Johor exco member rubbishes ‘sabotage' claims behind delay in water repair job

JOHOR BARU: A state executive councillor has denied claims that repair works for last week's water disruption were deliberately delayed to "sabotage" the PKR national congress. Johor works, transportation, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said there was no connection between the two incidents at all. "Macam tak ada kerja pula (It is as if we have nothing to do). 'This (the water issue) has nothing to do with the congress,' he told a press conference on the sidelines of the Johor state assembly here on Monday (May 26). Mohamad Fazli was responding to media questions about rumours that the repair works were delayed due to the congress. The PKR national congress, which includes the congresses for PKr Youth and Wanita PKR, were held last Friday and Saturday. On the water disruption, he said workshops would be held soon with water operator Ranhill SAJ to establish better standard operating procedures (SOPs) to handle such crises in the future. 'We will be having the workshop in a week or two to review the existing SOPs, including the communication process with account holders. 'One of the main issues raised was the water operator's failure to inform users early on about the faulty water pumps, which led them to continue using water from their reserve tanks as usual,' he said. Asked if action would be taken against the operator, Mohamad Fazli said only the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) had the authority to do so. 'Only SPAN can take action, as they are the regulatory body for water operators. 'They have received a report on the incident and are monitoring the situation. 'We will wait to see what they decide, whether to take action against the operator or review the existing SOPs,' he said. Earlier, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced that over 155,000 account holders affected by the disruption would receive a 15% rebate. Onn Hafiz also apologised on behalf of the state government to all Johoreans affected by the crisis. The water disruption, which began on Wednesday (May 21), lasted until Saturday (May 24), affecting account holders in Iskandar Puteri and Johor Baru.

Johor motorists can claim compensation for accidents caused by damaged roads, says exco

ISKANDAR PUTERI, May 24 — Motorists involved in accidents due to road damage in Johor are entitled to claim compensation, said Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. He said motorists can claim for damages to their vehicles, but must provide evidence showing the incident was caused by potholes or impaired roads. 'If an accident happens where there is vehicle damage due to road damage, motorists can make a claim to the concessionaire responsible for supervising the route,' he said during the question-and-answer session at the Johor state legislative assembly in Kota Iskandar today. Mohamad Fazli, who is also the Bukit Pasir assemblyman, was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Pandak Ahmad (BN-Kota Iskandar) on the quality of road paving and repairs in Johor. He said motorists must take photographs of the accident or vehicle damage, as well as the road defect. 'They must also include details of the location and time, a police report, and related receipts. 'An official letter can then be submitted to the relevant parties and road concessionaire involved, such as local government authorities, the Public Works Department (JKR), or the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA),' he said. Mohamad Fazli added that a motorist was recently awarded RM721,000 in compensation by the Johor Baru Sessions Court.

Johor water cut: 100,000 homes hit after Sungai Johor plant pump failure

JOHOR BARU, May 21 — Approximately 100,000 homes here are experiencing water supply disruptions following a breakdown in the main pump supplying water to the Sungai Johor water treatment plant. Johor Public Works, Transport, and Infrastructure Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh confirmed that operations at the Sungai Johor water treatment plant were halted late yesterday. He stated that the disruption has affected the supply of 318 million litres per day (MLD) to the involved areas. 'As an immediate measure, the reprocessing of existing water sources has been implemented and has successfully benefited about 11,000 affected consumer accounts. 'These accounts are expected to continue receiving water supply as usual by 7 am today,' Mohamad Fazli said in a statement. Since late yesterday, numerous residents have reported disruptions to the state water supply service provider and operator, Ranhill SAJ. Mohamad Fazli said that repair works on the faulty pump are currently underway and have achieved 15 per cent progress as of this statement. 'The repair work is expected to be fully completed by 7 am tomorrow. After that, the supply restoration process will be implemented in phases to ensure water pressure returns and is distributed progressively to the affected areas,' he explained. As additional support, Mohamad Fazli noted that 16 water tankers, with capacities of 9m³ and 40m³, have been dispatched to critical locations such as hospitals, health centres, and public hotspots. 'We deeply regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and cooperation of all users throughout this disruption period,' he stated. 'All efforts are being undertaken to accelerate the full restoration of water supply.'

Shoring up flood defences is high priority for Johor

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Eight flood mitigation works have been listed as high priority projects in Johor's efforts to tackle the natural disaster that occurs annually, says state exco member Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. The state works, transportation, infrastructure and communication committee chairman said that flood-related initiatives make up most of the 11 high-priority projects currently underway across Segamat, Kota Tinggi, Batu Pahat, Muar, Tangkak and Johor Baru. 'Among the listed projects is the upgrading of Sungai Muar in Segamat and the meeting point between Sungai Jementah and Sungai Labis, costing RM461mil,' he told the state assembly at Kota Iskandar yesterday. He detailed other significant projects, including phase three package two of the Sungai Muar flood mitigation project, which aims to increase the capacity of Sungai Labis, Sungai Jementah, and other tributaries, at a cost of RM70.95mil. Another project listed was the RM187.17mil Batu Pahat flood mitigation works and phase one package one of the Sungai Johor flood mitigation projects, valued at RM376mil, to build a retention pond and upgrade the river. Additionally, phase one package two, covering river and tributary upgrades in Kota Tinggi, is costing RM74.2mil. 'These projects in Segamat, Batu Pahat, and Kota Tinggi began last year and are scheduled for completion by 2029, though some are projected to finish ahead of schedule in 2027,' he added. Mohamad Fazli (BN-Bukit Pasir) was replying to questions from Datuk Jefridin Atan (BN-Kukup), Anuar Abd Manap (BN-Pemanis) and Marina Ibrahim (PH-Skudai) who asked for updates regarding flood mitigation works approved by the Federal Government and steps to mitigate floods in Johor, which were a common occurrence. Mohamad Fazli also informed the state assembly that other high priority projects include enforcing dam structure in Sembrong, Batu Pahat, at a cost of RM33mil, which is set for completion by July 2028. Three other projects from the list were in the pre-planning stage, with discussions ongoing about the design and technical studies involving locations in Muar, Tangkak, Batu Pahat and Johor Baru, he said. 'The state has also taken proactive measures by approving nine other flood mitigation projects worth RM15.53mil to tackle the issues in Tangkak, Pontian, Kulai, Segamat, Kota Tinggi, Kluang, Batu Pahat, Mersing and Johor Baru.'

E-ART system alignment update soon, says exco member

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The proposed final alignment for the Elevated Automated Rapid Transit (E-ART) system is expected to be known in several months' time, says a Johor executive councillor. State works, transportation, infrastructure and communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh ( pic ) said the E-ART would cover three main corridors – Skudai, Tebrau and Iskandar Puteri. 'These three corridors will be integrated at the main interchange station in Bukit Chagar to subsequently support the Rapid Transit Link (RTS),' he said in reply to Datuk Ramlee Bohani (BN-Kempas) who asked about the government's measures in addressing worsening traffic congestion in Johor Baru at the state Legislative Assembly here yesterday. He added that the E-ART initiative was subject to the outcome of the Request for Proposal (RFP) assessment. 'The Public Private Partnership Unit has initiated the RFP process for the implementation of the E-ART system, aimed at completing the integrated transport system in Greater Johor Baru. 'The proposed final alignment is expected to be known as early as August of this year, subject to the outcome of the RFP evaluation,' Mohamad Fazli said. He added that the implementation of the E-ART is expected to provide significant benefits in reducing traffic congestion, enhancing daily mobility and supporting the state's low-carbon agenda. He also said the state government has drawn up a traffic dispersal plan by setting up the Greater JB Traffic Dispersal Special Committee, a state-level special committee formed to identify congestion hotspots and draft traffic dispersal plans. 'So far, 77 congestion areas have been identified, and action has been taken at more than 20 locations. 'The committee has also proposed measures such as installing lane barriers, traffic info boards and enforcement during peak hours, which have been presented in the Cabinet Committee Meeting on Congestion and Safety. 'One of the hotspots where a dispersal plan has been implemented is the closure of Jalan Ledang heading to the Skudai Highway (exit from Taman Johor to Skudai), which has successfully reduced traffic congestion in the area,' he said. Mohamad Fazli added the government was reviewing the need to increase road capacity, including road widening, the construction of new bypasses and regular maintenance. He said this was to ensure that the traffic system can accommodate the growing number of vehicles and rapid development in the Johor Baru area. Meanwhile, state housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the government has committed to building 100,000 units of affordable houses by 2030, with 16,845 units already completed as of the first quarter of this year. 'The state government remains committed to achieving our target of 30,000 units by 2026, and the momentum will continue to reach 100,000 units by the end of this decade,' he said in reply to Muszaide Makmor (BN-Sedili), Mohd Yusla Ismail (BN-Senggarang) and Ng Kor Sim (PH-Jementah). He added that the plan includes efforts to expand projects under the Rumah Kasih Johor and Rumah Prihatin Johor programmes, which aim to support low-income groups.
