Perak pig farm issues need another year to resolve, says MB

TAPAH: At least one more year is needed to resolve the issues concerning pig farms in Perak, according to Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad ( pic ). "I don't wish to comment more on it, as the matter has been answered by (state executive council member) A. Sivanesan," said the Perak Menteri Besar during a press conference after closing a parenting seminar at SM Sains Tapah on Wednesday (April 23). "Although it's not under his portfolio, he offered to resolve the matter," he added. Saarani acknowledged that resolving the issue is challenging, echoing the sentiments of former state agriculture committee chairman Razman Zakaria, who is now the state Opposition chief. In his winding-up speech during the state assembly sitting on Monday (April 21), Sivanesan stated that no new pig farms have been established in areas with a majority Muslim population. He added that there are only nine farms in Ayer Kuning, with eight having obtained planning approval for Modern Pig Farms (MPF), while another in Temoh is still in the application process. Regarding the use of water near Kampung Poh by Muslims, Saarani indicated that the Perak Islamic Religious Department (JAIPk) would need to test its suitability for ablution. "They are aware of the matter. They will need to check whether the content of the water is up to standard for ablution. I just do not want the matter to be politicised," he said. Saarani's comments came in response to claims by Perikatan leaders that a stream in Kampung Poh in Bidor has been polluted by effluent from a nearby pig farm. PAS vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad led a group, including media personnel, to the location on Wednesday (April 23). Idris also claimed that water from the stream was connected to several bodies of water in Ayer Kuning, making the water unsuitable for daily use.

Perak govt addresses Issue on number of pig farms raised in state assembly

IPOH: The issue of pig farming, especially in Ayer Kuning, was raised at the Perak State Assembly sitting. During his winding-up speech on Monday (April 21), Perak's human resources, health, Indian community affairs, and national integration committee chairman A. Sivanesan reiterated that the state government never approved any new pig farms in areas identified with a majority Muslim population. 'Most of the existing farms today are operations that have been in existence for decades, situated on privately owned land, and have been operating since before the gazettement of modern farming guidelines or policies,' he said. Sivanesan made this statement in response to a question from Manjoi assemblyman Mohd Hafez Sabri concerning pig farming activities in the Batang Padang, Muallim and Ayer Kuning constituencies. According to Sivanesan, 11 farms have received Planning Approval for their transition to Modern Pig Farms (MPF), while the remaining nine are still in the documentation process with the relevant councils. 'I would also like to refute a claim made by Manjoi stating that more than 30 pig farms are operating in the Batang Padang area. 'I seek clarification and confirmation on the location of the remaining 10 alleged illegal pig farms based on their field visit,' he said. Sivanesan said that this would enable the Veterinary Services Department to take enforcement action. 'I am also prepared to conduct on-site inspections myself if the Honourable Member's statement proves accurate. 'I welcome Manjoi to join me and the department for this purpose,' he added Sivanesan also clarified that there were no pig farms in the Muallim district as mentioned by Manjoi. He said at present, there were 11 farms in Bidor, and nine farms in Ayer Kuning. 'Eight of the farms in Ayer Kuning have already obtained planning approval from MPF, while one such farm in Temoh is still in the process of applying,' he added.
