Wanna Buy a Car? The Boss at RM Sotheby's Auctions Has Some Advice
The specter of tariffs has new automobile manufacturers bracing for the worst, but for the collecting side of the business, recent auctions indicate quite the opposite of doom and gloom. RM Sotheby's will sell almost $1 billion in cars this year, about the same as 2024, says Rob Myers, the chairman and chief executive officer of the RM Group of Companies. He's off to a blistering start. On Feb. 1, at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, RM Sotheby's sold a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Streamliner for $53 days later, at the Retromobile auto show in Paris, it sold a 1965 Ferrari 250 LM for $36 million. On Feb. 27 it sold a 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II for $13.2 million, one of 86 cars that totaled $74.4 million during two days of sales at the company's ModaMiami automotive festival in Coral Gables, Florida. In April it will sell two Fiats and one Lancia once owned by the Italian industrialist and style icon Gianni Agnelli. Myers, a Canadian entrepreneur with a reputation for being as shrewd as he is mercurial, has earned his current position in the industry with his relentless drive at the company he founded as RM Auto Restoration in 1976. Sotheby's took a minority stake in 2015 and a majority in 2022; offices now span almost a dozen cities including Dubai, London and Los Angeles.

Trump Tariffs Aren't Scaring Car Collectors Away From Big Purchases
To watch Sholto Gilbertson working a crowd is to see a man seducing the world's wealthiest car collectors so completely that they will gladly raise a finger to bid another $50,000, or $100,000, to win whatever gilded machine he's offering on the auction block. On Feb. 27, 80 miles south of Mar-a-Lago — and seemingly a world away from the chaos of a new Trump administration — the chain-smoking Welshman was cajoling, imploring, flattering, scolding and charming his way to $35 million in sales on just nine lots during RM Sotheby's auction at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. It was one of two sales planned for the weekend's second annual ModaMiami celebration of all things automotive.

The Multi-Million-Dollar Squabble Behind ModaMiami
What started out as something of a tiff between auction giants RM Sotheby's and Hagerty's Broad Arrow seems to have worked itself out into a splendid couple of weeks in South Florida.1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Harry Yeaggy, Cincinnati, Ohio As the season comes into full swing in sunny south Florida, the car collecting cognoscenti now have two events in a row to attend: last week's ModaMiami held in Coral Gables at the fabulous and historic Biltmore Hotel, and The Amelia, now scheduled for this Saturday only (because of a thunderstorm scheduled for Sunday) at the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island just up the year, Moda's first, there was a bit of a scheduling snafu—which might have been intentional, might not have been, no one's saying—that saw both events on the same weekend. See, when Hagerty took over the Amelia in 2021, it hadn't yet acquired Broad Arrow Auctions. It did that the following year, and it held its first Broad Arrow Auction at the Amelia last year. RM had been hosting an auction at Amelia since RM Sotheby's held its first ModaMiami 'lifestyle event,' that happened to include an RM Sotheby's auction, the same weekend last year. Scandal! This year the two events were separated by a week, creating a lovely Florida destination week or two for a lot of car weekend was the second running of ModaMiami and, as we said, the 2025 Broad Arrow auction is going to be held Saturday, March it? Too much Inside Baseball? Anyway, the ModaMiami event was a blast, by all accounts, including the official account from organizers, whom you'd expect to say Duff, president of RM Sotheby's, described this year's ModaMiami as 'an event that's redefining what a concours can be.''After our successful debut (last year, which had eight Pebble Beach Best of Show winners in attendance), we're glad to return with an exceptional showcase that blends the best of automotive history with a modern, forward-thinking vibe.'This year's Moda featured 275 cars in the two-day concours held Saturday and Sunday under sunny skies, as well as a driving tour of Coral Gables and the best parts of South Florida on Friday. There was even a Moda After Dark party hosted by Rolls-Royce Saturday the lawn were featured marques like: 50 Years of the Countach, 20 Years of the Veyron, six Mille Miglia cars, and classes for hypercars, Cadillacs, and Stuttgart the auction? RM Sotheby's sold almost $75 million worth of cars over the course of ModaMiami, including a 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II that hammered for $13.2 million, a 1908 Mercedes 150 HP Rennwagen that sold for $8.25 million, and a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette SS XP-64 that went for $7.7 million. A million here a million there and soon you're talking about real everything goes up the coast for tomorrow's Amelia Island concours and auction. Hope to have photos of that for you, too.

The Reborn AC Cobra Is Indeed Coming to America
The reborn and modernized take on the iconic AC Cars Cobra model finally made its North American debut over the weekend, at the increasingly popular ModaMiami auto show. The Sunshine State is the perfect place for such a low-volume, high-impact sports car to make its first appearance, even if the team behind its construction are located in Florida's exact opposite: Sweden. AC Cars is Britain's oldest active automaker, having first opened its doors back in 1901. The brand, of course, is best known for its sports cars that came half a century later, particularly the Ace — the small, nimble roadster that served as the basis for Carroll Shelby's heart transplant experiment, ultimately creating the Shelby Cobra we know and cherish today. AC sold the V-8-swapped machines overseas in-period as the AC Cobra, which is the car you see re-imagined here today. The Cobra GT Roadster first arrived on your screens back in 2023, with the coupe variant following suit in 2024. These aren't simple kits based on the old dimensions, however. The wheelbase has been stretched 11 inches for improved stability, with four extra inches of total length overall. Additional track width helps bring added confidence and capability, while also creating a menacing shape. The cars don't quite have the drop-dead proportions of the original, but you won't mistake one for anything else. A 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 — with or without a supercharger — are your engine options, providing between 454 hp and 663 hp depending on the blower's presence or absence. Ford's six-speed manual and 10-speed automatic gearboxes are on offer to send that power to the rear wheels. And thanks in part to the carbon body that drapes over the new chassis, the AC Cobra GT Roadster and Coupe models are fairly light, sitting around 3200 pounds. Demand for AC Cars' latest projects have required the brand to step outside of their U.K. facility, teaming with T-Engineering for additional production capacity. The outfit is backed by Chinese automaker Dongfeng, but was formed by former Saab engineers in the early 2010s. David Conza, who purchased AC Cars back in 2022, is himself from Sweden. "AC Cars is well and truly back in America, and we're delighted to be with our existing clients and to meet so many new customers in Miami,' said Conza. 'The GT Roadster is a celebration of heritage and modern engineering and, based on the response so far, we know it's going to receive an unbelievable amount of attention over the coming weeks.' As awesome as the AC Cars models are, they do come at a cost. The Roadster models are slated to start around $240,000, whereas the Coupe is about $275,000. You're not likely to score a 'real' Cobra for that money, though, which begs the question: which version of a Cobra are you going for with that kind of scratch? Queen Elizabeth II's personal Land Rover fleet hits the road for US showcase
Britain's longest-serving monarch, the late Queen Elizabeth II, will be honoured by Land Rover for her love of the iconic British motorcar in an exclusive exhibition across the pond. Americans on the East Coast can catch a glimpse of a number of historic vehicles from the late Queen's personal fleet and that of the British royal household. After a successful 2024 tour across the US, one more stop has been marked on the map with royal fans able to check out a specialised collection of Elizabeth II's own cars at ModaMiami in Florida in March. The exhibition will showcase a specialised collection of five Series, Defender, and Range Rover models used by the late Queen during her 70-year reign. The display will feature vehicles used by the Royal family, either in an official capacity or as part of the household fleet. The Miami exhibition will boast five historic models of Land Rover, including two of the earliest Royal vehicles: the first Land Rover Series I State Review vehicle and a Land Rover Series I owned by the Royal family. The vehicles on display will include those from Land Rover Classic, the British Motor Museum, and a private collection. While the late Queen dedicated her life to service, her love for the motor car was sparked well before she ever donned a crown at age 19. In the Second World War, she became the first female member of the Royal family to volunteer for military duty, joining the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945, where she trained as a driver and mechanic. Her time in the military fuelled a love of driving and mechanics that lasted throughout her life. Chief Historian at Jaguar Land Rover North America Mike Bishop told Marie Claire in 2024 that he once got a glimpse of Elizabeth II behind the wheel. 'A few years ago, I attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show. Very early in the morning, a colleague and I met to see the pony displays, and we saw The Queen drive up in her 2009 Range Rover,' he said. He explained that, while she toured about the ground in her Land Rover, she 'just looked completely at home, like a normal woman in the countryside. The exclusive Miami display of five Royal-affiliated Land Rovers, including State Review vehicles and personal estate cars, honour the late Queen's dedication to service and her connection to the iconic British vehicle. The Vehicles of HM Queen Elizabeth II exhibition will run on March 1 and 2 at The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida.
