Karoline Leavitt says Shedeur Sanders 'facts speak for themselves' after Donald Trump post

has insinuated that the president had a hand in Shedeur Sanders finally being drafted.

send a firm message to the teams who had passed on him

Sanders'
fell down the board and into day three
- one of the biggest shocks in draft history after originally being slated as a first-round pick,

. In the fifth-round, the
Cleveland Browns
traded up with the
Seattle Seahawks
to select Sanders despite already drafting
Oregon
quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third-round.

Many had been furious by Sanders' fall in the draft, with the reason appearing to be that teams didn't believe him good enough to be a starter while not wanting a star figure as a back-up quarterback - taking attention away from the starter. Trump joined in the debate, furious with Sanders falling into day three and sent a message to the league that he needed to be drafted 'immediately'.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump bemoaned: "What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID? Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He's also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. He should be "picked" IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!".
Sanders would have to wait another day, but was eventually selected in the fifth-round, with a reporter asking Leavitt if Trump is taking credit. Leavitt smiled when replying: "All I will say is the president put out a statement and a few rounds later he was drafted... So I think the facts speak for themselves."

Trump is known to be a close friend of Shedeur's father, Pro Football Hall of Famer and current Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders... but whether he is close with any decision-makers at the Browns is unknown.
Cleveland drafting Sanders felt like a confusing situation at the time though, after already selecting a quarterback while their draft room did not look overly pleased after the pick was confirmed - fuelling rumors that ownership had a hand in the team making the pick rather than the general manager and head coach.
