Taiwan's Foxtron to develop BEV for Mitsubishi
Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced this week that it has signed a preliminary agreement to source a battery electric vehicle (BEV) model from Foxtron Vehicle Technologies Company, the automotive subsidiary of Taiwanese electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Company Ltd, starting next year. The deal represents a major step forward for Hon Hai, Apple's main iPhone manufacturing sub-contractor, in its aim to become a major global BEV contract assembler. In 2020, the company unveiled its MIH (Mobility in Harmony) in-house BEV platform, designed to provide global automakers with a fast, low-cost entry strategy into the BEV segment - backed by a ready-made supply chain. Under the memorandum of understanding (MOU), Foxtron has agreed to develop a new BEV model based on its MIH open platform, which Mitsubishi will sell locally and export to markets in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand, from the second half of 2026. The vehicle will have 'excellent driving performance' and feature an advanced infotainment system, according to the automaker. Production of the new model will be carried out by Yulon Motor Company Ltd, Nissan Motor's Taiwanese vehicle production partner, with Foxtron providing 'manufacturing management services.' Mitsubishi and Foxtron have now decided to proceed with further discussions to finalize the deal. Mitsubishi said it is exploring additional opportunities to expand its collaboration with its Alliance partners, which include Nissan and Renault, to strengthen its electrified vehicle lineup in key regional markets. Aussie drivers are set to be the guinea pigs for a groundbreaking new electric vehicle from the makers of the iPhone. Japanese car giant Mitsubishi has announced it will partner with Taiwanese electronics maker Foxtron to co-develop a new EV aimed at countering China's emerging dominance of the small SUV market. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will work with Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, the EV division of iPhone maker Foxconn and Taiwanese car manufacturer Yulon to bring the new electric car offering to market. The first car launched or 'revised' as part of that plan was the 2025 Outlander, an updated version of the mid-size SUV that was first sold in Australia in 2023. Mitsubishi's new EV collaboration with Foxtron – which makes electronics including the Apple iPhone, Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Switch – is expected to be made available in Australia in the second half of next year. Foxconn has strong ambitions to become a big player in car manufacturing and earlier this year shaped up to take a stake in Nissan after the Japanese firm plunged into crisis cutting 9000 jobs and reducing production by 20 per cent. However Nissan instead flirted with a merger with fellow Japanese maker Honda before that proposal fell over amid disagreement over what form the coming together would take. Foxconn appears to have taken that rejection on the chin and moved on with Mitsubishi, with Australians set to be the first to enjoy the spoils of that partnership.
