According to NTR district police commissioner S V Rajasekhar Babu, police were conducting vehicle checks near Tummalapalem bus stop in Ibrahimpatnam when they noticed four individuals attempting to flee suspiciously. The police team swiftly nabbed them and conducted an inquiry, during which the suspects confessed to their involvement in a series of chain-snatching cases.
The arrested persons have been identified as Achi Giribabu (36), his brother Achi Mahesh (21) from Upputur village in Nellore, Galeti Venkata Ramana (38), and Mogili Sandhya (38) of Kondapalli in NTR district.
All four are currently residing in Kondapalli.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the prime accused, Achi Giribabu, previously worked as an agricultural labourer in his native village. Over time, he developed vices and lived a lavish lifestyle that exceeded his income. In pursuit of easy money, he resorted to chain snatching, targeting elderly women who were alone in remote or less crowded areas. Riding a motorcycle, he would snatch gold chains and flee the scene.
Giribabu earlier committed 12 chain-snatching offences in and around Nellore district, for which he was arrested and served jail time. After his release, he moved to NTR district to avoid detection and stayed with his second wife in Kondapalli. From there, he shifted to Donabanda and resumed chain-snatching activities.
Giribabu is accused of committing 15 snatchings alone. In addition, he carried out four offences with his brother Mahesh, three with his wife Venkata Ramana, and another three with his sister-in-law Mogili Sandhya, amounting to a total of 25 chain-snatching offences. The stolen ornaments were sold, and the money was used to fund the group's indulgent lifestyle. Police also seized two motorcycles that were used to commit the crimes from them.
