Marsh back to lead Australia in West Indies T20s
Mitchell Marsh will captain Australia on his return to the Twenty20 squad named yesterday for a fivematch series in the West Indies, while explosive batsman Mitchell Owen earned a first call-up. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is back, having been rested for Australia's last T20 series against Pakistan in November, and left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann makes the squad for the first time. Marsh missed the Pakistan series and has recovered from a lower back injury that kept him out of the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Australia's Test and 50-over captain Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Mitchell Starc were left out of the 16-man squad for the series next month. They will return to Australia following three Tests against the West Indies beginning on June 25.

Marsh returns to lead Australia against West Indies
Mitchell Marsh showed promising form with the bat in the IPL, where he amassed 627 runs in 13 innings. Photo: AFP/file Cricket Australia (CA) on Wednesday announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies, set to begin next month. Uncapped players Mitchell Owen and Matt Kuhnemann have received their first international call-ups. Notably, promising young batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has been left out of the squad. Despite featuring in seven of Australia's last eight T20Is, Fraser-McGurk has managed just one half-century and failed to cross 20 runs in each of his other six innings. Xavier Bartlett and Marcus Stoinis have also been omitted. Mitchell Owen earned his spot after a stellar Big Bash League (BBL) season, where he finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 452 runs in 11 matches at an average of 45.20 and a remarkable strike-rate of 203.6. His explosive 108 off 42 balls in the final led the Hobart Hurricanes to the title and earned him the Player of the Match award. Mitchell Marsh will captain the side following a prolific IPL season, where he amassed 627 runs in 13 innings for the Lucknow Super Giants, including his maiden century in the tournament. Veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who recently retired from ODI cricket, retains his place in the T20 squad. Tim David also returns after missing the latter part of the IPL season with champions Royal Challengers Bangalore. Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly make their comebacks following brief injury layoffs, while Josh Hazlewood is back after being rested for the recent T20I series against Pakistan. Australia have opted to rest key players Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc for the T20Is, with the series beginning in Jamaica on July 19immediately after the conclusion of the three-match Test series. Chair of Selectors George Bailey emphasised the importance of squad depth and experimentation ahead of the T20 World Cup. "We have a busy T20 schedule coming up through this series, followed by three against South Africa and New Zealand and five matches against India at home as we continue to refine and build a squad we think will be the right fit for the World Cup on the subcontinent," Chair of Selectors George Bailey said. "There are a number of players outside the squad who can still force their way into the mix for those upcoming Indian Series and through the Big Bash. "The connection, role development and combinations we will have as options are growing nicely as we build towards the World Cup. It's an exciting time in our T20 space," he added. Australia T20I squad: Mitchell Marsh (C), Sean Abbott, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa.

Emerging Star Mitchell Owen Signs With Washington In Major League Cricket
Underlining his demand in T20 franchise cricket, emerging Australian allrounder Mitchell Owen will add Major League Cricket to his growing list after signing with defending champions Washington Freedom. The 23-year-old Owen will be a boost for Freedom, whose title defence won't include South Africa star quick Marco Jansen and dynamic Australia batter Travis Head due to Test commitments. 'Mitch Owen was selected because of his versatility. He can play in pressure situations, making an unbelievable hundred in the BBL final,' Freedom general manager Michael Klinger told me. 'He provides a style of batting that is quite similar to Travis Head, a right-handed version. We felt he's a real good replacement. He's at the start of a career that's about to flourish. 'He could potentially be a long-term player for Washington Freedom. Someone we look to have a great relationship with going forward.' Veteran left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff, who has played 12 ODIs and 17 T20Is for Australia, has also signed with Freedom. 'When we lost Jansen, we were looking for a new-ball type bowler to replace him. We felt that he's (Behrendorff) a real good replacement,' Klinger said. 'He comes in fresh, not playing in the IPL. It is a bonus having a few international players in your squad coming in fresh.' An expanded 34-game third edition of MLC will run from June 12-July 13. Owen burst into prominence during the recent Big Bash League season in Australia, where he finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer capped by an extraordinary 108 from 42 balls to win the player-of-the-final award in Hobart Hurricanes' triumph. Owen has subsequently played in T20 leagues in South Africa and Pakistan before signing with Punjab Kings as an injury replacement for compatriot Glenn Maxwell. It is his first stint in the Indian Premier League, cricket's richest T20 league which has resumed after a weeklong suspension in the wake of India-Pakistan cross-border tensions. Before his rapid rise, Owen's only experience on the overseas franchise circuit was playing in last year's T10 tournament in the Cayman Islands. The 6 foot 5 Owen is an intimidator at the crease with his long levers and brute strength able to clear the boundary with ease. He is also a dangerous seam bowler capable of hitting speeds over 80 mph and his towering height conjures awkward bounce. Owen's progress has been closely monitored by Australian great Ricky Ponting, the Freedom head coach. Ponting is also currently coaching Owen in the IPL and is Hurricanes' head of strategy in the BBL. 'Ricky is a big fan. As head coach (of Freedom), he was keen to get him (Owen) involved,' Klinger said. Owen is a player of considerable interest for Australia's hierarchy ahead of next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. He could be in the mix for white-ball series against West Indies and South Africa in the aftermath of MLC. The Freedom open the MLC season against San Francisco Unicorns at the Oakland Coliseum on June 12 in a rematch of last year's final. The iconic Coliseum, the former home of the NFL's Raiders and MLB's Athletics, will host nine matches from June 12-18 before the tournament shifts to Dallas and Broward County in Florida.

Mitchell Owen: Meet the big-hitting Aussie who fell for a duck on his IPL debut
Australia's Mitchell Owen made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut on Sunday, playing for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) against the Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, the 23-year-old all-rounder had a tough start to his IPL journey, dismissed for a two-ball duck by young left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka. Owen was brought in as a replacement for star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who was ruled out of the remainder of the 2025 season due to injury. Mitchell Owen is a promising 23-year-old all-rounder from Tasmania, Australia. He rose to prominence earlier this year in the Big Bash League (BBL), where he represented the Hobart Hurricanes. Owen made headlines by smashing the fastest century in BBL history—reaching the milestone in just 39 balls. He went on to score a blistering 108 off 42 deliveries in the final against Sydney Thunder, leading his team to the title. He finished the tournament as the top run-scorer with 452 runs in 11 innings. Before the IPL, Owen played three matches for the Paarl Royals in the SA20 2025. He also represented Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The team was under pressure at 34/1 when Owen came to the crease. Facing Maphaka, Owen attempted an aggressive shot off a back-of-length delivery but ended up skying a top edge. RR captain Sanju Samson made no mistake, taking a comfortable catch to send the debutant back to the pavilion. With his dismissal, Owen became the fourth Australian player to register a duck on IPL debut. The others on this list include Ben Laughlin, Ashton Turner, and Jhye Richardson.
