Amanah eyes three seats in Sabah polls
United front: Mohamad (seated, centre) with state and division leaders at the launch of Sabah's Amanah election machinery. KOTA KINABALU: Tanjung Aru, Lumadan and Sulabayan are three seats currently being eyed by Amanah in the upcoming Sabah election, says party president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. 'However, these are only our wishes and aspirations but whether we will get these seats is not confirmed and final yet,' he said, adding that the aim is to minimise clashes with Pakatan Harapan's electoral partners in Sabah. Amanah, DAP and PKR make up the Pakatan coalition, which has announced plans to work together with Sabah Barisan Nasional in the regional polls. It is learnt that so far, Amanah has been allocated two of the 73 seats up for grabs in the election, but Mohamad declined to reveal them. As for the Tanjung Aru and Sulabayan seats, they are currently held by Parti Warisan's Datuk Junz Wong and Datuk Jaujan Sambakong respectively. Lumadan is represented by Parti Bersatu Sabah's (PBS) Datuk Ruslan Muharam. Asked about whether it would be reckless for Amanah to contest in the Warisan stronghold of Sulabayan, Mohamad said: 'This is just our intention. It is not final yet and it does not mean that Amanah will definitely get this seat.' He added that discussions on seat allocations are still ongoing among Pakatan parties and between Pakatan and its Sabah allies. Mohamad, who is also Agriculture and Food Security Minister, was speaking to reporters after launching the party's election machinery here yesterday. Earlier during his speech, he criticised those playing up religious and ethnic sentiments for political gain. One of the false narratives being stirred up is that the Chinese community is trying to take over the country, he noted. 'We must stop it because if we don't step in now, it would not do good for the country,' said Mohamad. 'Look at the population statistics. The Chinese population is becoming smaller while the Malay population is growing. 'So, how is it possible that the Chinese will to take over this country?'

Amanah eyeing 5 seats in Sabah polls
Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said two of the five seats have been finalised, while talks are in progress on the remaining three seats. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah Amanah is aiming to contest five seats in the upcoming state election, says party president Mohamad Sabu. Mohamad said talks are ongoing within Pakatan Harapan to finalise seat distribution among its component parties, following the conclusion of negotiations with Barisan Nasional. Of the five seats Amanah was eyeing, he said, two had been settled while talks are ongoing on the remaining three – Tanjung Aru, Lumadan and Sulabayan. He declined to name the two finalised seats, Berita Harian reported. Last month, Amanah election director Sany Hamzan said the party was planning to contest the Tanjung Aru, Karambunai, Lumadan, and Sulabayan seats. Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, today said Amanah remains committed to its partnership within Sabah PH, regardless of the outcome of the negotiations. 'Whether we get (to contest the seats requested) or not depends on the negotiations. But we promise that no matter the situation, our support remains with PH,' he told reporters after launching the party's machinery in Kota Kinabalu. Present were Sany, Amanah vice-president Adly Zahari, Sabah chapter chairman Lahirul Latigu and national women's wing chief Aiman Athirah Sabu. Asked about concerns that voters may favour local parties, Mohamad said Amanah would be fielding Sabahan candidates in the election. Previously, Lahirul said the state chapter is targeting to win at least one seat in the polls to ensure it has representation in the legislative assembly. Last month, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah leader Masiung Banah said the coalition is expected to contest at least 53 seats in the state election, while PH will vie for 20 under their electoral pact.

Amanah eyes five seats in Sabah, one confirmed under PH-BN negotiations
Mohamad Sabu (seated fourth from right) with Amanah's central and state leadership as well as members of the party at the launch here on Saturday. KOTA KINABALU (July 19): Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is looking to contest five state seats in Sabah for the upcoming state election, with one seat already confirmed under the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) seat negotiations, said party president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. Speaking to the media after launching Amanah's election machinery here today, Mohammad said the party remains fully committed to working with its PH partners despite mobilising its own grassroots campaign. 'First of all, Pakatan Harapan will move as one,' he stressed. 'But when it comes to activating our Amanah members, we have to deploy them ourselves. We will cooperate fully with all component parties,' he said. He said Amanah is targeting around five seats, including Sulabayan, Tanjung Aru, and Lumadan. Asked if contesting in Warisan's stronghold Sulabayan would be a risky move, Mohamad responded that the matter remains speculative for now. 'It's not certain we will get that seat. Whatever is decided later will be based on negotiations. For now, we can only mention it as a possibility,' he said. On whether the seat for Tanjung Aru has been confirmed for Amanah, he explained: 'Tanjung Aru has been given to PH but that does not mean Amanah is guaranteed the seat yet. PH includes Keadilan, Amanah, DAP and UPKO. The final decision will be made once party leaders sign off.' Addressing Sabah's growing preference for local parties, Mat Sabu said Amanah will ensure that all its candidates are Sabahan, and will ramp up grassroots efforts to build local trust and visibility. 'All our candidates will be local Sabahan faces. Once our election machinery is in place, we will launch more community-focused campaigns to show that we stand with the people of Sabah,' he said. Revamped fisheries law to pack more bite
KUALA LUMPUR: Major amendments to the Fisheries Act 1985 will impose increased penalties on various offences, including intrusion by foreign fishermen into Malaysian territorial waters, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. He added that the amendments aimed to increase the punishment for offenders, although the increased penalties will still be lower than those in the regulations in Indonesia and Thailand. Mohamad said that among the other amendments is control on certain types of nets and equipment that will destroy sea life. 'The amended Act will also protect live turtles from being sold and ensure that these animals do not go extinct,' he said after opening the National Fishermen's Association (Nekmat) annual general meeting here yesterday. He said the amendments will go through their first reading in the Dewan Rakyat next week. Earlier in his speech, Mohamad said that the subsidised diesel will continue to be supplied for fishermen registered with Nekmat.

Nekmat Posts Over RM11 Million Profit
KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- The National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT) recorded a profit of over RM11 million in 2024, driven by the successful implementation of various economic projects, including logistics and property development. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said among the contributing ventures was the opening of a NEKMAT petrol station in Mentakab, Pahang, which boosted the association's overall earnings. He added that NEKMAT has also played a vital role in managing subsidised diesel since 1987, with a monthly quota of 51 million litres distributed efficiently and effectively to fishermen. 'The government deeply appreciates NEKMAT's role in championing the welfare of fishermen. We will continue to work closely with the association and the entire fishing community to ensure their wellbeing is protected, in line with efforts to make the fisheries sector more sustainable,' he said when officiating NEKMAT's 40th Annual General Meeting here today. Meanwhile, NEKMAT chairman Abdul Hamid Bahari said the association's total transactions rose to RM869 million, with a net profit of RM11.38 million, boosting its share capital to RM30.26 million. 'This achievement reflects efficient management and the dedication of NEKMAT's workforce in implementing various economic projects for the benefit of its members and the wider fishing community,' he said. He added that major projects include the supply of subsidised diesel, marketing of fish and fisheries products, ice production, fisheries input supply, fishing operations, as well as logistics and property development. NEKMAT, he said, also plans to expand its business activities by building new petrol stations and ice plants, large-scale aquaculture ventures — particularly shrimp farming — and investing in the property sector. 'These efforts aim to transform NEKMAT into a modern, efficient and sustainable institution,' he said.
