we're lucky, the average number of years dedicated to making a film is around three. ... How do you support yourself with little or no income for three years?" He continued: "I personally do not have children, but I know for a fact that if I did, I would not be able to make the movies that I make." Baker declared himself an "indie film life." "And I know that there are other indie film lifers in this room," he said. "Those who don't see indie films as calling cards, those who don't make these films to land a series or a studio film. Some of us want to make personal films that are intended for theatrical release with subject matter that would never be greenlit by the big studios." His plea: "The system has to change because this is simply unsustainable. We are creating product that creates jobs and revenue for the entire industry; we shouldn't be barely getting by. Creatives that are involved in projects that span years have to begin getting much higher upfront fees. ... So let's demand what we're worth." Upon arrival at the beachside event in Santa Monica, guests mingled during a cocktail hour with stations offering Bulleit Frontier Whiskey drinks and Miraval rose. Then, they continued inside the tent for a healthy gourmet box lunch and a seated program hosted for the second year in a row by Aidy Bryant. This year included a moving tribute and (double) standing ovation for Josh Welsh, the longtime president of Film Independent who recently passed away after a five-year battle with cancer, but whose spirit and legacy remain, per the team. Among the other films honored, A Real Pain won Best Supporting Performance for Kieran Culkin and Best Screenplay for Jesse Eisenberg — who thanked producer Emma Stone. "I met Emma when we were in Zombieland together in 2009," he said, "and since then, I write little magazine articles and things on McSweeney's, and she's like the only person — I'm including my mom here — who would take little screenshots of it over the last 15 years, and send me things like, 'This is such a funny line.'' He went on, "And at the time, she was definitely — and still [is], the most famous person I know — and yet also the most dedicated to encouraging me as a writer. And I think about her not as my producer, but like a fairy godmother that I am like riding the coattails of her goodwill." Also on the film front, Maisy Stella won Best Breakthrough Performance for My Old Ass; Dìdi won Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay for Sean Wang; Flow won Best International Film; No Other Land won Best Documentary; Best Cinematography went to Jomo Fray for Nickel Boys; and Hansjörg Weissbrich won Best Editing for September 5. The 17th annual Robert Altman Award went to His Three Daughters director Azazel Jacobs, along with casting director Nicole Arbusto, and ensemble cast members Jovan Adepo, Jasmine Bracey, Carrie Coon, Jose Febus, Rudy Galvan, Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, Randy Ramos Jr. and Jay O. Sanders. Baby Reindeer swept the television category by winning three awards: Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series for Richard Gadd, Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series for Nava Mau and Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series for Jessica Gunning. Shōgun took home Best New Scripted Series; Hollywood Black won Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series; and How to Die Alone won Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series. "The show was about finding humor, and heart, and humanity, and life's messiness; and having it celebrated in this way really truly means everything," said creator and star Natasha Rothwell — who got emotional. ("I took a beta blocker so this wasn't supposed to happen!" she quipped.) "And for Black stories, this ability isn't a privilege, it is a necessity," continued Rothwell, who currently stars as spa manager Belinda Lindsey on The White Lotus. "We deserve to take up space, to be complex, to be hilarious and to be fully human. Although our time with this show was cut regrettably short, I know that I created something with you all that is so special ... beta blockers need more beta blocking!" She finished, "And for those of you who connected with the show and felt alone and you long to be seen, don't worry — this is just one of many stories that I have to tell for us." Then she spoke about another marginalized group: "And lastly, to the trans community that is under attack right now, know that you are not alone. I see you, we see you, we all see you, we stand with you." Read our story with Natasha Rothwell from the September 2024 issue of Los Angeles magazine here.

6 Middle Eastern hotel openings worth travelling for this year

Upcoming leisure MVPs of the GCC… From a safari-style camp in Sharjah to a hedonistic hotspot in Muscat and wellness resorts in Saudi Arabia… 3 of 12 AMAALA, Saudi Arabia: Six Senses Triple Bay Six Senses' otherworldly hotels are already lust-inducing resorts found regionally in Oman's secluded Zighy Bay and in the desert dunes of The Red Sea. And this year the brand's Middle Eastern footprint will further expand with the debut of Six Senses Triple Bay, one of six resorts on-track to welcome visitors to AMAALA, a wellnessdriven luxury destination on the Kingdom's Red Sea Coast. To the north, the village-like resort opens onto the sweeping beaches of Hajaz Cove, featuring a beach restaurant and family pool; to the south, natural rock pools and a mangrove boardwalk leads to the cove spa. At the centre is the dramatic Mesa, featuring spectacular overhangs and caves. A coffee roastery, bakery, water bar and shisha tea house fuse Six Senses' key pillars with regional influences, and guests are encouraged to immerse in the local, natural and sustainable throughout their stay. Dubai, UAE: Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab The final piece of the oceanic-inspired trilogy on the Jumeirah beachfront is Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab. Positioned as a new benchmark for luxury stays in Dubai, the dazzling beachfront resort is now accepting reservations from March 14. Those checking-in to the superyacht-inspired hotel can look forward to 10 categories of gorgeously contemporary guest rooms with sweeping vistas, stretches of golden sand lined with private cabanas, and a three-floor Talise spa, complete with a 20-metre lap pool and dedicated ladies-only floor. It's on the culinary front where this resort really stands out, though, with almost a dozen restaurant and bars to look forward to, like steakhouse The Cullinan, glamourous Mediterrasian restaurant KIRA, and an ultraluxe beach club called Kinugawa. Red Sea, Saudi Arabia: Miraval One of 11 resorts set to take shape on Shura Island, the main hub of The Red Sea gigaproject in Saudi Arabia, is a US-born wellness brand set to do things differently. Miraval Red Sea will be the brand's first resort outside of America, and promises to be an 180-room sanctuary that unrolls along three million square feet. The resort will draw inspiration from the natural beauty and topography of the destination: think crystalline waters, sugary sands, vast golden desert, and craggy mountain peaks. The star attraction will be the Life in Balance Spa, complete with 39 treatment rooms, walking trails and workshop spaces, promising to promote 'mindfulness, relaxation, and introspection'. Elsewhere, unique rituals and therapies enriched with Middle Eastern flair promise to put the property on the map as a soughtafter wellness retreat. It's slated to open in autumn. Doha, Qatar: Corinthia Gewan Island Well-versed in the creation of grand dame hotels thanks to their properties in London, Malta and Budapest, Corinthia will debut in the Middle East with the Corinthia Gewan Island this year. Poised to become a new architectural marvel on Doha's leisure scene, the 100-room Corinthia Gewan Island spans 13,000 square metres and also incorporates a yacht club, Championship golf course and a beach club, all of which are also part of the Corinthia portfolio. Promising sophistication and relaxation in equal measure, star attractions alongside the sumptuous guest rooms will be a pampering spa, three speciality restaurants, and a grand banquet hall with capacity for 1,000. Sharjah, UAE: LUX* Al Bridi One of two LUX* Resorts arriving in Sharjah this year, LUX* Al Bridi is your invitation to take a walk on the wild side. The 35-key resort adjacent to Sharjah Safari will feature one-, two- and threebedroom tented villas that gaze over the native wildlife. The aesthetic mirrors the tented lodges you'll find on your Pinterest board – think natural, earthy tones and endless sandstone shades, and the experiences to boot promise an immersion into the array of wildlife found in Al Dahid. Sun-soaked days can be spent dipping in your private pool, getting pampered at the LUXE ME Spa, or dining in the wild – that is when you're not on safari, keeping an eye out for creatures big and small that roam around. Muscat, Oman: Nikki Beach Resort Nikki Beach's roots might be in hedonistic beach clubs – and you'll still find those dotted around the globe – but its ever-expanding resorts are as much about wellness and meaningful travel experiences as they are celebrations of life. Which is why the blissful shores of Oman make total sense for a Nikki Beach Resort & Spa, set to land in late 2025 on the shores of Yiti Bay. The resort will feature 140 rooms and suites, plus 30 sumptuous private pool villas. It boasts everything you know and love about Nikki Beach and more: music, dining, fashion, art, entertainment, film, three swimming pools, beach club, a marina and yacht club. Guests can swim up to the wet bar at the pool, bliss out at the world-renowned beach club, indulge in the award-winning spa, and dine at three of the brand's signature restaurants. There's the farm-to-table bistro, Café Nikki; toes-in-the- sand restaurant Escape; and unique lobby bar, Soul Lounge.
