The Trump administration's imposed tariffs and threats of higher ones raise questions about how they'll affect consumers, specifically at the grocery store.
Overall, 15% of the United States' food supply is imported, according to reporting by USA TODAY, and some retailers whose products aren't subject to tariffs may still increase the prices of their products because of "industry price gap management" — the comparison of the price of their product versus a competitor — or because the packaging or ingredients used to make the U.S.-manufactured product may be imported.
Inflation is also an issue. An April University of Michigan consumer survey showed Americans expect prices to rise by 6.7% over the next year, which is the highest inflation expectation figure recorded since 1981, USA TODAY reported.
The Federal Reserve also forecast in March its preferred inflation measure would rise to 2.7% by the end of the year and last month, investment firm Vanguard predicted prices will rise nearly 4% in 2025.
Amid the uncertainty, we are trying to keep tabs on the prices of a range of everyday items and visited four Rochester-area grocery stores on Thursday, May 8 to comparison shop.
