Green Day fire back at Charli XCX's Coachella dig: ‘Actual headliner'
Green Day have hit back with a playful jab at Charli XCX after she wore an accessory suggesting she should be headlining Coachella 's Saturday lineup. Following her Weekend 1 performance at the Southern California desert music festival, the 32-year-old British pop star was pictured wearing a 'Miss Should Be Headliner' sash at her afterparty. Her stunt later went viral, with several fans interpreting it as a dig at the iconic rock band, who performed the festival's main stage immediately after her. The 'American Idiot' band has since responded to the 'Apple' singer's statement with a picture of their own, showing drummer Tré Cool wearing a sash made out of toilet paper with the words 'Actual Headliner' written across it. Charli took their retort in her stride, replying, 'Obsessed' to the photo on X. Green Day had already referenced Charli XCX's jab during their performance earlier that evening when frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was seen sporting a neon green 'Brat' hat in support of the pop star's chart-topping studio album. Charli XCX included the photo of Armstrong sporting the hat in her Instagram recap post of the weekend's events. Coachella, which concluded its 2025 edition over Easter weekend, also saw Lady Gaga and Post Malone headline Friday and Sunday, respectively. The former was praised by fans for her deft handling of a tricky microphone malfunction during the opening minutes of her second headlining set. As she began singing her latest hit single, 'Abracadabra,' Gaga's head mic started to glitch and kept cutting off throughout the track. The 'Poker Face' hitmaker, however, appeared unperturbed by the issue, continuing to sing and execute her tricky choreography while suspended on top of a towering dress-like structure. Other major artists on the Coachella 2025 lineup included Missy Elliott, Benson Boone, White Lotus star and BLACKPINK member LISA, Megan Thee Stallion, Zedd and Shaboozey. Meanwhile, Weekend 2 festivalgoers were treated to a performance by Ed Sheeran, who stepped in as a last-minute replacement for FKA twigs on the Saturday lineup. Her Weekend 1 slot was taken over by the rock band Weezer. 'Not me doing my first Coachella & gagging & throwing up all the way through the set,' the 'Messy' singer said of the incident on TikTok. 'I was nervous guys and it was 40 bloody degrees.'

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong Rocks ‘Brat' Hat at Coachella 2025 Amid Charli XCX Mini-Feud
Green Day and Charli XCX are playfully beefing at Coachella 2025. During the music festival's opening weekend in Indio, Calif., the pop star was spotted at an afterparty wearing a sash that read 'Miss Should Be Headliner' — a cheeky statement many on social media interpreted as a jab at the veteran rock band, who headlined the main stage just before her set on Saturday (April 12). On Saturday (April 19), during the trio's closing set on weekend two of the festival, Armstrong stepped onto the stage wearing a neon green baseball cap emblazoned with the word 'Brat,' a clear nod to the British singer-songwriter's 2024 studio album of the same name. To further play along, Green Day drummer Tré Cool was also spotted backstage rocking a handmade white sash that read 'Actual Headliner' while flashing a smirk as he held his hands up. On Sunday, Charli reacted to the moment on X: 'obsessed,' she commented on the photo. Despite the playful nature of the situation, Green Day's fanbase quickly took offense to Charli's 'Miss Should Be Headliner' jab and rallied to defend the punk icons on social media. During Coachella's opening weekend, Armstrong altered the lyrics to 'Jesus of Suburbia' to reference the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. 'Runnin' away from pain like the kids from Palestine/ Tales from another broken home,' he sang, swapping out the original line, 'Runnin' away from pain when you've been victimized.' 'green day making a political statement about s— that actually matters > pop girlies singing about coke,' one fan wrote on X. Another user added, 'Charli xcx letting hype get to her head. Green Day used their Coachella headliner slot to speak up for good. They are still bigger than her.' During Green Day's weekend two set, Armstrong again altered the lyrics to 'Jesus of Suburbia,' this time taking aim at the vice president. 'Am I (stupid) or am I just overjoyed?' became 'Am I (stupid) or am I just J.D. Vance?' as he sang it to the crowd. Weekend two of Coachella wraps up Sunday (April 20) with performances by Post Malone, Travis Scott, Megan Thee Stallion, JENNIE, Zedd, Kraftwerk, and more. Fans react to Charli XCX's possible Green Day shade at Coachella afterparty
Charli XCX stirred up controversy after she was seen wearing a 'Miss Should Be Headliner' sash at a Coachella afterparty on Saturday night. The 32-year-old singer, who had earlier performed her Brat set on the Coachella stage at 7:15 PM, kept the celebrations going, but her bold accessory quickly became the center of attention. While Charli, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, rocked the mainstage, legendary rock band Green Day, winners of 96 awards and nominees for 218, held the headlining spot. As Charli partied behind the DJ booth in a white dress, the sash sparked speculation that she was throwing shade at the festival's decision. A playful photo of her sticking her tongue out while flaunting the sash only fueled the conversation online. Fans flooded X (formerly known as Twitter) with reactions, many criticizing the pop star's move: 'one 'summer' album and these girls are acting like they're bigger than everyone else," one wrote. Others chimed in with comments like, 'No, she sucked last night. It was the same s**t she's been doing on her tour,' and 'A two hit wonder is not worthy of headlining.' Some pointed out Green Day's status, saying, 'To the main public she's not bigger than Green Day' and 'No one listens to that 2024 album anymore, next.' Other reactions included, 'She only had one viral album be so fr rn,' 'I still don't know who that is. Is she popular?' and 'one mediocre album had her acting up like this????' Charli's career achievements are nothing to dismiss, though — she has racked up 172 award nominations and 47 wins. Her Brat album, released in 2024, brought her a surge in popularity, especially after her single Guess earned her a UK No.1 for the first time in over ten years. Still, Green Day's legacy in the music world remains towering. According to the Official Charts website, they've secured five UK No.1 albums, 10 Top 10s, 17 Top 40s, and have spent nearly 500 weeks on the Top 75 charts. During her Coachella set, Charli shared the stage with some major guests. Billie joined her for the live debut of their Guess remix, while Lorde made a surprise appearance for Girl, So Confusing and Talk Talk. Following her performance with Lorde — who recently teased new solo music for the first time since 2021 — Charli hyped fans up by announcing, 'Lorde summer 2025!' The audience included Hollywood stars like Timothée Chalamet and viral sensations like model Alex Consani, who took part in the popular "Apple dance" moment. As her set wrapped up, Charli left fans buzzing by projecting a cryptic message behind her: 'Does this mean that Brat Summer is finally over????? idk?' But fans can rest easy — Brat Summer is far from finished, with Charli scheduled to hit Glastonbury, LIDO Festival, and Parklife later this year.

Charli XCX draws criticism from Green Day fans after wearing 'Miss Should Be Headliner' sash at Coachella afterparty
Charli XCX has come under criticism from Green Day fans after she appeared at a Coachella 2025 afterparty wearing a sash reading 'Miss Should Be Headliner". The moment, which circulated widely on social media, followed her Main Stage performance on Saturday, 12 April, where she was joined by artists including Troye Sivan, Billie Eilish, and Lorde. Charli's set was held before Green Day's headline slot. Shortly after, images of the sash prompted debate across social platforms, with some fans calling the gesture disrespectful in light of Green Day's politically charged performance. During their set, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong altered lyrics in 'Jesus of Suburbia' to reference the Palestinian genocide, drawing attention to current global issues. Critics of Charli XCX argued that the timing and nature of the sash clashed with the message Green Day brought to their set. One fan wrote, 'Artists are supposed to stand for something, not be petty losers,' while another added, 'Even if you think she should've headlined, wearing that sash was unnecessary.' Green Day has a history of adjusting lyrics to reflect current events. In past performances, they have referenced political figures and global conflicts, with recent adaptations including commentary on the MAGA movement and support for Palestine. Charli XCX, who performed several songs from her remix album 'Brat and it's completely different but also still brat', received praise for her set but also faced questions about perceived competitiveness. While some fans supported her expression of confidence, others viewed the move as a slight against an established act with decades in the industry.
