Police say 15-year-old girl hurt in Prince George, B.C., shooting

Mounties in Prince George, B.C., say a 15-year-old girl was shot while in a recreational vehicle parked at a local homeless encampment. A statement from the RCMP says the teen was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the shooting happened around 1 a.m. at the Lower Patricia Boulevard encampment, locally known as Moccasin Flats. They say there's no indication of an increased risk to the general public. Police are still looking for a suspect and say the shooting is being handled by the serious crimes unit. The City of Prince George filed a claim in the B.C. Supreme Court in February seeking an order to close what remains of the Moccasin Flats encampment. It said enough new housing had been created to fulfill the requirements of a 2021 court order that allowed people to camp indefinitely in the area. 'For over three years, the Lower Patricia Boulevard encampment has been a subject of ongoing concern among residents. This includes concern for the safety of those living in the encampment and in surrounding areas,' director of administrative services Eric Depenau said in a statement in February.

Teen girl injured in shooting at Prince George, B.C., encampment

Mounties are investigating a shooting at an encampment in Prince George, B.C., that left a 15-year-old girl injured early Wednesday morning. Prince George RCMP said the incident unfolded on Patricia Boulevard, in the area known as Moccasin Flats, shortly after 1 a.m. The shooting happened in a 'recreational vehicle that is parked at that location,' the detachment said in a news release. Authorities have yet to identify or arrest a suspect. 'The investigation is still in its preliminary stages, but there is currently no indication there is any increased risk to the general public resulting from this incident,' Cpl. Jennifer Cooper said, in a statement. Cooper asked anyone with information related to the shooting – including surveillance video or dash-cam footage – to contact the Prince George RCMP's non-emergency line.

15-year-old hospitalized after shooting at Prince George homeless encampment

RCMP say they are investigating an overnight shooting at a Prince George, B.C., homeless encampment that sent a 15-year-old to hospital. The police force says it happened in a recreational vehicle that has been parked in the encampment, known as Moccasin Flats, at about 1 a.m. PT Wednesday morning. The victim, a 15-year-old girl, was taken to hospital with "serious but non-life-threatening injuries," Cpl. Jennifer Cooper said in a news release. Police say they don't believe there is any wider risk as a result of the shooting, and are seeking dashcam footage or witnesses to the event. Moccasin Flats has been designated as the sole location in Prince George where overnight camping is allowed as part of the city's efforts to curb people sleeping in other areas. The city is seeking a court injunction allowing it to remove the site after previously being prevented from doing so due to a lack of suitable shelter space elsewhere in the community.
