26 undocumented migrants nabbed in factory raids
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 26 undocumented migrants were detained by the Immigration Department during the Op Mahir operation around Jalan Kuchai Lama and Jalan Chan Sow Lin earlier today. Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said the arrests followed inspections on 352 individuals, comprising 283 men and 69 women, at three factories. "All those detained were foreigners from Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Myanmar and Nigeria, aged between 28 and 50. They are believed to be working illegally in the country. "Two local men, believed to be their employers, were also arrested under Section 56(1)(d) of the Immigration Act 1959/63," he said after the operation. The raids were carried out at two scrap processing factories and a printing facility. Some of the foreign workers attempted to flee but were unsuccessful. Mohammed Saupee said four Immigration Form 29s were also issued during the operation. The form serves as a summons for individuals to assist in investigations as witnesses, particularly in cases involving immigration offences. Those arrested were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Depot for documentation and further action. "The case is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963," he said.
