Mustapha open to friendly contests if seat talks fail

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Mohamad Fadli, FMT Text Size: SERDANG: Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud ( pic ) says he is open to 'friendly contests' between allies if the ongoing negotiations over seat allocations ahead of the Sabah state election fail. Mustapha said PKR is working to prevent clashes between parties in the government coalition, and aiming for fair seat distribution without overlaps. Advertisement 'We're still negotiating and doing our best to avoid contests. The goal is fair allocation without duplication,' he said. 'But if talks break down, friendly contests are an option. It's common in politics.' He did not specify which parties are involved in the negotiations. Mustapha, the deputy higher education minister, was speaking to reporters at an event at Universiti Putra Malaysia here today. Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak yesterday suggested that overlapping seats be handled through friendly contests, while maintaining unity and a shared objective. He said this approach was better than allowing internal tensions or encouraging sponsored independent candidates. Mustapha said PKR's main priority was political stability, and warned that clashes at the state level could strain relationships within the federal government. 'I urge everyone to stay open-minded. There's no benefit in fighting among ourselves and risking division. 'We want unity to continue. Avoiding unnecessary contests can help reduce friction among parties,' he said. - FMT * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PKR eyes at least 13 Sabah seats

Published on: Saturday, May 24, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 24, 2025 By: Mohamad Fadli, FMT Text Size: PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called for party members from all states to actively campaign in the upcoming Sabah state election. - FMT pic JOHOR BAHRU: PKR is aiming to contest at least 13 seats in the upcoming Sabah state election, according to its newly elected deputy president, Nurul Izzah Anwar. She expressed hope that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim would negotiate with Pakatan Harapan components and other allied parties contesting the state polls to help achieve the target. 'We need the president to negotiate for a minimum of 13 seats in Sabah,' she said during her winding-up speech at the PKR national congress held at the Persada International Convention Centre here today. Previously, PH and Barisan Nasional announced their intention to work together for the upcoming Sabah state election. The Sabah legislative assembly has a total of 73 seats. In the last state election in September 2020, PKR only managed to win two seats. The state assembly's term will expire on Nov 11. Elections must be held within 60 days of the assembly being dissolved. Advertisement Nurul Izzah also urged party members from all states to actively campaign in the Sabah state election. 'Don't forget, responsibilities have already been assigned. So I'm calling on our teams from Selangor, Johor and other states to support the campaign in Sabah. 'Make sure we show up in full force to help with the campaign. Most importantly, we must win as a united movement,' she said. In a policy speech earlier today, Anwar said the party's political bureau will hold a special meeting, likely on May 29, to discuss preparations for the Sabah state election. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
