Charges: St. Peter man's shoplifting arrest may have stopped a 'mass casualty event,' police say
Police say they may have thwarted a "mass casualty event" after officers arrested a St. Peter man for shoplifting at a Mankato retail store. Blue Earth County District Court documents say Mohamed Adan Mohamed, 24, has been charged with theft and making threats of violence, but details of the criminal complaint suggest he may have been planning a much more serious crime. Mohamed was arrested on Thursday, April 17, after he was found to have attempted to steal $21,500 worth of merchandise at a local business – including ammunition and body armor. A Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension special agent had been aware of Mohamed's recent activity, informing law enforcement "there were strong indicators that Mohamed was preparing to conduct some sort of attack (mass casualty event) in the next 24 hours." According to the criminal complaint, officers with the Mankato Department of Public Safety went to the business in question just before 3 p.m. on April 17 to investigate a suspicious person. Employees told police that a man, later identified as Mohamed, entered the store wearing a heavy winter jacket, green knit cap, a COVID mask and gloves. He had selected multiple items from the store, such as several magazines for a 9mm firearm, bear spray and body armor. Staff became suspicious after Mohamed had continued to select high-priced items and not checking the prices. According to the complaint, Mohamed told people on the sales floor that he "possessed an AR-style rifle that was calibrated to 9mm." An investigation revealed Mohamed had a blue Toyota Sienna parked on the side of the building with no rear license plate. Mohamed then allegedly left the business with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and was able to evade a citizen's arrest, getting into the Sienna, nearly running over a pedestrian, hopping a curb, and then driving through some mulch and onto Raintree Road. Employees found a list that Mohamed had been looking at while selecting items. The list reportedly says at the top, "Survival Gear List with Alternative" which included a sleeping bag, lights, eight magazines, knives, pepper spray, a "6-mag chest right," bows and arrows. Eight ammunition magazines were stolen from the store. One of the officers noted the items and recalled that he had been on a "call for service" in the last week when Mohamed had made several social media posts showing firearms and ammunition. One post reportedly showed himself pointing an apparent assault rifle at the camera, according to the charges. A hashtag used in the social media post said "#deathtoamerikkan&israeilliImperialism." Mohamed is in custody at the Blue Earth County Jail as of Thursday. He's set to make an initial, Rule 8 court appearance on May 1.

Minnesota shoplifting bust narrowly thwarts potential mass-shooting planned by suspect: ‘Deathtoamerikka'
A Minnesota shoplifting spree turned out to be something far more nefarious — with police alleging the deranged suspect was plotting to carry out a religiously-charged 'mass-casualty' shooting within hours. Mohamed Adan Mohamed, 24, was arrested on April 17 after he took off from a Mankato sporting goods store with more than $2,000 worth of ammunition magazines, body armor and bear spray, according to Blue Earth County charging documents. Store employees had noticed Mohamed prowling about the shop in an oversized jacket, medical mask and hat, and grabbing expensive items off the shelves without checking the prices. When they confronted him, he explained he was buying supplies for his AR-style rifle, according to the docs. Mohamed Adan Mohamed, 24, was arrested after allegedly plotting to carry out a mass shooting in Minnesota Embed LInk Police were called to the scene over reports of a suspicious person, but before they could arrive, Mohamed ran off with the goods as store security tried to stop him. He then leapt into a minivan without plates and sped away — jumping a curb and nearly hitting somebody in the process, the papers alleged. However, he left behind a shopping list at the scene, labelled 'Survival Gear List with Alternative' — which included a sleeping bag, gun magazines, pepper spray, knives, lighters and bow and arrows. One of the responding officers reviewing the bizarre list remembered a recent investigation into a local man who'd been posting videos of himself pointing guns at the camera. And the hashtags on those videos — allegedly posted by Mohamed — read 'deathtoamerikkan&israelliImperialism,' according to police. Investigators found that a Sienna matching the one seen at the scene was registered to Mohamed's address in nearby St. Peter, and determined 'there were strong indicators that Mohamed was preparing to conduct some sort of attack in the next twenty-four hours,' which they also called a possible 'mass casualty event.' Investigators searched Mohamed's home and found an assault rifle and two 3D-printed guns. He was then arrested at his home. A former classmate recalled that he had been struggling with mental health since high school. 'We grew in St. Peter together, and it's heartbreaking,' a neighbor named Dunia told CBS Minnesota. 'We just start seeing Mohamed just start talking to himself, not socializing with us, with the kids.' 'He has a very beautiful heart,' she added. 'He's a really good guy. It's just, he's not mentally, physically there right now at the moment.' Mohamed was charged with felony theft, and threats of violence. Both charges could carry sentences of up to five years in prison.

How an attempted citizen's arrest for shoplifting may have stopped America's next mass shooting
A 24-year-old Minnesota man's shoplifting arrest quickly became much more - as police say they uncovered his plans to commit a 'mass casualty event' within the next 24 hours. Mohamed Adan Mohamed faces charges of theft and threats of violence after allegedly stealing firearm magazines and posting threatening remarks on social media. The incident occurred on April 17, when Mankato Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a 'suspicious person' at a local business. Mohamed walked into the store wearing a heavy winter jacket, green stocking cap, a medical face mask and gloves while he was selecting several magazines for a 9mm firearm, bear spray, and body armor, the complaint states. The business became suspicious as he was 'selecting high-priced items and not checking the prices,' authorities wrote. Mohamed told people on the sales floor that he had an 'AR-style rifle that was calibrated to 9mm' before fleeing the store with about $2,150 worth of stolen goods. Investigators later found that he escaped in a blue Toyota Sienna on the side of the building with no rear license plate. Store security attempted a 'citizen's arrest' but to no avail — Mohamed was able to get into the car and drive off. In his escape, he nearly ran someone over, the complaint says. Left behind at the store was a list that Mohamed had been eyeing as he was picking out items. At the top of the list read 'Survival Gear List with Alternative' and it included sleeping bag, lighters, eight magazines, knives, pepper spray, a '6-mag chest right,' bows and arrows, investigators said. He stole eight magazines, the filing states. Mohamed had reportedly made several social media posts showing firearms and ammunition and one post showing himself pointing an apparent assault rifle at the camera, the filing says. The hashtag for the media post was #deathtoamerikkan&israelliImperialism. An officer recalled that he was already investigating the posts before the alleged shoplifting, the complaint says. A special agent in the state's criminal investigation bureau told law enforcement that 'there were strong indicators that Mohamed was preparing to conduct some sort of attack (Mass Casualty Event) in the next 24 hours,' the filing says. The St. Peter Police Department executed a Search Warrant at Mohamed's residence in St. Peter and found the firearm that was pictured in one of his posts. The 24-year-old was then arrested by St. Peter police and placed in the Blue Earth County Jail. Court filings also show that on April 18, the St. Peter Police Department filed a petition for an extreme risk protection order against him. An officer wrote that his social media activity 'speaks to a revolution and law enforcement is concerned he may commit a mass casualty event.' A judge granted the order Wednesday.

Shoplifter's arrest foils potential "mass casualty event" in Minnesota, charges say
Authorities say they believe a southern Minnesota man accused of theft and online threats may have been planning a "mass casualty event." Mohamed Adan Mohamed, 24, of St. Peter, faces felony charges of theft and threats of violence following his arrest after a shoplifting incident last week. Mohamed Adan Mohamed Blue Earth County According to the criminal complaint, Mankato Department of Public Safety officers were dispatched to a city business shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday to investigate a suspicious person. Employees told police that a man wearing a medical mask, gloves, a heavy winter jacket and a green stalking cap — later identified as Mohamed — entered the store and began selecting several 9mm firearm magazines, bear spray and body armor. Employees say they became suspicious when he began grabbing high-priced merchandise without looking at the price, the complaint said. Mohamed allegedly told people on the sales floor that he had an "AR style rifle that was calibrated to 9mm" before fleeing the store with over $2,150 worth of items. Security at the store attempted a "citizen's arrest" on Mohamed, but he got into a Toyota Sienna and fled, nearly running over a person in the process, according to the complaint. Mohamed left a list at the store, which he was looking at while taking items, that said "Survival Gear List with Alternative" at the top, the complaint said. The list included knives, bows and arrows, a sleeping bag, lighters, pepper spray, a "6-mag chest right" and eight magazines. Authorities say Mohamed stole eight magazines. Police spoke to Mohamed about recent social media posts An investigating officer, noting the listed items, recalled that he had been on a call for service within the week prior due to Mohamed "making several media posts showing firearms and ammunition and one post showing himself pointing an apparent assault rifle at the camera," the complaint said. The hashtag for the social media post was "#deathtoamerikkan&israelliImperialism." St. Peter police told WCCO that officers spoke with Mohamed and found no need for an arrest at that time. The officer investigating the shoplifting incident also learned that Mohamed had access to a 2001 Toyota Sienna that was registered to a person who lived with Mohamed in St. Peter. St. Peter police then executed a search warrant at the home and found a firearm that he had pointed at the camera in an online post. He was arrested without incident and booked into Blue Earth County Jail, police said. Following his arrest, an extreme risk protection order was granted against him, allowing police to seize his guns, which included an AR-style rifle and two 3D-printed handguns. At a virtual hearing related to that order, held Wednesday, the court ruled that he is prohibited from possessing guns for one year and is believed to be a risk to the public. Mohamed is due back in court on his criminal case in May. He remains in custody. This story will be updated.
