MDOT launches new bicycle safety guide
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – May is designated as 'Bicycle Safety Month,' and the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is celebrating by launching the new Mississippi Bicycling Guide. This updated guide from MDOT's Bicycle & Pedestrian Program features bicycle safety tips, state bike laws and a list of major bike trails in Mississippi. Here are some bicycle safety tips: Before you leave, check your bike for proper fit, maintenance and tire pressure. Wear bright clothing or utilize reflective gear. Make sure you are seen. Always wear a helmet; it could save your life. Obey all traffic laws. Ride in the same direction as traffic, use hand signals when turning and follow all traffic signs and signals. When in doubt, ride single file. If you are behind the wheel of a car, follow these tips to keep cyclists, other motorists and yourself safe: Before you leave, adjust your mirrors and know your blind spots. Bicycles are smaller than vehicles and can easily blend in with traffic. Check twice for bikes. Always leave extra space between your vehicle and cyclists. State law requires at least three feet between a vehicle and a cyclist. Pay attention and drive defensively. While you can't control how others drive, you can anticipate traffic changes, allowing you to respond at a moment's notice. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Forrest County starts $1 million sidewalk project for recreation
FORREST COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – A major sidewalk project is underway in Forrest County, aimed at encouraging exercise and getting people outside. The nearly $1 million project will take place on Classic Drive from Pine Tree Drive to Golf Course Road, and eventually to Highway 49. A Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) grant is covering 80% of the cost. The county is paying the rest. The sidewalk will give people a safe place for walking, exercising and other outdoor activities. 'We want everyone to be healthy, and this is a way to encourage that by being able to be active in your own community. So, I feel like it's going to be really important that we all stay engaged with exercise, and this is one way to do that,' said Terri Bell, president of the Forrest County Board of Supervisors. Hattiesburg's Tony Vance to lead Parade of Champions The design also accommodates golf carts. The Hattiesburg Country Club said the sidewalk will make it easier and faster for members using carts. 'A lot of them will get together and use a sidewalk to connect to the Longleaf Trace and take the Longleaf Trace down to USM to go to the football game or the baseball game or the basketball game. Some of them even use it to go to restaurants at night just to avoid having to get on city roads,' said Carter Callaway, co-owner of the Hattiesburg Country Club. Local leaders said the project will help boost small businesses by increasing foot traffic. 'This is going to increase their business traffic, so that people will be able to come and enjoy the sidewalk and be able to enjoy all of those particular activities that are along that way to the Longleaf Trace,' said Bell. Supervisors expect to finish Phase 1 in about three months. Phase 2, which extends to Highway 39, could take a few more years. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
