Five cattle smugglers arrested
Lucknow: A joint team from
Gosaiganj police
station and surveillance cell arrested five
cattle smugglers
, including leader of the gang,
Mohammed Shoaib
alias Genda, in a police encounter in early hours of Saturday.
Shoaib opened fire at the police team and in a retaliatory shot his leg was injured.
Other arrested included gang members Mohammed Jabir, Faizan Ayub, Munir Alam and Firasat Sadiq.
DCP South, Nipun Agarwal said a truck was found with mismatched number plates while the accused fled in a sedan after the truck broke down. The gang, smuggling cattle from UP and Bihar districts, was tracked through CCTV footage and electronic evidence. A police team intercepted them Beli Underpass Jail Road on Friday night.
Shoaib was arrested. Faizan and Jabir fled but were later nabbed. Munir and Firasat, who arrived to negotiate release of the truck, were also arrested.
A reward of Rs 50,000 was announced for the police team. The accused face charges under Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act and the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act. "The gang members said they smuggled cattle from districts like Meerut, Rampur, Hardoi and Muzaffarnagar in UP and selling them in Sasaram, Bihar, where they were intended for slaughter," said Agarwal.
