The Blue Origin Crew Was in Space Long Enough for Katy Perry to Sing This Song

The star-studded crew of Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket launched into space at 9:30 a.m. ET on Monday morning—and they touched back down in Texas just 10 minutes and 21 seconds later. Mission NS-31, which was the first all-female spaceflight crew since 1963, carried six notable passengers for the historic takeoff: pop star Katy Perry, broadcast journalist Gayle King, activist Amanda Nguyen, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and journalist Lauren Sánchez. The rocket, which is fully autonomous and requires no pilots to launch, was propelled 62 miles into the atmosphere, reaching just past the Kármán line, or the boundary that defines the edge of Earth's atmosphere from outer space. Ahead of today's flight, Perry revealed her outer space ambitions in an Instagram video. 'I think I'm gonna sing. I'm gonna sing a little bit,' she said. 'I gotta sing in space.' Upon returning to Earth, King confirmed in an interview with CBS Morning that Perry did just that. 'The best part was, when we got back in our seats after Zero-G's, Katy sang, 'What a Wonderful World,'' King said, referring to Louis Armstrong's classic 1967 song. 'Cause we had been asking her to sing all the time, and she wouldn't. Everybody said, Sing 'Roar.' Sing 'Firework.' And she said, It's not about me, I wanted to talk about the world. Isn't that nice?' Perry later reflected on the moment in another post-flight interview. 'I've covered that song in the past. Obviously my higher self is steering the ship. I had no clue I'd one day decide to sing a little bit of that in space,' she said. 'It's not about me. It's not about singing my songs. It's about a collective energy and making space for future women. It's about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.' Katy Perry's Space Capsule Will Feature 'Dentist-Style Chairs' and Mood Lighting

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." The historic Blue Origin flight launches into space on April 14, featuring an all-female crew consisting of Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn. While singer Perry and journalist Sánchez are committed to getting glam for their expedition, the ship itself has some major style points. The star-studded crew is embarking on Mission NS-31 aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard capsule. The capsule's design was led by Seattle-based design consultancy Teague, the same firm responsible for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. As reported by GeekWire, the aesthetic of the New Shepard capsule is on par with aircraft like the Dreamliner. The capsule cabin is "about the size and shape of a big igloo," according to GeekWire, with enough room for six passengers. Crew members sit in dentist-style chairs that can be customized with extra padding to accommodate different body types. Each chair is conveniently located by a 4-foot window for unparalleled space views, while a display screen "about the size of an Amazon Kindle Fire tablet" is mounted on the window's edge, displaying flight data views from external cameras. Cool blue mood lighting sets the tone for an out-of-this-world trip, which may provide potential benefits such as increased alertness and stress-reducing properties. During the 11-minute spaceflight, the famous passengers will feel three Gs of acceleration on the way up and around four minutes of zero-G at the top, which allows for free floating. The ship was designed with cushioned walls, adding extra comfort and protection, preventing any injury during fluctuations in weightlessness. In the days before the launch, Perry, Sánchez, King, Bowe, Nguyen, and Flynn will attend final training sessions at the Van Horn, Texas launch site. Though we'll be staying on solid ground, we can't wait for takeoff. Follow on Instagram and TikTok.
