Kelantan wildlife captures two male elephants in Gua Musang

KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) captured two wild elephants in Kampung Pulai, Gua Musang yesterday. State Perhilitan director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the two elephants, both male, were captured following a report from villagers last Tuesday after the wild animals were seen roaming the area and damaging their crops. 'Acting on the complaint, seven members of the Kelantan Elephant Capture Unit (UTG) conducted surveillance and successfully captured the two elephants yesterday in the Kampung Pulai, Gua Musang orchard area. 'The capture of these wild elephants has somewhat brought relief to the residents, as well as prevented further losses due to the destruction of crops and property by pachyderm,' he said in a statement today. Mohamad Hafid said the operation to relocate and release the wild elephants to a more suitable and safe habitat will be carried out soon with the assistance of the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre, Lanchang in Pahang. 'To reduce human-wildlife conflicts in the area, we have provided advisory services to residents, especially farmers, to take mitigation measures. 'They include installing blue LED lights on the path identified as the entrance route for wild elephants to the plantation, constantly cleaning the plantation and erecting an Elephant Electric Fence System (SPEG) around the plantation area,' he said. He said the public is also advised to be more careful and vigilant, and if they encounter wildlife, not to take any action on their own that could pose a safety hazard to themselves.

Villagers in Jeli urged to report wildlife sightings after tiger tracks discovery

KOTA BHARU, May 18 — The Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) has advised Kampung Renyuk residents in Jeli to be vigilant and not to take action on their own if they chanced upon wildlife such as tigers in their surrounding areas. Kelantan Perhilitan director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said they received a report from villagers on May 14 claiming that they discovered tiger tracks in the forest near the village. 'As an immediate measure, Perhilitan dispatched a team to the location to investigate. We advise villagers not to panic, but to immediately report any wildlife sightings to the authorities,' he said when contacted today. He also reminded that any individual action to catch, disturb or approach wildlife is against the law and can be dangerous. 'We are seeing if there is a need to set traps or motion cameras but currently the focus is to confirm the animal species that left the tracks,' he said. Photos of the tracks, as big as an adult's hand, have gone viral and caused concern among villagers, some of whom are now afraid of venturing out into their farms. — Bernama

ANIMAL tracks, especially those left by predators, can alarm residents staying near such sightings. Images, and videos of such finds also often go viral on social media. A 29-second video clip is currently making the rounds shows tiger pug marks that captions and comments claim were found in rubber smallholdings and orchards owned by villages in Kampung Renyuk, Jeli. Is it true that villagers have come across such tiger tracks? VERDICT: TRUE Smallholders and farmers in the vicinity of Kampung Renyuk, Jeli, have been advised to be cautious following the discovery of tiger tracks in the area on Tuesday (May 13), reported Sinar Harian. Mukim Reka headman Abu Bakar Yazid told the Malay language daily that the tiger pug marks had been found in several rubber smallholdings and orchards in the area. "It is some distance from habitation. My advise to the farmers and smallholders is to go to their plots in groups and not alone to avoid any untoward incidents," he told Sinar Harian. He added that residents were nervous as most of them earned a living through farming and tapping rubber. Meanwhile, Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) Kelantan director Mohamad Hafid Rohani told Sinar Harian that the department had yet to receive an official report on the incident. However, he said that Kelantan Perhilitan would carry out an investigation into the sightings.

1.6km electric fence to keep out elephants

GUA MUSANG: About RM50,000 have been set aside by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to install a 1.6km-long community elephant electric fence system to curb wild animal intrusions at the Kesedar Sungai Terah Land Rehabilitation Scheme (RPT) here. Kelantan Perhilitan director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the fence system installation was the first community project of its kind in Kelantan. He said the installation of the fence would benefit more than 3,500 residents living in the surrounding villages of Kampung Subong, Kampung Sungai Terah, Kampung Awek and Kampung Kundur. According to Mohamad Hafid, the installation began on April 21 and involved both village residents and estate personnel, Bernama reported. Mohamad Hafid said seven wild elephants have been captured and relocated from the area from 2021 to 2024. Meanwhile, RPT Sungai Terah Federal Village Development and Security Committee chairman Wan Mohd Suhanis Wan Sulaiman said he hoped the electric fence would finally resolve the predicament faced by the local residents over the past four years. He said the animals had not only trespassed into plantations and farms, but also damaged the villagers' crops.
