At a press conference following the meeting, Momani, who is also the government spokesperson, said that the Cabinet approved a package of investment incentives for the Tafileh Industrial Estate aimed at attracting businesses and creating job opportunities for local residents, according to a Prime Ministry statement. Momani said that the incentives include a full exemption from electricity tariffs for new investors whose projects are registered or established within one year of the decision. "Eligible investors will receive free electricity for three years from the start of operations," he added. "Land prices in the estate were slashed by 50 per cent, with the cost per square metre reduced to JD5, down from JD10 and previously as high as JD25, to encourage investment and reduce production costs." Momani also announced that the Cabinet tasked the Ministry of Justice with launching design and study tenders for the new Palace of Justice in Tafileh, with implementation scheduled to begin next year. As part of the government's environmental and tourism efforts, the Cabinet approved the establishment of the Aabel Environmental Park, which will include service facilities at a total cost of JD660,000. The Cabinet also approved the temporary leasing of the Al Tuwana Agricultural Station, located in Jurf Al-Darawish and spanning 224 dunums, to the Jordanian Engineers Association for five years, renewable upon approval. The lease is part of a public-private partnership project aimed at introducing modern agricultural technologies, boosting high-value crop production, and creating over 50 permanent jobs, in addition to seasonal employment opportunities. The project aligns with the goals of the Economic Modernisation Vision, particularly in empowering young agricultural professionals. To support the freight transport sector, the Council of Ministers endorsed a decision allowing the import of truck heads manufactured less than eight years before the clearance year, provided that an older registered vehicle is scrapped or re-exported. The move aims to reduce operational costs, enhance competitiveness, and ensure sustainability under the 'Quality of Life' pillar of the Economic Modernisation Vision, the statement said. Addressing long-standing contractor dues, the Cabinet approved procedures to settle municipal tender claims estimated at JD50 million, with payments scheduled for June. Contractors will be allowed to borrow up to JD50 million collectively from local banks, backed by government-issued guarantees. The total outstanding municipal debts to contractors currently stand at JD70 million. Additionally, the Cabinet instructed the Ministry of Public Works and Housing to implement the road leading to the Yarmouk Forest Eco-Lodge in Bani Kinanah District, Irbid Governorate, and allocate the necessary funding. The project aims to support local communities, generate job opportunities, and promote eco-tourism. As part of international cooperation, the Cabinet approved a memorandum of understanding with the Malaysian government to enhance cooperation in the health sector through knowledge exchange and mutual benefit. Momani opened the press conference by congratulating Jordanians on the 79th Independence Day, expressing national pride and unity on the occasion. AMMAN — Jordan celebrated the 78th anniversary of its independence with renewed confidence in its modernisation journey, marked by institutional reform, economic resilience, and a deepening national dialogue on sovereignty in an increasingly complex regional environment. Since its independence in 1946, the Hashemite Kingdom has charted a path of measured reform, balancing tradition with modernity and transformation. This year's Independence Day commemoration underscored the country's progress in political participation, youth empowerment, and economic self-reliance. Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani said, 'As we mark the 79th anniversary of the independence of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, we honour the sacrifices and determination of Jordanians who laid the foundation for a sovereign, modern state, one rooted in the values and principles of the Great Arab Revolt, unity, freedom, and a better life. Independence in 1946 marked a pivotal turning point, launching a new era of political and institutional modernisation under Hashemite leadership dedicated to building a strong, resilient, and cohesive Jordan. Momani, who is also the government spokesperson, added that Independence Day this year comes as Jordan moves forward with its comprehensive modernisation vision, political, economic, and administrative. This national path reflects the state's firm commitment to strengthening institutions, modernising the economy, and empowering Jordanians, especially the youth, to lead the next phase with confidence, competence, and a deep sense of national responsibility. Political reform took centre stage in 2024 with the first parliamentary elections conducted under the new political party's law. The legislation reserved 41 of the 138 Lower House seats for political parties, increased the women's quota to 18 seats, and opened candidacy to citizens aged 25 and above. These changes boosted participation among youth and women, with party membership data showing youth under 35 now make up over 40 per cent, and women accounting for more than 34 per cent of total memberships. Observers lauded the elections as a milestone for democratic development, while decentralisation efforts expanded through stronger governorate councils and enhanced local governance frameworks Omar Raddad, the strategic security expert said that the evolving media landscape requires urgent adaptation to preserve the integrity of Jordan's narrative at home and abroad. 'Without a coherent and authentic national narrative, others will step in to fill that void,' he said. Board Member of the Amman Chamber of Industry Musa Saket highlighted the integral link between sovereignty and economic independence said that 'Political independence cannot be deemed complete without economic independence, as the latter forms a vital foundation for national sovereignty. The less reliant a country is on aid and loans, the greater its ability to make decisions freely and independently. To achieve sustainable development, both public and private sectors must adopt comprehensive policies that stimulate local production, attract quality investment, and support high value-added industries. Youth empowerment, especially in innovation and entrepreneurship, is essential to drive the digital economy forward', he added. According to official data, The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) recorded a growth of 2.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023, exceeding the estimated rate of 2.5 per cent for the same quarter. The data showed that growth in the fourth quarter was driven by strong performance across key sectors of the economy, despite the challenges posed by regional instability and shifting geopolitical dynamics that affected various productive sectors. Jordan's national exports rose by 8.1 per cent by the end of February 2025, reaching JD1.309 billion compared with JD1.211 billion during the same period last year, according to the monthly report issued by the Department of Statistics. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows to the Kingdom increased during the third quarter of 2024, reaching $457.8 million, a 3.7 per cent rise compared with the same period in 2023, according to Central Bank of Jordan (CBJTourism revenue surged to $2.4 billion in the first third of 2025, marking a 15.3 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, according to preliminary data from the Central Bank of Jordan. The Economic Modernisation Vision (2022–2033) continues to guide development strategy, targeting job creation and diversification through innovation-led sectors including ICT, logistics, and renewable energy. Across the Kingdom, Independence Day was marked by patriotic ceremonies, military parades, and cultural events. Organised by the Young Women's Foundation for Political Empowerment, the session featured Minister of Government Communication and official spokesperson Mohammad Momani, alongside representatives from civil society organisations and media institutions. Momani described the growing spread of misinformation and hate speech as a 'global challenge' that requires a comprehensive national response. While reaffirming the government's commitment to freedom of expression as a pillar of national security, he stressed the need for a responsible and balanced exercise of this right. 'Constructive and objective criticism is essential for improving public policy,' he said. 'However, unsubstantiated scepticism and misinformation are unacceptable.' The minister noted that in the digital age, where information circulates rapidly and widely, governments must remain open to critique but vigilant against deliberate disinformation. He warned of organised campaigns aimed at eroding public trust and undermining state institutions. To confront these challenges, Momani called for legislative measures to criminalise the intentional spread of rumours and hate speech—while carefully safeguarding freedom of expression and protecting against discrimination based on origin or national affiliation. He also emphasised the importance of strengthening political and media literacy among youth to help them critically evaluate information. In this context, he highlighted the role of social media influencers and the use of cybersecurity tools in disseminating accurate information and combating online disinformation. 'Spreading rumours is often a calculated attempt to distort political discourse and damage public confidence in state institutions,' Momani said, underscoring the need for collaboration between traditional and digital media. He reaffirmed that mainstream media remains the most reliable source of verified information. The minister also called for enhanced cooperation between the government and civil society to promote responsible media practices, combat hate speech, and ensure the credibility of public communication. Participants in the session echoed the need to rebuild trust between citizens and official media. They urged journalists to prioritise accuracy over speed and encouraged public figures and analysts to support the national narrative. The discussion further underscored the importance of empowering youth to verify information, expanding media literacy programmes in local communities, and working with English-language journalists to effectively communicate national perspectives abroad. Recommendations included integrating media education into school curricula, creating rapid-response mechanisms to address misinformation, and supporting youth-led initiatives and positive influencers to foster public trust in official media.
