Liverpool could offer Florian Wirtz perfect shirt number thanks to Darwin Nunez
Liverpool are one of a number of clubs showing interest in signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, with the Reds able to offer one small sweetener in what's expected to be a tough transfer battle Persuading one of Europe's top players to join your team is always a challenge, no matter how prestigious your standing. However, Liverpool might have a cunning trick up their sleeve in their bid to lure Florian Wirtz to Anfield this summer. Fans were left buzzing with excitement at the news that Arne Slot has shifted his focus towards the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder. At just 22 years old, Wirtz is considered one of the best attacking talents in Europe, with a price tag exceeding £120million. While the newly crowned Premier League champions believe they can secure such a player, they are naturally bracing for fierce competition for his signature. However, while Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also hot on the trail of the German star, Liverpool have a small incentive that could tip the balance in their favour: Wirtz's former Leverkusen shirt number, 27. Thanks to Darwin Nunez, who chose to switch from the 27 to nine a year after joining Liverpool, the jersey is now available, and it's believed the number could hold some significance for Wirtz, reports the Liverpool Echo. A year after making his debut for Leverkusen's first team, Wirtz swapped his number 23 shirt for 27. He made the number his own for four seasons before eventually taking over as the German side's number 10. While Liverpool can't offer him the coveted number 10 shirt, currently worn by Alexis Mac Allister, they can provide Wirtz with a dose of nostalgia by offering him the shirt number that helped him make his name. Of course, any discussion about Wirtz choosing shirt numbers at Liverpool is premature. However, reports suggest that Liverpool are ready to battle it out with both City and Bayern for Wirtz's signature, with Anfield bosses reportedly contacting Wirtz's representatives to express their serious interest in the midfielder. If Liverpool can use the squad number as a bargaining chip, surely City and Munich can do the same? Currently, Matheus Nunes and Jack Grealish occupy the numbers 27 and 10 respectively at City. Meanwhile, in Bavaria, full-back Konrad Laimer and Leroy Sane hold these numbers, leaving Wirtz's old iconic number up for grabs at Liverpool. While a player of Wirtz's stature undoubtedly stirs excitement among fans, expectations should be managed. National media reports indicate that Wirtz was in the UK this week for a tour of City's facilities with his parents before returning to Germany. However, the Liverpool ECHO claims that Liverpool also expressed their interest in the 22-year-old and even met with his parents, Karin and father and agent, Hans. Despite this, the current expectation is that Wirtz will stay in Germany, either remaining with Leverkusen or making a move to Munich. Rasmus Hojlund breaks silence on nightmare season & hails returning Man Utd star
Manchester United No.9 Rasmus Hojlund endured a difficult season at Old Trafford, much like Ruben Amorim's side, but the 11-goal striker is looking forward and insists they will continue to improve Rasmus Hojlund believes he is finally starting to emerge from his Manchester United nightmare to prove he can be worth £72million. The 22-year-old Danish striker has never hidden behind excuses after scoring just 11 goals for Ruben Amorim's struggling team this season. But the smile was back on Old Trafford faces after he got on the scoresheet as United booked a Europa League date with Tottenham with a 7-1 aggregate hammering of Athletic Bilbao. However, Hojlund still admits it's been a disappointing campaign for the Reds. He said: 'We're very happy about being in the final, but it can't take away the focus from the entire season. Domestically it has not been good enough - but then again we play to win trophies and we are in a good position to win a European one. 'I think we've been improving in the last few weeks, even though the results in the Premier League have not been overly good, just in Europe. But in the Premier League we are gradually getting there - although we know we need to get better. 'Obviously there have been hard times for me. When you go without a goal for a lot of games - I wouldn't say I lost self-belief, but you're going to be a bit more down and a bit more frustrated. 'It's been about going back to basics and focusing on what I can do to try and improve myself. I will check myself, chat with my team-mates, get in better positions…these sorts of things. 'It is the hard times that make you better and you learn a lot from them. I have always said I know what this football club is all about and it's a lot of pressure, but that is why I'm here. I want to show myself on the biggest stage. 'We are focusing on the opportunity we have here. That can give us something from this year to take into the next season - because winning a trophy is always important for a club this size.' United now face West Ham at Old Trafford as they attempt to improve their poor Premier League position in the last three games of the season. Amorim has been boosted by the return to action of Amad Diallo, the young winger who has been sidelined for three months with an ankle injury. Amad produced a stunning cameo performance against Bilbao on Thursday night - and Hojlund said: 'Amad is wonderful. I obviously knew him a bit before I came here because we played at Atalanta. Not at the same time, but they talked of him. He's a great talent, what a player. 'He came through the Atalanta academy. He's a very good lad, very humble and down to earth. That's why he is where he is now. 'Last season he didn't really have a lot of game-time but now he has shown himself and he is so calm and focused on improving. We know his qualities and this season they have been shining through. Full credit to him.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Celebrity Traitors stars pictured at Inverness airport as they arrive ahead of filming
The much-anticipated filming of Celebrity Traitors has finally commenced as the star-studded cast touches down in Scotland. A host of celebrities have joined the popular BBC show, where they'll put their intuition to the test to identify the 'Traitors' among them. Several stars were spotted arriving at Inverness Airport, in pictures obtained by the Mirro r, including Jonathan Ross, Tom Daley, Charlotte Church, Stephen Fry, Alan Carr and David Olusoga, all gearing up for the start of filming this week. Other big names set to feature in the new series include Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway, rugby player Joe Marler, YouTuber Niko Omilana and actors Mark Bonnar of Line Of Duty and Shetland fame. Comedians Joe Wilkinson and Lucy Beaumont are also on board for the new series, alongside presenter Clare Balding, EastEnders actress Tameka Empson and actresses Celia Imrie and Ruth Codd. Claudia Winkleman is set to return as the host of the hit show, which debuted in the UK three years ago. The format also airs in the United States, albeit with a mix of celebrities and civilians, reports the Mirror . The seven celebrities spotted at the airport seemed in high spirits as they arrived in Scotland for filming. Each participant will be assigned either a 'Traitor' or 'Faithful' badge and must convince the others of their honesty - or their deceit. Production is already in full swing for the popular series, but the BBC has not yet announced when viewers can expect the new season to premiere. In the previous civilian series, audiences were gripped by a major plot twist with the introduction of The Seer's power, which allowed contestants to determine if their peers were Faithful or Traitors just before the finale, sparking intense gameplay and betrayal. The filming schedule for the BBC show is reportedly intense, with cast member Charlotte Chilton disclosing that they would often shoot for 17 hours a day. She confessed to spending prolonged periods with her fellow participants. "That's the hardest part. It sounds crazy - you might go 'you were only together for like 3 weeks or whatever'. But that 3 weeks, where some days like... 17 hours in a day and you're sat with those people constantly," she explained to The Mirror. She went on to say: "You talk about the weirdest things. You talk about really personal things. Lots of things that didn't make it into the episodes because they're so jam-packed and it really gives you an insight into people. "I would go as far to say I told these guys more than I've told some of my best friends because the trust you build over that time and because it's so immersive and you've got no contact with family or friends or anything, you suddenly rely on these people." The Celebrity Traitors will have to persuade their fellow entertainment and TV personalities that they are Faithful - but can they pull it off? With 20 stars participating in the brand new series, the first celebrity edition the UK has seen of the popular reality show, there's bound to be even more backstabbing and unexpected turns. So far, three series of The Traitors have aired, with the Faithfuls claiming victory in two out of three. Harry Clark bagged the entire prize money in the second series when he successfully convinced Faithful Mollie that he was one of them. In the most recent series, the Faithfuls triumphed again by managing to remove Charlotte from the group. However, winners Jake and Leanne also ousted two of their own Faithful comrades before the game concluded.

Justin Nickels and Jason Prigge react to Manitowoc mayor's race & more election takeaways
MANITOWOC – Justin Nickels will start his fifth term as Manitowoc's mayor April 22 during a swearing-in ceremony. More than 60% of Manitowoc voters chose Nickels over challenger Jason Prigge. Nickels has been mayor since 2009 and has championed a variety of changes to the downtown area, creating the River Point District and cleaning up vacant properties such as the former Mirro site on Washington Street and the former Mid-Cities Mall site on Memorial Drive. Nickels was not immediately available for comment Wednesday, but did send out a Facebook post thanking his supporters and Prigge, and reassuring those who didn't vote for him that he would not ignore their wants and perspectives. Nickels wrote: "From the bottom of my heart, thank you for entrusting me to serve another term as your mayor. I am excited to continue our great work. ... To those who didn't vote for me, I won't dismiss you. Please continue to reach out to me and help guide me in my decisions. It's all about Manitowoc now and everyone has a say." Prigge, a local entrepreneur and one of the minds behind Coolest Coast, a site that highlights the area's best features, shared a statement with the Herald Times Reporter. In that statement, he thanked his wife, family and supporters, and congratulated Nickels on winning the election. "This isn't the end of my commitment to Manitowoc," he wrote. "I will continue to serve and advocate for our city's progress. We have started conversations and sparked ideas that I know will grow." New and returning representatives for the Manitowoc Common Council will also be sworn in April 22. In District 1, Andrew Dunbar won with 51.3% of votes. He will replace Brett Vanderkin on the council. In District 2, Chad Beeman ran unopposed for another term. In District 3, Michael Cummings won with 54.5% of votes against challenger Angela Myers. In District 7, Bill Schlei filed noncandidacy and did not run for another term. As the only candidate in the race, Brian Anderson was voted in and will replace Schlei on the council. In District 10, Todd Reckelberg ran unopposed for another term. Three new representatives for the Manitowoc Board of Education will be added this month. Incumbents Matthew Phipps, Matthew Spaulding and Tony Vlastelica filed for noncandidacy and did not run for another term. Ann Holsen, David Bowman and Mary Lofy Blahnik were elected to replace them on the school board. According to the unofficial ballot tallies from Tuesday, Holsen received the most votes with 21.1%, Bowman received 20.4% and Blahnik received 18%. Conversely, challengers Lisa Anne Krueger received 15.1% of the votes, Brayden Myer received 12.9% and Chrystal Myer received 12.5%. A referendum from the Manitowoc Public School District asking for voters' approval to borrow $25 million for facility repairs and maintenance passed Tuesday with 75.8% of voters choosing yes while only 24.3% of voters chose no. In a news release from MPSD, Interim Superintendent Lee Thennes said the money will allow the district to focus on critical needs identified in a 2024 facilities audit. School board President Chris Able stated: "We thank everyone for their support and pledge to use this authority wisely to ensure safe and secure schools for all. The MPSD board will be active stewards of these funds. We will work rigorously to get the most value for every dollar, while ensuring we maintain not just our buildings but also a quality education for every student." Thennes has said that the borrowing will have no impact on taxpayers. According to an MPSD news release from March 26, administrators have identified more than enough in operational budget savings to pay for the annual borrowing debt payments. Voter turnout in Manitowoc County was high for the April 1 election with 51% of eligible voters casting ballots. In the 2024 spring election and presidential primary, only 27% of voters turned out. In 2021, the previous election for Manitowoc mayor, there was a 24% voter turnout. Alisa M. Schafer is a reporter for the Herald Times Reporter in Manitowoc.
