Governments demand answers after Israeli troops fire warning shots near EU delegation
Members of a diplomatic delegation from the European Union walk near the eastern entrance of Jenin camp during a visit to the city of Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, on May 21, 2025 [Mohammad Mansour/AFP] Listen to article More than a dozen countries have condemned Israel after its forces fired in the direction of a diplomatic convoy visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The convoy, attacked on May 21, included representatives from the European Union, United Kingdom, China, Russia and several other countries. According to the Israeli army, its troops fired 'warning shots' when the convoy allegedly strayed from an agreed route. No injuries were reported. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the shots were meant 'to distance them away'. The diplomatic delegation, comprising around 20 visibly marked vehicles, was on a visit coordinated with the Israeli military. Canada – Prime Minister Mark Carney 'The Israeli ambassador has been summoned to Global Affairs to see the minister and explain. We expect a full investigation and we expect an immediate explanation of what happened. It's totally unacceptable, it's some of many things that are totally unacceptable that's going on in the region.' United Kingdom – Parliamentary Under-Secretary Hamish Falconer 'Today's events in Jenin are unacceptable. I have spoken to our diplomats who were affected. Civilians must always be protected, and diplomats allowed to do their jobs. There must be a full investigation, and those responsible should be held accountable.' Ireland – Prime Minister Micheal Martin 'I am deeply shocked and horrified that the [Israeli forces] today opened fire on a group of diplomats visiting the town of Jenin. Thankfully, nobody was killed or injured. I unreservedly condemn this aggressive, intimidatory and violent act. This is not and must never be a normal way to behave.' Italy – Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani 'We ask the government of Israel to immediately clarify what happened. The threats against diplomats are unacceptable.' France – Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot 'A visit to Jenin, in which one of our diplomats was participating, was fired upon by Israeli soldiers. This is unacceptable. The Israeli ambassador will be summoned to explain. Full support to our agents on site and their remarkable work in trying conditions.' Germany – Federal Foreign Office 'The Federal Foreign Office strongly condemns this unprovoked fire. We can count ourselves lucky that nothing more serious occurred. The group was travelling in the West Bank in the course of its diplomatic work and in coordination with the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli army. The role of diplomats as independent observers on the ground is indispensable and in no way represents a threat to Israeli security interests. The Israeli government must immediately investigate the circumstances and respect the inviolability of diplomats.' Qatar – Ministry of Foreign Affairs 'The state of Qatar strongly condemns the Israeli occupation forces for opening fire on an international diplomatic delegation during its visit to the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, and considered [it] a violation of international laws, conventions, and diplomatic norms.' Turkiye – Ministry of Foreign Affairs 'We condemn in the strongest terms the opening of fire by Israeli soldiers on a group of diplomats, including an official from the Turkish Consulate General in Jerusalem, during their visit to the city of Jenin. This attack, which endangered the lives of diplomats, is yet another demonstration of Israel's systematic disregard for international law and human rights. The targeting of diplomats constitutes a grave threat not only to individual safety but also to the mutual respect and trust that form the foundation of inter-state relations.' Egypt – Ministry of Foreign Affairs 'The Arab Republic of Egypt emphasises its absolute rejection of this incident, which violates all diplomatic norms, and calls upon the Israeli side to provide the necessary clarifications regarding the circumstances of this incident.' Other condemnations poured from Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Jordan, Uruguay, Mexico, Finland , Denmark, and Belgium.

MSF says Israel is allowing 'inadequate' aid into Gaza – DW – 05/21/2025
05/21/2025 May 21, 2025 Germany condemns Israeli warning shots fired at EU diplomats The EU's top diplomat Kaja Kallas has condemned the 'unacceptable' incident Image: Mohammad Mansour/AFP Germany has "strongly condemned" Israel after its troops fired warning shots at a European diplomatic delegation in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday. The German Foreign Ministry has said it is demanding clarification from the Israeli government as to how a diplomatic delegation could be fired at. "The German Foreign Office strongly condemns this unprovoked attack. We can consider ourselves fortunate that nothing worse happened," a spokeswoman said according to a statement . A German diplomat and a driver from the German mission's Ramallah office were part of the group that was fired upon while they were traveling near the town of Jenin. "The group was in the West Bank as part of its diplomatic activities and in coordination with the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli army. The independent observer role of the diplomats on the ground is essential and in no way poses a threat to Israeli security interests," the German Foreign Ministry spokesperson said. "The Israeli government must immediately clarify the circumstances and respect the inviolability of diplomats," the statement continued, adding that German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul would also communicate this to his Israeli counterpart. The Israeli military has issued a statement explaining that troops had fired "warning shots" after the "delegation deviated from the approved route" and were headed towards "an area where they were not authorised to be." No injuries or damages were reported in the incident, the IDF statement said, adding that the IDF "regrets the inconvenience caused." The incident comes amid intensifying international pressure against Israel over the war in Gaza.

Report finds Israel's war on Gaza ‘worst ever conflict' for journalists
LONDON: A report released Tuesday by the Costs of War project at the Watson Institute for International Studies in the US has found that Israel's war on Gaza is the 'worst ever conflict' for journalists, with at least 208 Palestinian media workers killed since October 2023. Titled 'News Graveyards: How Dangers to War Reporters Endanger the World,' the study examines the toll of war on journalists, as well as broader trends in the US news industry that have weakened international coverage. It highlights how Gaza has seen an unprecedented death toll among journalists, far exceeding that of other conflicts in history. 'Attacks on journalists have exacerbated long term socio-economic shifts that have crippled the global news industry over decades and led to the de-prioritization of international news coverage and the closure of foreign news bureaus,' noted the report. 'Across the globe, the economics of the industry, the violence of war, and coordinated censorship campaigns threaten to turn an increasing number of conflict zones into news graveyards, with Gaza being the most extreme example.' The Brown University-based nonpartisan research project, which analyzes the human, financial, and political costs of post-9/11 wars, found that 'since Oct. 7, 2023, the war in Gaza has killed more journalists than the US Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan combined.' The report also revealed that in 2024, a media worker was killed or murdered every three days worldwide — an increase from 2023's rate of one every four days—attributed largely to the war in Gaza. 'Most reporters harmed or killed, as is the case in Gaza, are local journalists,' it added. BREAKING: More journalists have died in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023 than in both World Wars and other major wars, combined. Our new report outlines the costs of war to journalists – and the journalism we all rely on. [THREAD, 1/8] — The Costs of War Project (@CostsOfWar) April 1, 2025 Late in March, Palestinian journalists Mohammad Mansour, a correspondent for Palestine Today, and Hossam Shabat, a journalist for Al-Jazeera Mubasher, became the latest media workers to be killed in Gaza in Israeli attacks. The Israeli military admitted to killing Shabat, accusing him of being 'a terrorist' it had 'eliminated.' The report accuses Israel of mounting 'a full-spectrum effort to undermine the free flow of information,' citing the 'near-total destruction' of media infrastructure, internet blackouts, misinformation campaigns, and restrictions preventing local journalists from leaving Gaza while barring foreign reporters from entering. It also underscores the vital role local journalists play in conflict zones, describing them as bearing witness to 'the realities and horrors of wars. 'Journalists serve as the eyes and ears of the world, seeking out solid, verifiable information amid a vortex of violence and a welter of rumor, manipulation, misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda,' the report continued. The study also references Syria's civil war, where hundreds of journalists were killed by government forces and armed groups. The Syrian Network for Human Rights estimates that 700 journalists and media activists have been killed since the conflict began in 2011. The Watson Institute report warns that increasing threats against journalists not only endanger individuals but also undermine global news coverage and the 'worldwide information ecosystem.' 'The decreasing number of experienced foreign correspondents in conflict zones, due to long term shifts in the global news industry that have led to the de-prioritization of international news coverage and the closure of foreign news bureaus, has likewise crippled critical knowledge and helped facilitate the creation of news graveyards,' said the report.

Israel's war on Gaza 'worst ever conflict' for journalists: report
Israel's war on Gaza has been the "worst ever conflict" for journalists, with at least 208 Palestinian media workers killed since October 2023, according to a report by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. The report, titled News Graveyards: How Dangers to War Reporters Endanger the World, said the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip since October 2023 had "killed more journalists than the US Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War (including the conflicts in Cambodia and Laos), the wars in Yugoslavia in the 1990s and 2000s, and the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan, combined." "In 2023, a journalist or media worker was, on average, killed or murdered every four days. In 2024, it was once every three days," said the report. "Most reporters harmed or killed, as is the case in Gaza, are local journalists." Just last week, Mohammad Mansour, a correspondent for Palestine Today, and Hossam Shabat, a journalist for Al Jazeera Mubasher, were killed by Israel in two separate attacks.
