MPs propose Tamkeen funding to back Bahraini athletes' wages
Tamkeen may be asked to cover the wages of Bahraini athletes under a proposal set for parliamentary debate on Tuesday. The plan seeks financial backing for players, coaches, and club staff throughout their contracts. Five MPs, led by Mohammed Al Olaiwi, are calling on the Labour Fund to create a dedicated programme supporting Bahrainis employed in local sports clubs. The aim is to ease financial pressure on clubs, encourage youth participation in sports careers, and address salary payment delays. 'The proposal would ensure Tamkeen supports wages for players, coaches, and administrative staff for the full duration of their contracts,' Al Olaiwi said. The Services Committee unanimously backed the proposal, highlighting its potential to increase job opportunities and bring stability to a sector plagued by irregular pay. In response, Tamkeen chief executive Maha Mofeez acknowledged the proposal's intentions but expressed concerns. She stated that Tamkeen's primary role is to encourage private sector employment and productivity, rather than fully cover wages across uncertain contract durations. Mofeez noted that the fund already supports Bahrainis in sports under existing programmes, which provide partial salary coverage for up to five years, contingent on Social Insurance Organisation registration. 'The proposed plan could lead to roles entirely dependent on Tamkeen's support, raising concerns about the sector's stability,' she wrote. Despite these reservations, Al Olaiwi defended the initiative as a means to create longterm job security and stimulate growth in the sports sector. 'It offers security to those working in clubs and opens opportunities for others to pursue sports careers,' he said.

Bahrain: Proposal to conduct labour market study every four years approved
Bahrain - A labour market study could be conducted every four years to assess the demand for various professions in both the public and private sectors. The proposal, approved unanimously during the weekly Parliament session yesterday, was presented by five MPs led by Lulwa Al Romaihi. It aims to address unemployment and guide graduates towards in-demand specialisations. The MPs believe that a regular workforce study would enable policymakers to identify trends, anticipate labour demands, and ensure that educational institutions align their programmes with the actual needs of the market. A proposal to ease the financial burden on the families of deceased Bahraini citizens by waiving outstanding electricity, water and municipality fees upon the subscriber's death has also been unanimously approved. The proposal was submitted by five MPs led by services committee vice-chairman MP Mohammed Al Olaiwi. They said the current system, which requires heirs to settle unpaid utility and municipal bills from the deceased's estate, places an additional financial strain on families already dealing with the loss. They also claimed that the waiver of dues would prevent disputes among heirs settling the deceased's liabilities. Eight other proposals were unanimously approved and referred to the Cabinet for review: l Revamping Al Mazara'a Avenue from Jasra to Demistan. l Altering construction rules and regulations for villas in the Sanad Saraya Area to allow homeowners to expand their small buildings which doesn't exceed 210sqm. l Building two jetties for fishermen – one, between the Isa Bin Salman and Hamad Bin Isa Bridges and the second, between the fourth bridge connecting Manama with Muharraq. l Rescheduling housing loans on pensioners to ensure instalments don't exceed 10 per cent of their monthly income, instead of the current 25pc. l Establishing an elderly centre for Southern Governorate residents in Wadi Al Sail. l Easing eligibility conditions for anti-inflation allowance to include Bahrainis with commercial registrations (CRs), who don't have a fixed or proper source of income. l Adopting a more transparent mechanism for Sijilat (CR database) to allow people to access information about businesses. l Keeping services' ministries open over two shifts – morning and evening. Turning family homes into rentals? Landlords may pay the price
Landlords who lease family homes for other purposes could face fines under a proposed law set for discussion in Parliament on Tuesday. If a landlord knowingly allows such misuse, they would face a fine. If unaware, the responsibility falls on the tenant. Municipal inspectors will enforce the law, with fines set by the local authority—subject to approval by the minister in charge of municipal affairs—and capped at the property's annual rent. The minister will also establish rules for leasing homes for non-family use. Officials say some areas have been overrun by renters, altering the character of neighbourhoods despite existing regulations. The Public Utilities and Environment Committee has backed the proposal after reviewing a revised version that amends the Real Estate Leasing Law. The legislation was put forward by MPs Mohammed Al Olaiwi, Dr Hisham Al Ashiri, Abdulwahid Qarata, Jaleela Alawi, and Hassan BuKhammas. The Ministry of Justice has raised concerns about enforcement, noting that multiple authorities would need to coordinate efforts to track violations. The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs, which oversees rental registrations, has stated that it has no role in policing breaches. The Capital Municipal Council supports the proposal, while the Muharraq Municipal Council has also backed it, citing the growing issue of housing workers in family districts—especially in older neighbourhoods where companies have been caught using homes to accommodate drivers. The council is calling for fines to be paired with eviction orders. However, the Northern Municipal Council opposes the plan. The Southern Municipal Council is in favour, arguing that penalties would help curb violations. The Real Estate Regulatory Authority has noted that the proposal aligns with broader rental laws, including property classifications and lease oversight. The Survey and Land Registration Bureau has not raised objections, aside from minor wording adjustments.

MPs to vote on donor-funded event hall
A plan to build an event hall in Muharraq Grand Park — fully funded by a private donor — will go to a vote in Parliament today. If approved, it would give Third Constituency residents a free venue for weddings and community gatherings, sparing them the steep cost of hiring private halls. MP Mohammed Al Olaiwi, backing the proposal, said the area's growing population had been left without a proper venue. 'People are forced to rent private halls at high prices. This isn't just an extra cost — it's a burden on families who already have enough expenses,' MP Al Olaiwi said. The proposed site is west of the park's car park, with a donor willing to cover the full construction bill. 'This project won't cost the government a single dinar,' MPs said in a statement. 'It's a practical solution to a real problem, and it would bring people together.'

MPs back urgent aid for displaced Gaza families
Parliament has approved an urgent plan to send emergency aid and supplies to displaced families returning to their shattered homes in Gaza. The decision, made during yesterday's session, comes as MPs push for a swift response to the worsening conditions on the ground. The proposal has now been passed to the government. Request Ahmed Qarata, Mohammed Al Olaiwi, Dr Mahdi Al Shuwaikh, Abdulwahid Qarata, and Lulwa Al Rumaihi put forward the request, arguing that Bahrain has long stood by the Palestinian cause and should continue to do so. They pointed to the country's record of backing Arab and humanitarian efforts, with the memorandum stating that 'His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has repeatedly reaffirmed Bahrain's support for the Palestinian people, as their cause remains the foremost concern of the Arab world.' MPs warned that displaced Gazans were returning to devastation, stripped of the means to rebuild their lives. Suffering 'Given the dire living conditions, it has become essential to provide urgent aid and humanitarian supplies to help ease their suffering,' said Second Deputy Speaker Ahmed Qarata. The move is also seen as a reaffirmation of Bahrain's long-standing backing of the Palestinian people, with supporters arguing that it would send a clear message of solidarity at a time when support is most needed.
