Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence (MND) on Sunday detected 16 sorties of People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, six People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels and two official ships near its territory. Of the 16 aircraft, 13 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered the island's northern, southwestern, and eastern air defence identification zones (ADIZ). Sharing a post on X, MND wrote, "16 PLA aircraft, 6 PLAN vessels and 2 official ships operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 13 out of 16 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern, southwestern and eastern ADIZ. We have monitored the situation and responded." Earlier on Saturday, MND detected 16 sorties of People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, six People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels, and two official ships around the island. 13 out of the 16 aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line and entered the island's northern, southwestern, and eastern (ADIZ). Live Events "16 PLA aircraft, 6 PLAN vessels and 2 official ships operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 13 out of 16 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern, southwestern and eastern ADIZ. We have monitored the situation and responded," MND stated on X. Meanwhile, on Friday, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te visited the Taiwanese Army Engineer Training Centre and the Navy Anti-Submarine Aviation Command in Kaohsiung and expressed gratitude to the service members for their steadfast dedication to guarding the frontlines day and night. Taiwan, to bolster air defence preparedness, conducted the live-fire debut of Land Sword II. As per the MND, Land Sword II can counter varied aerial threats, thereby significantly enhancing the force's protection. The visuals shared by the MND show the live firing of the Missile System could be seen, with videos showcasing its launch. "Land Sword II makes its live-fire debut. This SAM system is capable of countering diverse aerial threats and significantly enhances force protection for #ROCArmy," MND wrote on X on Tuesday.

BrahMos proof of continuity in governance which cannot be denied: Jairam Ramesh

With focus on India's defence arsenal, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday (May 12, 2025) said the BrahMos missile is a remarkable proof of continuity in governance which simply cannot be denied or erased, "despite it being the regular habit of today's ruling establishment". Mr. Ramesh said the BrahMos missile was inducted into the Indian Navy in 2005 and Indian Army in 2007, while the air-launched variant of BrahMos appeared in 2012, all during Manmohan Singh's tenure. "It was his leadership that led to the historic Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement of 2005, paving the way for India finally joining the Missile Technology Control Regime eleven years later. It was also during his tenure that the BrahMos Integration Complex in Hyderabad and the Brahmos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited were established," the Congress general secretary said on X. "BrahMos is very much in the news these days. It is named after the Brahmaputra and the Moskva rivers and is an outstanding example of Indo-Russian collaboration. It is also yet another remarkable proof of continuity in governance which simply cannot be denied or erased - despite it being the regular habit of today's ruling establishment in New Delhi," he said, taking a swipe at the Modi government. Noting that India's Integrated Missile Development Programme began in 1983, Mr. Ramesh said it has had great successes. Sometime in the mid-90s, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and his colleagues like Dr. Sivathanu Pillai felt the need for collaboration with the Russians for supersonic cruise missiles, he said. "An inter-governmental agreement was signed on February 12, 1998 when IK Gujral was PM. Incidentally he was India's Ambassador to the USSR 1976-80. Thereafter the first contract was signed on July 9, 1999, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was PM. The first successful launch took place on June 12, 2001," he said. The BrahMos headquarters complex that includes design, simulation and aerospace knowledge facilities was inaugurated in New Delhi on December 4, 2004 by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ramesh said. "Thereafter the missile was inducted into the Indian Navy in 2005 and Indian Army in 2007. The air-launched variant of BrahMos appeared in 2012. All this was when Dr. Manmohan Singh was PM," he said. His remarks come days after India and Pakistan reached an understanding to stop all firings and military actions on land, air and sea with immediate effect after four days of cross-border strikes that triggered fears of a wider conflict.

Russian President Putin proposes ‘direct talks' with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a 'direct talks' with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul after over three years of war and said that the talks should be able aimed at achieving a durable peace and eliminate the root cause of the war. During an interaction with reporters in the Kremlin on Sunday, Putin 'proposed' to restart peace talks between Ukraine and Russia which was last held in 2022 when in February, the Russian forces had invaded Ukraine which triggered a gravest confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cuban Missile crisis of 1962. The development comes at a time when four major European countries, UK, France, Germany and Poland have ratchet up pressure on Russia to accept a 30-day ceasefire proposal with Ukraine and the leaders of the four countries said that their proposal was backed by US President Donald Trump, whom they had briefed over the phone earlier in the day. Joint Statement by the Leaders of France, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine Following the Meeting in Kyiv. On Saturday, May 10, 2025, the leaders of France, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom and Ukraine met in Kyiv. They agreed that starting Monday, May 12,… — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) May 10, 2025 Putin said that he has proposed a direct talk with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul in an attempt to 'eliminate the root causes of the conflict' and 'to achieve the restoration of a long-term, lasting peace.' Referring to failed talks with Ukraine just after its invasion in 2022, Putin said 'It was not Russia that broke off negotiations in 2022. It was Kyiv. Nevertheless, we are proposing that Kyiv resume direct negotiations without any preconditions.' Putin didn't mention about the 30-day proposal brought up by the four European countries and supported by the US, even as Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Saturday told CNN that Moscow will need to consider it. Putin added 'Our proposal, as they say, is on the table, the decision is now up to the Ukrainian authorities and their curators, who are guided, it seems, by their personal political ambitions, and not by the interests of their peoples,' Reuters reported.

Air defence system in Lahore ‘neutralised' by Indian Armed Forces: What does this mean?

The government on May 8 announced that the Indian Armed Forces had 'neutralised' an air defence system of Lahore. 'Today morning, Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised,' the Press Information Bureau (PIB) said in a Ministry of Defence release. India's action was in response to Pakistan's activities earlier in the day. The press release said that late on the night of May 7, 'Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India… These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks.' The situation is rapidly developing, with the government sharing information at regular intervals. What does it mean that an air defence system at Lahore has been neutralised? What is an 'air defence system' generally, and how does it work? An air defence system is a series of mechanisms working in tandem to protect against enemy air strikes. The most commonly known element of an air defence system is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) or a Ground-to-Air Missile (GTAM), which is basically a missile launched from the ground to intercept an enemy missile or aircraft. But SAM is just one component of an elaborate system. How layered the system is depends on the military capabilities of a country. The main functions of an air defence system are identifying, tracking, and then engaging the enemy missile. Thus, radars, jammers, and air sirens are all parts of an air defence system. A radar transmits radio waves, which hit an object and come back to the radar, thus telling the radar about the incoming object. Once a missile or aircraft has been identified, the human personnel present decide how to deal with it. This involves judging how big the incoming threat is, and which weapon system should be deployed to deal with it, where the SAM are commonly used. A SAM can have various strike ranges. It can be launched to either hit and take down the enemy aircraft, or the ammunition the aircraft is dropping. The missile intercepts the missile or bomb or drone being dropped and makes sure it goes off in the air, before it can hit its intended target. Often, this interception happens so high up in the air that even the debris of the incoming ammunition evaporates before it can touch the ground. Here, it is also important to understand the difference between a missile and a bomb — a missile has its own engine and follows a guided or partially guided projectile trajectory, while a bomb depends on gravity to fall down and hit its target. Destroying a city's air defence systems is usually done as a preparation to bombing the city, or select locations within the city. Is there anything else? What has just been described generally falls under Active Defensive Counter Air operations. NATO in a research paper mentions two other mechanisms. Passive Defensive Counter Air (P-DCA) Passive Defensive Counter Air measures are used to minimise the effects enemy raids might have. 'Key facilities are hardened and protected, and may be duplicated or otherwise backed up by use of redundancy. Camouflage, Concealment and Deception may be used to prevent direct attacks on likely targets, supported by an effective civil defence organisation to provide fire-fighting, medical, rescue and recovery services,' the research paper says. Offensive Counter Air (OCA) Then is Offensive Counter Air, which basically means compromising the enemy's strike capability 'through direct action', the paper says. Pakistan's air defence systems have weapons bought from Turkey and China in recent times (as the bigger powers would either not sell to it or were too expensive for it) along with some older weapon systems from the US and some Soviet-era weapons.
